From the Springfield Civic Center in Springfield, MA
Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Stan Lane
This week in action are Jeff Jarrett, Thurman Plugg, Earthquake, and the Headshrinkers. Plus, a special feature on Yokozuna and more!
Jeff Jarrett vs. Mike Maraldo
Jarrett cheap shots Maraldo near the ropes as Gorilla talks about the rumors of Jarrett singing at the Fan Fest. Jarrett connects with a dropkick then calls out Bret Hart before using a slingshot suplex. The announcers now talk about the celebrities appearing at WrestleMania as Jarrett misses an elbow drop but ducks a punch then uses a jumping DDT for the win (2:01).
Thoughts: They put over Jarrett’s character and talked a lot about the Fan Fest, which like “Superstars” also became a running theme of the show.
WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. This is about Owen Hart scouting all of Bret’s matches then we see last week when Bret defeated Adam Bomb on “Superstars.” We then see Owen from this week’s “Superstars” where he appeared on that “despicable little toad’s” Funeral Parlor and hear his entire promo. Lord Alfred being Owen’s hype man of sorts has been bizarre but its also not effective.
Earthquake vs. Iron Mike Sharpe
Sharpe grabs a side headlock but Earthquake places him on the top rope. Earthquake doesn’t fall for Sharpe’s tactics and hits him with a corner splash then follows with a leg drop. Earthquake knocks Sharpe through the ropes then we hear from Harvey Whippleman with Adam Bomb in an insert promo where he tells Earthquake to seek a bomb shelter because “nuclear devastation” is coming at WrestleMania. Earthquake rolls Sharpe inside for a powerslam then hits the sit-down splash for the win (2:29).
Thoughts: Woof, that insert promo was the shits and there is zero heat for the Earthquake vs. Bomb match.
A WrestleMania Moment this week is of Ray Charles singing “America, The Beautiful” at WrestleMania 2.
The Headshrinkers w/ Afa vs. Scott Taylor & Tony Roy
Nikolai Volkoff is shown once again in the crowd as he yells at Afa & The Headshrinkers while Lane makes fun of his suit. The Headshrinkers destroy their opponent as Gorilla says its just a matter of time until they become champions. The Headshrinkers beat the crap out of Taylor then do the same to Roy until Fatu puts him away with a top rope splash (2:31).
Thoughts: It seems like its been forever that the Headshrinkers have been touted as future champions but they still remain without any feud or storyline.
WrestleMania X Report with Todd Pettengill. Still no opponent named for Alundra Blayze.
Smoking Gunns vs. Mark Thomas & Black Phantom
Billy and the Phantom mix it up to start as the announcers talk about the World Heavyweight Title being defended twice at WrestleMania. Thomas tags in but Billy runs him over then Bart tags in and hits a delayed vertical suplex. The announcers plug the Fan Fest now as the Gunns remain in control then the Gunns put Phantom away with the powerbomb/flying elbow drop combo that Lane calls “The Revolver” (2:35).
Thoughts: The announcers periodically talked about The Gunns but mostly focused on everything else going on at WrestleMania.
Gorilla narrates a video package on Yokozuna’s title reign.
Thurman “Sparky” Plugg vs. Bert Centeno
The announcers plug the WrestleMania Hotline as Plugg grabs a side headlock. Plugg slams Centeno then runs him over as the announcers now talk about the ten-man tag at WrestleMania. Plugg stays in control as the announcers talk about other title matches on the show then Plugg goes up top for the flying knee drop, now called the Pit Stop Plunge as Lane made sure to say that twice (2:14).
Thoughts: They finally talked about the ten-man tag on commentary as Plugg’s finisher is no longer called the Overhead Cam. They made that point clear in how much they stressed the Pit Stop Plunge name.
The announcers plug the personality profile piece on Plugg inside of the newest edition of “WWF Magazine.”
Bucky & Vinny, the cab drivers, are at a diner talking about Men on a Mission. They only get Mabel’s name correct. This made me yearn for Sy Sperling segments.
Next week in action are Owen Hart, The Quebecers, Razor Ramon, and Randy Savage. Plus, an interview with Bret Hart & Lex Luger.
Final Thoughts: With the sweeps month wrapping up and Challenge rapidly being dropped in syndication throughout the country there was nothing exclusive that happened on this show. And this trend would continue into the following year when the show would become cancelled. Anyway, WrestleMania X is now just two weeks away so expect nothing but last minute PPV hype across all programming.
