WWF Dream Match?

Hi Scott,

Here's a 1980's dream match that could have happened, should have happened, but never did–and doesn't seem to get talked about, either.

Between Summerslam 88 and The Main Event 89, the WWF had arguably the two hottest tag teams in the country (which is saying something considering the NWA tag roster at the time)–the Megapowers and Demolition. The former were just done headlining the second biggest PPV of the year and the latter were solidifying themselves in the most dominant WWF Tag Team Championship run of all time.  On one side, it was the two biggest singles stars and on the other, the most over tag team of the decade.  But instead of letting them headline a PPV, SNME, or hpuse show run, the WWF rushes a Demolition fave turn at Survivor Series that no one in the live crowd even noticed.  What gives?  I know the WWF champ (Savage) and the tag champs (Demos) were used to headline two different touring groups so that would explain the lack of house show match ups. But at least an SNME headlined by these four? Or even replace the Twin Towers with Demolition in The Main Event in February 1989?

Megapowers v. Demolition would have been too awesome for one arena to contain.  That's the only reason I can think of.

WWE.com “top 8 dream matches for WrestleMania XXX”

Saw this on Reddit.   People on there are throwing the word "trolling" around, but how far 'in' the loop is WWE.com anyway? Are they purposefully and knowingly listing, say, Batista/Brock because it's definitely not happening?

I'm pretty sure the Cena/UT thing is trolling us hardcore, although I will say that the WWE.com nerds typically have almost zero connection with the nerds who write the shows, so this sort of thing is all just conjecture on their part.
Pretty decent card, though.  I'm glad to see them floating the idea of doing MITB on the show again.

Dream Matches

FIgured this might be fun fodder for blog discussion. I’m a big proponent of having Cena/Undertaker headline this year’s show. I suppose it’s possible it’s being saved for next year, or it will never happen as Vince sees them both as equal draws to the show (which isn’t really wrong, Hogan/Andre was a money idea but Hogan drew far more just by himself at that point than Andre ever could so there wasn’t much “waste” aspect to it). Either way, it doesn’t look like it’s gonna happen this year. This got me thinking about some of the biggest missed opportunities of all time, specifically for Wrestlemania: Hogan/Flair in 1992 (obviously the most famous) Hogan/Austin in 2002-2003. HBK/Rock in 2003-2010 Can you think of any other “dream matches” that really should have headlined the show at some point? Ones that by all rights should have happened, not stuff like Punk/HBK which could have happened if Punk had ascended the card sooner than he did.

Hall & Nash v. Rock & Austin in 2002, maybe?  Doesn’t feel like there would be a big enough tag team to challenge the Outsiders other than that, unless you went with Outsiders v. Brothers of Destruction.  Brock Lesnar v. Austin was really a thing that should have happened, although the timing wasn’t right for Wrestlemania.  And on another note…

Hey here’s a question for the Doomers…..What is the last, legit “Dream Match” left in North American wrestling? And not what you would just like to see, but what could legitimately happen with two guys physically fit enough to square off with proper build up? Is Sting vs Undertaker all that remains? Possibly, and yes, it gets my vote I would pay to see it. Is Austin vs Punk even a reality? I would pay. Goldberg vs Taker or Cena? HBK vs Sting? Undertaker vs Great Muta?

Yeah, Sting’s kind of the magic bullet for dream matches, although part of the problem now is that no one is big enough of a personality to warrant a “dream match”.  I’d say something like Samoa Joe coming to WWE for a series of matches with Punk and Bryan would be awesome if everyone is motivated.  Plus Joe would be one of the few allowed on Punk’s bus.

Building a Dream Territory

Got another question for you and the BoD Bayless.

People like to fantasy-book and armchair-QB, how about I throw you a fantasy-office?

This is your task:

Pick a classic territory, can’t be national (AWA, Memphis, Mid-South… can’t be WWF after 84, or WCW)

The rule is nobody can be used twice. Your Owner can’t be your booker. You champ can’t be an agent.

1. Owner (So you can do Stampede, but pick Watts)
2. 2 man booking team (main booker, finish guy)
3. 3 agents
4. Lead Babyface
5. Lead Heel
6. Lead Tag (face or heel)
7. Rookie, who is going to going to have the rocket strapped to his ass. (face or heel)

I assume we are picking people that actually fit together in a certain time period.

