Howdy Blog O’Doomers!

Still dealing with the time zone jump and general post vacation issues. I’m sick and I have no clue what time zone this publish button is on so rather than take a chance you guys get an early thread.

Saw Beast in the East. Liked it. Really growing to like Neville a lot. His stuff looks pretty damn smooth in the ring. Last week (on the old site as I wasn’t in a spot to get my WP account), I said Rick Rude’s U.S. title reign of 14 months through 1991 and 1992 was better than any of Lex Luger’s U.S. title reigns. I say that with the precursor that Luger ABSOLUTELY should have won the World title between 1988-1990 and Flair should have put him over. But Rude had ridiculously good matches with Sting, probably had a better match with Steamboat than Luger’s match at Bash ’89 and he was the centerpiece of arguably the best match in WCW history. So there!

Anyway enjoy the go home RAW tonight for whatever PPV is coming up. Enjoy the Home Run Derby if it doesn’t rain out and enjoy the Gold Cup soccer game.

Keep it clean!

July 4th Open Thread

Not much to talk about on here so TV tonight:

Lots of Baseball. ESPN has Texas vs. Baltimore I think.

I think the Comedy Central Website has like…every Daily Show ever or something.

There’s other stuff on too but nothing sticks out to me as worth listing unless you guys are really enjoying the final weeks of the Bachelorette. Might be a NetFlix night for me if RAW can’t deliver.

Enjoy and keep it clean!

Monday Night Open Mic

Howdy Blog O’Doomers!

Hope everyone had a good weekend and are excited for another week of life. I really enjoy reading this blog and reading these comments and last week we seemed to have a nice run of dream matches or pairings that never happened and some that did.

As Scott and I both mentioned in one of the threads the ultimate babyface team of Tito Santana and Ricky Steamboat did team up once against the Dream Team in like 1985 or something. It is on YouTube in full and yes it’s awesome as it sounds. For one thing it’s at the old Maple Leaf Gardens with the long ramp and for another Steamboat and Tito decided to wear matching baby blue trunks to further cement their babyfaced-ness.

The Hogan-Dusty pairing never happened to my knowledge and why didn’t they have a tag match against Savage and DiBiase on a SNME is well beyond me. For one thing we could book this match ourselves with the The Real American Dreams storming to the ring (separate entrances of course) and cleaning house for five minutes with DiBiase and Savage bumping from pillar to post. The Million Dollar Macho Kings (Fantasy Sports Team Name Alert!) eventually take over, with some distraction from Sherri and pound Dusty through a commercial break. Eventually Dusty makes the hot tag and in 1990 there’s no human being alive that could survive the big boot-elbow drop-leg drop combo right?

Figuring out how to do the Megapowers vs. Demolition in 1988 would be a lot harder. The Demos were still heels at Summerslam but they held the straps so you couldn’t just job them in the main event. So you would have to have the Harts stay heel, regain the title at Wrestlemania IV and then that frees up Demolition to be bought by DiBiase to end the Megapowers and there’s your Summerslam match. Demos could win the titles at the fall SNME against the Harts or someone else and still have a year-long reign and still turn at Survivor Series.

Anyway for TV tonight:

Women’s World Cup: U.S. vs. Colombia at 8 p.m.

College World Series: Virginia vs. Vanderbilt.

RAW of course

More baseball

American Ninja Warrior

HBO is doing a documentary of the gun violence in America that happened in the spring of 2014. How ironic is that? The sequel is happening before my eyes.

Enjoy the night and keep it clean!

Monday Night Open Mic

Howdy Blog O’ Doomers!

Obviously it’s been a very melancholy sort of week since the last Open Mic with the death of Dusty Rhodes. For me my wrestling fandom came from my dad when I was a little kid growing up in the panhandle of Florida. Usually the Graham’s Florida territory didn’t make their way up to where I lived back then since Pensacola-through, they tended to stick between Tampa and Orlando and would usually do a Jacksonville show or two during their summer tour each year and maybe once every year they would get to Tallahassee also. But my dad would drive me and my mom to Jacksonville in like the late 70s and early 80s to see my aunt and uncle and he and my uncle would “go to the fights” and he always would bring me back a program. But he loved Dusty Rhodes, Wahoo McDaniel and Harley Race and Blackjack Mulligan and the Funk Brothers and all those guys that would work Florida. So when we’d watch Crockett Promotions or Championship Wrestling from Florida it was always about those guys. I used to love his hair — that old redneck sort of perm he sported — and my dad was so into the promos of him and all the guys. He was such a mark….

Anyway as I got older, married and moved to the Tampa Bay area…Once in a while we’d go to the FCW tapings on Dale Mabry in Tampa and after the card Dusty would stick around and meet the fans. I always enjoyed the way he interacted with the younger fans. He’d ask them who their favorite stars were and sign autographs and take pictures. And he had this cowboy he would always put on these kids before the picture so this oversized hat fell over their faces and then he would flash that smile. It was the cutest thing and he just seemed to really be drawn to fans and people in general. As a mom I’m always interested to see how people treat kids and he was just so kind and funny and personable with them.

