Mike Reviews – WCW Monday Nitro (4th August 1997)

Greetings Friends!

Another Nitro review today, as we cover one of Lex Luger’s greatest moments.

WCW was riding high during the summer of 1997, with the New World Order storyline continuing to be a hot hand for them, with a big Hollywood Hogan Vs Sting match still on the horizon for when they decided to pull the trigger on it.

It wasn’t just Sting gunning for Hogan though, as Lex Luger had been looking for a Title shot with The Woodster for most of the summer and he was due to finally get it on a 3 hour special of Nitro (Nitro hadn’t made the permanent move to 3 hours yet).

Interestingly this show was due to take place at The Palace of Auburn Hills, which was the site of one of Luger’s most infamous “chokes”, where he had failed to win the WWF Title from Yokozuna but still celebrated like he had, thus looking like a chump in the process.

Would he be able to shed the “choker” label for one night? Let’s watch on and find out!

LIVE from somewhere.  Kind of funny that the show which changed wrestling forever wasn’t important enough to warrant a mention of the city.

Hour #1!  Hosted by Tony Schiavone and Larry Z.  They’re at ringside, which immediately gives the show a different look and feel.  Tony is LEAGUES above Bischoff as an announcer at this point, and immediately the show feels more important and sportlike.

Mike Reviews – WCW Monday Nitro (6th of July 1998)

Hey Yo!

I decided to review this episode of because we’re a few days away from it being 23 years since Goldberg won the WCW Title (Spoiler) so why not go back and watch the entire show? This was a big night for WCW in the ratings, as hot shotting a Hogan Vs Goldberg match for the Title ended up ensuring Nitro won the ratings battle for the night quite easily. Of course, they’d also given away a sure fire money match that might have potentially destroyed their previous biggest buy rate, but if they’d held it off till a pay per view then Eric Bischoff couldn’t proudly declare that he won a single night of the ratings war, and that just wouldn’t do would it?

I decided to use my WWE Network “Thank You” credit of $25 to pick up the Best of Sting on Blu-Ray.  No idea what’s on it. But I enjoy the work of Sting and wish him to get royalties, and it was free, so there you go. (Still haven’t watched it yet 6 years later!  And man, remember when they actually tried to get people to subscribe to the Network and cared about it?)

All the cool kids are watching Nitro on Monday nights, you know.

LIVE (after a one week break for a mini-series) from Winston-Salem, NC

Your hosts are Eric Bischoff, Bobby Heenan & Mongo.  Funny how Bischoff keeps calling it “the Warzone”, considering what RAW would become less than a year later.

(Originally written sometime in 2015, but I’m getting confused about the dates because apparently I posted the 2/19 RAW show last week as the 2/12 show, when in fact there was no 2/12 show due to the dog show.  So this week’s repost is an unopposed Nitro rant!)

Apparently I never did this one, as it was probably missing from the archives at the point when I was doing them, or I just fucked up.  The former seems far more likely.  So here you go, a special BONUS NITRO RANT!
