PPV is Dead

Scott,

We may want to file this along with Mayweather/Pacquiao whatever the McGregor and Rousey UFC PPV numbers end up being in the "PPV is Dead" argument.

http://www.avclub.com/article/grateful-dead-farewell-concerts-set-pay-view-recor-222882

For those not aware, McGregor talked himself into ONE MILLION buys for that last UFC. Easiest payday of Robbie Lawlor’s life.

And yeah, the whole PPV is dead argument is mostly WWE justifying their own destruction of the PPV industry.

CM Punk in the UFC: Sure, Why Not? (a plea for a plug)

Scott,

This is my request for a plug for an article I wrote on CM Punk and UFC. I assert that this probably isn't the worst thing for all parties involved, and that MMA purists should not get their collective panties in a bunch. I also believe that Punk may have a better chance of winning a fight or two then we are giving him credit for.

CM Punk in the UFC: Sure, Why Not?

If you plug this, thanks!

I think it's great that Punk is living out his dream, but he's not winning any fights. I'd be surprised if he makes it through a full training camp, in fact.  But he's got the money to do it, so why not?
More importantly, Jones-Cormier tonight.  OH YEAH.

Brock Back To UFC?

http://insidefights.com/2012/05/27/brock-lesnar-back-to-the-ufc-having-meeting-with-dana-white-after-ufc-146-was-in-crowd/

I think his appearance on the show last night was just a WWE publicity thing so that the next time they bring him out he can be all "Oh, I'm an OUTSIDER and I want to go back to UFC and not wrestle in your wrestling show" and HHH can be all "Grrrr, you signed this exclusive contract to wrestle in our wrestling show and I'm the COO and wrestled Undertaker two years in a row, and I'm very angry because now I'm corporate and can't wear a leather vest over a jean jacket in public anymore, grrrr."  And then they'll fight at Summerslam or something.  I will say that Brock would be, what's the word I'm looking for here, oh yeah, fucking retarded to even think of getting back into this heavyweight division, because Junior would knock him out even faster than Overeem did.  However, if they did Brock v. Fedor or some other tomato can opponent and put it on PPV or even on FOX to draw a monster rating, it might be an interesting experiment.

So Much For Overeem

http://www.f4wonline.com/more/more-top-stories/118-daily-updates/25024-overeem-tests-positive-for-testosterone-as-in-lots-of-it

Whoops, there goes another UFC main event.  Who would have ever suspected that someone would go from cruiserweight to super heavyweight and be involved in illicit activities to get there?  I am SHOCKED and APPALLED.  Drug testing the guys at the press conference was devious and brilliant.

Wonder if Brock will campaign to get his loss to Overeem overturned now.

Ronda Rousey: Real.

Holy shit, Ronda Rousey, supposed freakshow women’s MMA act, is FOR REAL.  And that was an awesome one-round fight against Tate, probably more dramatic than all but a few of the great UFC fights this year so far.  Looked like Tate’s arm was broken after the second armbar, but they were out there doing highly technical reversals and just generally bringing it.  Congrats, Rowdy Ronda.

UFC 144

That was a HELL of a show tonight.  Thank god they finally found someone with charisma to get the title off of Frankie Edgar, because Frankie is a great fighter but he’s death for PPV.  I anxiously await Clay Guida stringing together another couple of wins so he can finally get a title shot and we can get the rematch against Henderson.  Bader dominated Rampage and looked more like himself again instead of the guy losing fluke fights to Tito Ortiz.  Sexyama continues to impress even when losing and will probably save his job by that virtue, but man he looked skinny as fuck at welterweight.  I still don’t get the big deal with Jake Shields and this wasn’t a particularly dominating victory or anything, but they desperately need contenders until GSP gets back.  And yeah, Mark Hunt knocked Cheick Kongo THE FUCK OUT, something which has been really tough to do even with Kongo’s somewhat hot-and-cold streaks.  I haven’t watched the prelims yet on the DVR, but even without them this is a stone cold thumbs up show and well worth checking out, and it’s got a crazy good main event.  GET ALL THIS.

Fighting Dirty

Hey Scott.
Just watched the UFC thing on Fox, and the same thought came to me again as I’ve had when I’ve watched MMA – why doesn’t someone start fighting dirty? I mean within the rules, but being a complete dick in the ring and do the kind of thing that would definitely be frowned upon and booed. I’m thinking stamping on the opponent’s foot in a clinch (which would be technically legal), or battering ram with the head or repeated leg sweeps. Basically acting like a full-on heel and doing anything to win. I realise that it would be hugely unpopular and would bring MMA closer to wrestling in a lot of viewer’s eyes, but it seems to me that someone could be really exploiting some gaps. Thoughts?

Guys train for YEARS to win at MMA using whatever little weaknesses and exploitations they can get, and if someone suddenly thought that any of that would be effective, you’d see it.  Guys have definitely stomped on feet in the clinch before, back in the early days, and it didn’t make much difference to the fight.  You’re expending a lot of energy to not a lot of effect.  Plus Dana White would probably fire whatever guy was dumb enough to fight that way anyway.

CM Punk’s Sing-A-Long Blog

Hi Scott!  I’m a fan & avid reader of your blog.  I’m not sure if you’ve seen this, but it’s a montage of clips of CM Punk from the WWE’s MITB storyline, with music from “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”.  Whoever edited this, did an AMAZING job with this! http://youtu.be/5Rz38IwXKG0
This is insanely awesome!  That said, I’ve never seen “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”.  I’m gonna fix that now.  🙂 Thanks so much & have an awesome new year!

Never seen Dr. Horrible either, but it’s on Netflix Canada and I do love NPH, so perhaps I shall check it out.  By the way, apparently the US Netflix streams all of sorts of WWE DVD releases, but up here we get UFC PPVs with George St. Pierre.  So good for us.