It was big news in this area when he died. Big in the papers, big on the sports radio and you would hear these stories about him working the armories in Tampa or New Port Richey or Plant City or the Bayfront Center in St. Petersburg (for the really big arena shows) and afterwards he’d see some fans and ask where the party was or where the barbecue was (in those days the big arena show was usually held in the early afternoon on weekends so they could work another house that night or vice versa) and as the stories go he would actually stop by the parties and the barbecues to meet the fans and have a drink or eat a burger or try to find him a nice woman for the evening. The more you hear the stories…the more you realized that Dusty really was a unique figure and a larger-than-life guy here in Florida during that period. I’m looking forward to seeing what they do for him tonight and on the network.

On TV tonight

The Tampa Bay Lightning will attempt to save the world from the evil known as the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

College World Series…I think Virginia vs. Florida is the game tonight.

Monday Night Open Mic

Howdy Blog O’Doomers!

I hope this first day of June was fruitful to all! For the most part I enjoyed the Network Special last night even though things were pretty dull after Owens-Cena. Still Owens-Cena was so good it was going to be hard for anything else to happen that would compare to that.

Obviously that wasn’t Cena’s first great match and it wasn’t his first clean job but he truly made a star last night. He’s elevated guys many times before but they had already established themselves. C.M. Punk had a dominating run as World Champion on Smackdown and an Undertaker program before his historic MitB match with Cena. Bryan also had a dominating run on Smackdown and several high-quality matches for the WWE Title with Punk before Cena gave him the final rub at Summerslam 2013 before Orton/HHH sucked the life out of it.

This was different. Not everyone watches NXT, not everyone has the Network so there were a lot of people who really didn’t know who Kevin Owens was before he crashed the U.S. open challenge a couple weeks ago. So this match wasn’t just about Cena laying down, it was about getting Owens over as a wrestling talent and a threat on the main roster. So on June 1 the more casual viewers know who Owens is, they know he is a bad ass worker and they know he’s a threat to any top spot on the main roster. They also know that the NXT champion must be a big deal if the guy holding the strap just beat John Cena. Might have been Cena’s best work as a professional in his 9-10 years as a top guy.

Anyway for TV tonight

NCAA Softball National Championship (Florida vs. Michigan)

Not to bother you guys enjoying the music chat but he’s the nightly thread.

I liked the Network Special. Good opener. Very good tag match as New Day and Tyson/Cesaro are meshing to the point of where you can give them 15 minutes and get the hell out of the way. And that’s pretty incredible given the short period of time both teams have competed against each other.

Couldn’t explain why Rusev and Cena had such a horrible, plodding match. But I didn’t this format for them because both guys are supposed to be superhero/supervillian types and someone’s not going to look good in an I Quit match. But what I like about the few I Quit matches that have worked is they have relatively kept it in the 20 x 20. Try to have a wrestling, work on a body part, throw in some submissions and sell the drama of trying to escape or survive the submissions rather than use every bell and whistle in the book. Both guys can wrestle strong style so they should have done a lot better.

Very good main event and man Orton is just eating these pinfalls. The Shield spot was great as was the aftermath with Rollins holding out the fist and getting pummeled for it. That’s called a double payoff right there.

Anyway TV:

RAW is Live

ECF Game 2: Go Lightning!

RAW is Live from somewhere

NBA Playoffs has the Hawks-Wizards and Grizz-Warriors tonight.

No NHL Hockey tonight. The Lightning are starting to piss me off. Michel Thierren is getting hit with a guitar over the head tomorrow. Watch!

Reds-Braves are in a rain delay on ESPN so they are talking about Tom Brady being a cheating bastard.

New episodes of Dancing with the Stars, The Voice, Bates Motel…I think it’s the season finale of Bates Motel.

And Letterman is in it’s final weeks of shows. I think it’s this week and next week.

Well another WWE Network Special in the books. I liked the early stuff with the tag match going very well with booking straight from the mid-80s in Crockett Promotions. Now the promotions in a spot that they could take advantage of…tag team wrestling is kind of strong right now. Kidd-Cesaro is a great team, very athletic, they have a good chemistry, they are extremely funny when they are allowed to do some verbal pieces.

I think some will say The New Day got over by accident but I look at it and they did the natural thing. A face act that was too clean to get over so they got even cleaner and people hate them more and now they can take the mantra as the pretty boy heel team. Similar to why I liked the Rougeaus so much. They were so shiny and fake you could see through them. New Day has a similar appeal and Xavier Woods gives them that good, annoying mouthpiece.

And you’ve got the Lucha Dragons, which people seem to like, and the Usos, who people don’t seem to like as much anymore but they are strong, reliable workers. We need another team and this might be a good spot for Ascension to jump back in and maybe another team from NXT. If they could get six tag teams going I’d feel pretty good about the status of that division. If nothing else it’s given people like Kidd and Kofi and Big E new life.

The rest of the show was fine for me. Big Show-Reigns was fun. The main event was a little too predictable for me and in my opinion a steel cage match doesn’t work well without blood. Overall it wasn’t a blow away show but there was enough good to make it enjoyable.

