No Stips/Gimmicks in Major Mania Singles Matches?

Hi, Scott.  Are you surprised that none of the four (five, if you assume Rollins-Orton gets added) major singles matches at Wrestlemania currently have either a gimmick (e.g. no DQ for Cena-Rusev) or a stipulation (e.g. Rollins' briefcase is on the line)?  All of them have a plausible argument for some sort of no DQ/extreme rules match, whether for story (Cena-Rusev and Orton-Rollins) or to provide some smoke and mirrors for a potentially poor match (the other three).

I know most recent Mania singles matches have just been wrestling matches, but could adding something to one or two of the matches give at least a little juice to the card, or is it simply too late with only two weeks to go?

I wish I could give you a less cynical answer to this question, but there's really only two factors behind it, I'm pretty sure:
1)  They don't give a shit about actually booking the show in a way people care about.
2)  They want to save all of the rematches for whatever show is after Wrestlemania (Extreme Rules again?) and thus do 8 million stip matches there.
It is what it is.

Bret Hart singles push

Scott,

Do you think the Bret Hart push should have started sooner?  They clearly always had plans of pushing him solo, even when he and Anvil were competing for the tag titles.  I feel like they should have just had Demolition retain at SummerSlam and built up to them dropping the titles to newly-arrived LOD.  Bret could have started his push right after SummerSlam '90.    Maybe do Perfect-Bret for the IC title at Mania 7 (with someone else insulting Boss Man's mama and such) AND a re-match at SummerSlam '91.

That was absolutely the original goal.  The whole point of the phantom title switch was that they fired Neidhart for cost-cutting reasons and were 100% ready to proceed with the Bret push.  But then they changed their mind and un-fired Neidhart.  As you note, they probably shouldn't have bothered.  Building to Demos v. LOD at WM would have been pretty awesome, whether or not Eadie was involved.

Stars of the 80’s who never got a singles title.

Hey Scott,

I was bored watching my fantasy football team beat up Hollywood Fuj today, so I popped in my Greatest Stars of the 80's dvd. It got me thinking, there were several guys during that time who never got to wear a singles title in the WWE.  Piper eventually got the I-C belt, but others didn't fair so well. One of my favorite guys, Paul Orndoff sticks out. That cage match with Hogan was one of the first big feel matches I remember watching and getting into. It seemed like he should have parlayed that into at least a transitional I-C run. Same with Jake Roberts and Bob Orton. These guys weren't really come in for 6 months and then leave guys, they had a good few years in the company. Anybody else from that period stand out to you as someone who deserved at least a brief title run ala Piper's three month run with the Intercontinental belt?

Well the problem is that titles actually meant something back then and it was tougher to just slot someone in for a few months, but clearly Ted Dibiase should have gotten something, and Jake Roberts for sure.  If not for Honky, Jake would have had to get a cup of coffee with the IC title.  With Orndorff it was pretty much the World title or nothing, I'd say.
