I always thought you had a rather healthy respect for Cena over the years but I recently watched Taboo Tuesday 2005 and thought the main event of Cena vs. Michaels vs. Angle was one of the best triple threat matches I’ve seen in a while, so I checked out your review and was surprised to see you gave it only ***, and was even more surprised to see this: “They team up and send Cena into the post to get rid of him, and then team up to put him through the Spanish announce table for good measure. So it’s time to get down to the business of having an awesome match without him. Nice of you to show up, John, enjoy the match from ringside”, and this “Cena was WAY out of his league here, like Lyle Lovett and Julia Roberts getting married type of out of his league.” So at what point Scott do you think you became aware that Cena could hold up his end in the ring?

Easy answer:  Wrestlemania whatever it was where Cena defended against Shawn Michaels, and then the RAW where they did the one-hour match and Cena was barely sweating at the end.  Those were two major match situations where he needed to deliver, and he did.  Plus he hung with Shawn Michaels, and that ain’t not for nothing.

Hey Scott, Im thrilled at the prospect of u reviewing WWE programming again. Question for u regarding Cena. How is he not blamed for slumping PPv buys and Raw ratings slipping.  I read on this week’s Observer that the segment featuring Cena’s match actually LOST viewers. Im just curious.

Because he sells assloads of merchandise and draws at house shows just as much as anyone else they could possibly push to the top would.  I don’t think anyone could argue that Cena isn’t the biggest draw of the modern (post-Austin) era, so he’s gonna get some slack when it comes to dropping buyrates and ratings.  Besides, buyrates are in the toilet because of fundamental problems with their business, not the people who they push on top.