And now to the TV

Game 7 NHL Playoff Game between the Islanders and Capitals.

Game 6 NHL Playoff Game between the Red Wings and Lightning.

Chicago, Atlanta and Memphis try to close out their first round NBA Playoff series.

Nationals-Braves on ESPN

New Gotham, Bates Motel, The Voice, Dancing with the Stars, etc. etc.

My PBS show for the night is Dick Cavett’s “Vietnam” which is a comp of old clips of that show as people would discuss the ongoing Vietnam conflict.

And of course RAW

Wanted to hit on a bunch but don’t have time.

Watched the Savage doc. I didn’t feel the need to get too much into his wrestling so I enjoyed more of the total life aspect they went with. Even though Lanny is probably covering for him a bit in terms of the Elizabeth stuff I appreciate that younger brother had his back.

It was good stuff but a lot of it hit home because I’ve driven down the road in Seminole he had his fateful accident hundreds of times. I knew the complex on Sunset Beach where he had his condo. I’ve been to the Ferg’s sports bar referenced many times. I know some of the people that wrote the stories in the newspaper clips so it was kind of nice to hear all these local people in my community speak so highly of him. And the fact that he was, at least by the accounts in the documentary, happy and committed to spending his days with his family and wife makes the sudden death all that much more sad.

Anyway also watched WM a second time, this time on the big screen and the Orton-Rollins was much better than I thought. Really good stuff. Still a great main event that told a pretty good little story. Good stuff.

I wonder where they are going to go with some guys. What do you do with Rusev if you want Cena to have a good title reign? There’s not a lot of money in a heel chasing a face for a title. And with Rollins holding the World strap that won’t be a possible route.

What do you do with Bray? He’s completely directionless. I think they need to get the Wyatt Family back in another form. Obviously Harper is fine without him but Rowan could come back. Or I suggested in a thread to form a new family with real-life brother Bo Dallas and a third guy like Rhyno, who can be used as enforcing veteran to back the young guys and help them get over while taking some falls for them. Or go the full Raven route and give him a Flock. Throw Zach Ryder and Heath Slater and other guys that aren’t doing anything. His gimmick is one that he needs to be leading a stable of some sort.

Well that was a pretty fun Wrestlemania eh? One thing about that particular event is that even the “bad” Wrestlemanias give you something to latch onto be it a special entrance or a particular segment. Yesterday, without the budget of having a live act sing someone out they spiced up the entrances even more than normal. Rusev’s tank entrance was amazing and he’s earn that sort of buildup with his work over the past year.

The matches were all good. I thought the main event was spectacular and the swerve at the end was brilliant. Brock Lesnar continues to elevate as the top babyface in the company. Seth Rollins has really earned the opportunity he got last night. I thought Roman Reigns was great in the match even though he apparently can’t do anything right. I enjoyed his comeback segments and it gave the match some depth. Blood helped too and I’m glad if that’s going to happen they save it for Wrestlemania.

The Rock-Rousey/McMahons segment would have been better about five minutes shorter and with Steph going down to a real armbar, but I guess there were reasons that should have happened. Only problem with the segment was by HHH bumping for Rhonda you really can’t sell her as a women’s wrestler down the road. As talented as the NXT workers are it would be tough to take any of them seriously against her in a worked fight because she beat up men. Better booking would have been for Steph to take the hip toss and barely escape the armbar. At least she would have actually bumped.

Other than that, enjoy the RAW after Wrestlemania. Should be very entertaining because of the fan reactions.

Also on TV:

Women’s Elite Eight: UConn should kill Dayton but Tennessee-Maryland might be good.

NHL has six games with Lightning-Canadiens and Kings-Blackhawks having major playoff implications

NBA has seven games with Houston-Toronto being the best of the bunch

I think ESPN or ESPN2 has some Arena Football on late tonight

Comedy Central Roast of Justin Beiber is tonight

New Episodes of: Better Call Saul, The Voice, Dancing with the Stars, Bates Motel, American Dad, Two Broke Girls…tons to watch!

Try to keep it clean…but if you can’t just don’t be too bad.

Well the Road to Wrestlemania comes to its final turn tonight.

I will admit, the ending last week with Sting and Orton cleaning house got me a little interested. It looked cool, it was fun, it promoted a couple of programs and worked for all involved. I am an easy sell though because I love Wrestlemania. Even if I’m not crazy about the booking or the direction I want to see the pagentry, see the ring entrance set up, check out the atmosphere, etc.

As for the Wrestlemania threads, I think we’ll stick with last year’s plan of having a thread for pre-show and doing them hourly for the show. Disqus probably can’t handle 5-10K posts on a single thread. Last year we hit about 10-12K between the five of them. If someone has a better idea, I’m all ears.

As for TV tonight

Wrestlemania go home show for RAW

New Episodes of Better Call Saul, Dancing with the Stars, The Voice, American Dad, Scorpion, Bates Motel, etc. etc.

7 NHL Games, 6 NBA Games, Second Round of Women’s NCAA tournament begins…Probably some Men’s NIT too.

Enjoy and Keep it Clean!