For the territory, I will pick WWF 1983

1. Vince McMahon Jr.
2. Bill Watts & Eddie Graham
3. Pat Patterson, Verne Gagne, Ray Stevens
4. Kerry Von Erich
5. Ric Flair
6. Freebirds
7. Barry Windham (He was in the business for a few years but still very young)

What do you guys think?

Dream Super Hero Team

All right Scott, I know you're a fanboy so I figured you and the blog could have some fun with this scenario: you get tagged to write a comic book, not just any book, but the Justice League. and you can add any eight characters of the pre-Flashpoint DCU, but here's a few rules.

1. None of the Big Three can be on the team, that's right, no Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman

2. they have to have one wild card character

3. the leader has to have been a leader of another DCU team

4. and one of the members dies at the end of the first arc, but it can't be the wild card character

I won't put my squad because I don't want to influence anybody, but it's still a pretty cool concept. go

Those are some pretty arbitrary rules.
I'd go with Nightwing as leader, with Flash (WALLY WEST), Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner), Booster Gold, Blue Beetle, Captain Marvel, Donna Troy and I'm not sure what you mean by "wild card" character but I'd throw Ambush Bug on there for additional comic relief because he's convinced that he's related to Blue Beetle.  For the first arc I'd kill Donna Troy because she's come back from worse, and probably replace her with either Power Girl or Martian Manhunter.

10 Dream Matches that Actually Happened

Interesting list. I'd buy it if it were a DVD, especially that Flair/Angle match (which I remember as being very good).

They need to format it Cracked-style and call it "10 Impossible Dream Matches (That Actually Happened!)" for maximum effect, but yeah WWE.com has been pumping out some nerd-riffic lists recently and I'm liking it.  God bless WCW Saturday Night for producing random weirdness and great matches over the years.

Dream Matches we just barely missed out on

Hola, Scott, somewhat of a long time reader, first time writer, etc.
Are there any matches that would be considered 'dream matches' that were almost guaranteed to be ****+ and they just barely didn't happen due to a backstage issue or a quick booking change or anything of the like? One I can think of is Chris Benoit vs CM Punk that was set for Vengeance '07, but you know what happened there… Are there any others that you know of/can think of?

The one that always drives me nuts is that we never got Sting & Luger v. The Megapowers as a PPV headlining match in 1995.  They were even building towards it on the early Nitros!  Of course the most glaring one in history is the total lack of Demolition (Ax & Smash) v. Legion of Doom.  We only ever got it once, at a house show when Crush was out, but every other match in the feud was either a six-man with Warrior or Smash & Crush as the team.

I Dream of Wrestling

I’m going to admit something that I’m not proud of, but at least your readers can have fun ridiculing me.

Do you ever dream about wrestling angles?

Occasionally I will.  The other night I dreamed I was watching TNA and the Aces and Eights unmasked and it was Jeff Jarrett and Eric Young.  I was SO pissed off.  Now if I’m getting this and don’t even write reviews, what must the great Scott Keith be having during the midnight hour?  I’m not alone in this right?

RIGHT?

I checked a dream manual, and it means you might be gay.  Sorry to have to be the one to tell you.

Dream Matches

Thumbing through your archives, I came across your post saying Cena/Rock is the only "Dream Match" left. I don’t think I quite agree, though it’s close. I’d argue all of the following count, though:
CM Punk vs. Austin (apparently going to happen) Rock vs. Cena (definitely going to happen)
Sting vs. Taker (not going to happen and would probably suck if it did)
Shawn Michaels vs. Rock (snowball’s chance of it happening, but both guys can still go and both guys still take money from WWE so never say never…)
Did I miss any? I mean, plugging Rock/Shawn/Austin in against your favorite modern superstar doesn’t really count, I think (mayyyyyyyybe Shawn/Bryan just for the whole teacher/student thing), but other than that… I dunno, is there anybody we never got to see Brock or Batista face?

Each other, I’m pretty sure.  I’d also count Brock v. Cena, because the John Cena who got the PPV match in 2004 is not the same guy who was World champion a year later.  That match done today would be EPIC.  I don’t think we ever saw Cena-Flair, although at this point we wouldn’t want to.  You can play all kinds of time travel games as well, but if we’re sticking to matches that could realistically happen TODAY, I can’t think of many more.  Brock v. Joe?  D-Bry v. AJ Styles?  Oh!  Daniel Bryan v. Kurt Angle, that would rock it.
