Yoshinari as the GHC Champion

I still struggle to comprehend they did this

To put it in perspective, this would have be equivalent to Scotty 2 Hotty catching Triple H with a flash roll up to win the title in 2000

The pop when he wins is something else I suppose. He had the thing for 5 months as well!

Takayama, the guy who finally beat him for it, lost the belt to Misawa something like 3 weeks later. You’ve reviewed those two matches in your best of 2002 Japan from a while back

But anyway, 2002 NOAH = weird

Not as weird as Inoki going bonkos for MMA guys shortly afterwards and putting the IWGP title on seemingly anything with a gi, but yeah, there was some strange stuff getting smoked in Japan at the time.

How Strange With Sting

Scott,
When you now step back and look at the whole  deal with Sting over the last few months, doesn't it strike everyone as extremely odd and weird? He came in to help vanquish The Authority, which he did,but then they managed to return within weeks. He then made limited appearances, barely spoke, then when he did it had all become about WCW and the Monday Night Wars. When he and HHH finally fight,he not only loses in the midcard but is totally buried on commentary, overshadowed storywise by Hogan/Shawn etc, then is now seemingly done with wrestling while HHH moves onto the next big angle within a hour or so. Vince then says what he said at the conference call. Did Steve Borden really look at all this BS and think "Yeah, cool, sign me up….looks great"? Why did it HAVE to be HHH with him anyway? Why not hotshot a better, bigger match with Cena or Taker that would make more actual money? I can say they basically didn't trust Sting to have a good match with anyone but HHH, but yeah, as storylines go it wasn't exactly a masterpiece.  Not to mention that the blowoff was HHH cheating outrageously and using 4 guys to beat Sting, finishing him off with a sledgehammer to the face, to which Sting grudgingly admits HHH is the better guy.  And Sting's whole deal was built up as taking down the Authority and making sure there was no corrupt power like Bischoff, and he LOST.  And then HHH came out later in the SAME SHOW and basically said "Holy shit, it's great to be a corrupt power figure!  In fact, I'm more corrupt than ever!"

Still, at least Ric Flair didn't turn on him this time, so I count it as a win for him.

QOTD 136 (2nd attempt): Strange Coincidences

What are some of the weirder coincidences you’ve experienced or come across in life?

Well, other than posting a QOTD two seconds ago that was exactly like a question Scott posted while I was writing it up, there are certainly far too many to mention off the top of my head.

One I will mention is that I, on a lark, downloaded a football game on my phone called “Pro strategy football 2012” and enjoyed it quite a lot. It reminded me a bit of an older, super obscure game I downloaded as a child called “Tom Landry Football”, low and behold after contacting the dev and liking it on facebook, the guy who wrote this new game was actually the guy who made that Tom Landry game I discovered however many years ago.

Small world.

Another one: For whatever reason Mr. Winfield lists his hometown as Bridgewater, Massachusetts, which happens to be where I live, so for about a week and a half I thought we 1) Legitimately lived near each other and 2) Was this person Marc (with a c) I knew until I found out the guy lived in California.

I also have a long lost brother who let me design a car for him. The horn plays La Cucaracha.

Also Lincoln’s secretary was named Kennedy, Kennedy’s was named Lincoln, and the guy on the grassy knoll actually grew up to star in “The League” believe it or not.
