AWA Superclash 85

Greetings, sir. I came across this on youtube and thought you might enjoy it. I don’t know if you’ve seen or reviewed it, but I think it’s worth a look.
Happy 2021.
I certainly did review it when it was on WWE 24/7 back in the day, but here’s a repost in case anyone hasn’t read it, yourself included.

The SmarK 24/7 Rant for AWA SuperClash ’85  (September 28 1985)

– For some reason the full show didn’t appear on Sasktel until yesterday’s update, so I’ve been holding off until now.  But I’ve been dying to see the full show for years now, so this is continued evidence of the awesomeness of the people who program this channel.  The concept is that all the major non-WWF promotions are working together to beat the WWF, but since they can’t agree on ordering a cup of coffee, let alone running a show, things don’t work out.  But it was quite the attempt.  The most awesome story I’ve heard about this mess is that David Crockett, acting as the agent for the NWA, spent most of the time signing up AWA stars for his brother.  Now those are some balls.

– Taped from Chicago, IL, in the sadly empty baseball stadium.  It drew about 20,000, but it would have been better served in an arena.

– Hosted by Larry Nelson

The SmarK Rant for WWE Network Hidden Gems – AWA Team Challenge Series!

(I mean…I pretty much HAD to repost this one given the current empty arena situation, right?)

No word of a lie, I almost feel like my entire career has been merely a series of incidental occurrences, all building up to this moment. I feel like Ultimate Warrior running down to the ring at Summerslam 88, so excited to destroy his hapless opponent that he doesn’t even know where to begin.

Well, Hidden Gems might be gone now, but I’ve still got some left on the Network that I never had a chance to finish up.  And this is one that’s pretty appropriate for the season – The AWA Christmas night show in 1986, featuring the Rockers against Rose & Somers in a legendary cage match!

Taped from St. Paul, MN

Your hosts are Rod Trongard & Dick Jonkowski

The SmarK Rant for WWE Network Hidden Gems–Road to SuperClash III

The SmarK Rant for WWE Network Hidden Gems – The Road to SuperClash III – 09.18.88

Yeah, NXT is up on the Network now, sure, but how can I watch that when I have 2.5 hours of an AWA TV taping reconstructed as a Hidden Gem? This is literally like catnip for me.

So yeah, the idea here is that the fine folks at the Network have taken all the available footage from an AWA/World Class/Memphis/Continental combined TV taping in 1988, leading up to the disaster that was SuperClash, and mashed it together into what is basically a complete show. Like, how cool is that?! I wish they’d do that with Superstars or Challenge tapings from the 80s and add the dark matches and everything.  Anyway, most of this ended up on the ESPN show, I believe.

The SmarK Rant for AWA WrestleRock ’86 (04.20.86)

Not to be confused with Rock N’ Wrestling. Not that ANYONE would. Just in case you might be confused…

Live from Minneapolis, MN, drawing 22,000 to the Metrodome. I mean, reasonably impressive for the AWA, but that stadium was looking SPARSE on the wide shots. Maybe just doing an arena show would have been a better idea? By the end of the show the camera side was filling up pretty good, so they probably managed to paper the shit out of it. I can’t remember the details from that issue of the Observer or even if Dave reviewed the show.

Oddly, I’ve never done this show, and someone e-mailed asking for it, so why not?

Your host is Rod Trongaard, who could REALLY use a color man.
