TJR Retro: WWF Smackdown 04/27/00 Review (Steve Austin Returns)

This was the go-home show for the WWF heading into Backlash. The big story for this episode is that Steve Austin was there to send a message to Triple H and his buddies. There was a memorable moment in the “main event” of this episode.

Here’s the synopsis from WWE Network: “Steve Austin plays mind games with the McMahon-Helmsley regime. What surprises does the Texas Rattlesnake have in store for DX?”

TJR Retro: WWF Raw Deal 04/24/00 Review (Last Raw Before Backlash)

This was the last episode of Raw before Backlash 2000. Things were really heating with most of the Backlash card known at this point. The main storyline was Triple H defending the WWF Title against The Rock at Backlash with Vince McMahon in Triple H’s corner and Steve Austin would be in The Rock’s corner.

The synopsis for this episode on WWE Network is: “As Backlash approaches, Mr. McMahon reminds The Rock not to trust a rattlesnake. Shane McMahon issues a challenge to Chris Jericho.”

TJR Retro: WWF Smackdown 04/20/00 Review (Rock vs. Jericho, Triple H vs. Tazz)

I’m back for another WWF in 2000 review. The storylines were really heating up in April 2000 and the matches were starting to improve on television as well. Here’s the synopsis on WWE Network: “WWE Champion Triple H and Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley abuse their power going into Backlash. Plus, The Rock, Chris Jericho, and many more.”

TJR Retro: WWF Raw Deal 04/17/00 Review (Triple H vs. Jericho for WWF Title)

Hey yo. My name is John Canton and I’m a longtime internet wrestling writer. I’ve contributed to a lot of pretty big wrestling websites out there, but my main focus is on my own site TJRWrestling.net – the TJR part stands for “The John Report” because that’s the name I started using when I began writing on the internet way back in 1999. For the past ten years, I have committed to writing about wrestling full time with a major focus on current WWE stuff. My “WWE Raw Deal” reviews are what I’m most known for, but I’ve also written a lot of WWE history including reviews of most PPVs in WWE history. I have been reading my fellow Canadian Scott Keith’s reviews/columns about wrestling for at least 20 years (I guess we’re old!), if not longer. Recently, I reached out to Scott to ask if I can contribute to the Blog of Doom and he said yes. Thanks to Scott for giving me this opportunity. I really appreciate it.

The SmarK Rant for WWF Monday Night RAW–01.10.00

The SmarK Rant for WWF Monday Night RAW – 01.10.00

Hey, look at me, getting with the zeitgeist, as we watched Bird Box tonight (which will instantly date this rant for those reading years later!) and it was pretty good! Definitely not as scary as the internet would have us believe, and I don’t really get all the confusion over the ending and such. I’d liken it to the A Quiet Place, which was a much better movie with a similar clever concept, but it’s absolutely worth a watch. Not sure why 45 million people signed up for Netflix to watch it or whatever the crazy claim is, but it’s pretty good.

Anyway, back to 2000 again, because Bryan & Vinny are gonna catch up to me again if I don’t get going with these. To be fair, I’m also doing Smackdown and they’re not, so it’s twice the work for me.

The SmarK Rant for WWF Monday Night RAW – 01.03.00

OK, let’s kick off the greatest (and still most profitable!) year in WWF history as we hit THE YEAR 2000!

Actually, if we get far enough into this year, we bump into the time when I started doing RAW reviews for CBS Sportsline and other sites. Around March we get to the point when I was doing Smackdown. How old does THAT make you feel?

The SmarK 24/7 Rant for Monday Night RAW – March 22 1999

(Sorry, I was super-busy on Saturday night and didn’t have time to watch anything new for this morning.  However, here’s a historic episode of RAW from 1999 from the 24/7 archives to continue filling in those gaps.  But we’ll update as needed for fun!)

The SmarK Rant for WWF Monday Night RAW – 03.30.98

Someone e-mailed me yesterday specifically asking about this show, so I figured “What the hell”. That’s the beauty of the WWE Network! I can just call up random episodes of RAW and review them.

This is one of course quite notable for being one of the biggest “Post-WM RAW” shows of the Attitude Era, kicking off the Austin Era in particular.

The SmarK Rant for WCW Bash at the Beach 1997 – 07.13.97

OK, after a week off, it’s time to get back on the Attitude Era Trolley, Jackson! As usual, I remember almost nothing about this show, so it’s all new to me.

Live from Daytona Beach, FL, drawing a sellout 7851 and a disappointing buyrate of 0.78 (or about 150,000 buys). They really thought the Rodman thing would pop a big number for them, but it just didn’t. Rodman was paid $750,000 for the show, as well, which pretty much destroyed any profit from the show.
