Summerslam Countdown 2021: The SmarK Rant for WWF Summerslam 99

The SmarK Rant for WWF Summerslam 99 – 08.22.99

Here’s another one DESPERATELY in need of a redo from the original version back in 99. This was also one of the first DVDs released by the WWF, although I bought it and never watched it again. Oddly enough, it also marks one of the shows where I bought it twice on DVD, because I got the original DVD release and then also bought the various Summerslam Anthology sets and ended up with 99 duplicated as a result. And now I’m just watching it on the Network anyway.

Live from Minneapolis, MN, drawing 17370 and a 1.61 buyrate, about the same as 98 in fact. Clearly the product was still red-hot even as Vince Russo was self-destructing.

Your hosts are Jim Ross & Jerry Lawler

The SmarK Rant for WWF Summerslam 97: Hart & Soul – 08.03.97

(Turns out I had just redone 97 back in 2019, so I’m gonna skip the repost of 96 for the moment and buy some time with 97 and 98.  Mostly because this series is going to put my kid through college at this rate and I’d like to milk it for as much as I can before my vacation is over this weekend.)

Live from East Rutherford, NJ, drawing 20,213 and a gigantic $500,000 gate, but with a cruddy 230,000 buys, or a 0.8.

Your hosts are Vince McMahon, Jim Ross & Jerry Lawler.

The SmarK Rant for WWF Summerslam 95 – 08.27.95

WELL YOU KNOW SOMETHING, MEAN DOK!  Diesel-Mania (trademark 1995, Big Kev LLC, all rights reserved) has been running fairly wild over the WWF for the past year, as long as the ol’ quad holds out, you know what I mean?  We hear Dubya-see-dubya has a new show on the other channel, but all the little Kliqsters know that the real action is right here with Big Daddy Cool!  Yeah, ratings are down and no one is coming to the shows, but I’ve got an iron clad deal so it don’t matter, jack!  Big Daddy Cool is WWF champion for the long run.  As long as Vince continues letting me and my friends do exactly what we want.  So kids, remember the three demandments of Diesel-Mania (trademark 1995, Big Kev LLC, all rights reserved) before you watch tonight’s show:

  1. Renegotiate your contract frequently and make sure to get it notarized.
  2. Don’t do drugs! Reminds me of a funny story that Razor told me backstage while we were lighting up before a show in Dusseldorf, after we stopped in Amsterdam and got some REAL good shit.  Man, we got that little midget and his hot girlfriend so many times on that trip…
  3. Um, I forget the third one.

So until next time, Kliqsters…eh, whatcha gonna do?

The SmarK Anthology Rant for WWF Summerslam 1993

– As promised, I’m finally getting around to this one, to go along with the 1993 RAW rants.  Once again this is the version from the Summerslam Anthology, which is the PPV version without all the annoying licensed entrance music and references to the WWF.

– Live from Auburn Hills, MI.

– Your hosts are Vince & Bobby.

The SmarK Rant for WWF Summerslam 92 – 08.31.92

Taped from Wembley Stadium in London, drawing 78,000 and paying $2.2 million, an insane gate for the time. Buyrate was only 1.5, which was a big drop from 91 and was directly attributable to lack of Orange Goblin.

However, given that this was the first ever wrestling PPV available in Edmonton, I immediately bought it as soon as it was announced, so Vince got my money for it. I also talked my dad into ordering Halloween Havoc and Survivor Series and Starrcade that year, and those weren’t such great decisions.

The SmarK Rant for WWF Summerslam 91 – 08.26.91

UGH.  New format rant last time I did this back in 2007.  Let’s redo it 2021 style.

LIVE from Madison Square Garden, drawing 20,000 people and a 2.7 buyrate.  Does the Garden even hold 20,000 people? It did that night, to quote Kevin Nash!

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan & Rowdy Roddy Piper

NUPTIALS TURN TO NAPALM!  You cannot say Vince didn’t know how to get his own product over.

The SmarK Rant for WWF Summerslam 1990

Live from Philly.

Your hosts are Vince McMahon & Roddy Piper

This is of course a show that is LOOOOOOOOONG overdue for a redo, given that it was originally written in 1997.  Luckily I have my trusty Anthology collection to pull the full PPV version from instead of the Coliseum video that I’ve been watching for the last couple of decades.  And since this clocks in at 2:40 instead of the 2:00 I’m used to, obviously I’ve missed some stuff.  The ridiculous number of deaths on this show also led me to keep track as I went along, just because.

Summerslam Countdown 2021: The SmarK Rant for WWF Summerslam 88

(OK, we might as well do this again!  I’m on vacation for two weeks so we’ll see how many gaps I can fill in before I’m back at work.)

The SmarK Anthology Rant for WWF Summerslam 88

– Yes, the Summerslam Anthology is finally here from Amazon, and finally I can see the first ever Summerslam in the full and uncut PPV form instead of the 2-hour Coliseum video version I’ve had to live with for the past 20 (!!!!) years.  Holy fuck I feel old now.  Anyway, once again I must point out that we didn’t have PPV in Canada until 1992, so the video version was the only one I ever got to see until now.  Thankfully after the excess of Wrestlemania IV, this show was a bit more on the lean side time-wise, clocking in at 2.5 hours total according to the DVD player.
