Daily News Update – February 21, 2020

Hey, I won a 55″ Roku TV at my super-late work Christmas party last night!  That’s a pretty cool start to the weekend and end of my vacation.

Also, I’m gonna play around with scheduling stuff to post a little later again, around 7:00am CST instead of the 5:00 or so that I’ve been doing it.  I’ve had people comment that the daily threads and rants are a bit too early for them as I’ve been doing them, so we’ll see how a change does.

DATELINE:  All kinds of shows this weekend, with a UFC and Bellator and a couple of minor wrestling shows as well, such as the retirement show for Manabu Nakanishi.  Man, and he finally got his name in the 95 Observer Flashbacks, too.

DATELINE:  WWE stock rebounded a bit with news that they’re trying to make a deal for the big PPVs with ESPN.  Speaking from a personal standpoint, that would SUCK.  I do not want to go back to paying $60 for their shitty PPVs and I know I’m not alone.

Today we celebrate the glorious career of the Hall of Fame Bella Twins via a WWE Top 10 list.

Daily News Update – February 21, 2020

God help me if I ever have to sit through that Fingerpoke episode of Nitro again.

Hey, big news for non-US AEW fans here on the blog:  Fite.TV has kindly provided me with a free code for AEW Revolution on February 29 to give away to a lucky non-US reader, so I’m gonna come up with a contest and probably run it on Twitter.  I’m thinking “predict how many falls the Iron Man match goes and who wins them”.  Anyway, I’ll think something up and have details right away.  Sorry, I don’t have any connections with B/R Live so I can’t help you out there.

DATELINE:  Samoa Joe suffered another concussion while shooting a commercial, which makes his second one in four weeks.  I’m thinking that commentary gig might be looking better to him pretty soon.

DATELINE:  Dynamite bested NXT in the ratings battle again, with both shows being up over last week again.

DATELINE:  New Japan is still working on finding a new TV home in the USafter getting thrown off AXS by Impact.  Apparently they could have sued for breach of contract but chose not to for some reason.

And here’s a WWE Top 10 list of double champions that popped up on my recommended list for some reason.

Daily News Update – February 20, 2020

Oh dude, it’s 02/20/2020.  That’s a lot of 2s and 0s.

DATELINE:  AEW has action figures coming!  HELL YEAH.  I’m gonna need all of these in case anyone is looking for birthday ideas for me this summer.

DATELINE:  WWE is doing a documentary on FCW on the Network next month.  Now maybe they could, I dunno, put all the footage of the show on there as well?  Just a thought?

DATELINE:  AEW also has a podcast now, featuring Tony and Aubrey Edwards.  Come on, the video game deal can’t be far behind now!

Daily News Update – February 19, 2020

Man, you guys sure had some stuff to say about RUTHLESS AGGRESSION.

DATELINE:  On yesterday’s NWA show, the date and time of the Crockett Cup was revealed.  Spoiler, it’s in Atlanta.

DATELINE:  Col. Robert Parker is coming to MLW!

DATELINE:  Brock Lesnar will be working the next couple of RAW shows, including next week’s one in Winnipeg.

Hey dog, I hear you love Ruthless Aggression?  Well I got you ALL THE RUTHLESS AGGRESSION.

Daily News Update – February 17, 2020

Hey, yo.

Stuff I do for fun:  Digging through my basement full of random computer parts to refurbish a 10 year old Compaq laptop and install Linux on it.  Still more exciting than RAW.

DATELINE:  Shelton Benjamin has signed a new multi-year deal with WWE.  I feel like we’ve missed the peak with Shelton, but hey, he’s finally in WWE Champions and he’s a pretty good free character.

DATELINE:  WWE announced the participants in the Elimination Chamber, women’s edition.

And here’s this week’s Being the Elite to kick off your Tuesday!

Daily News Update – February 17, 2020

Weekend’s over and now I’m on vacation for February break!  Now, I’m not leaving town, but my wife is taking a trip to New York later this week, so I don’t know how the logistics of that are going to work as it relates to dead wrestlers.  Maybe just their wives will die?  I dunno, it’s not an exact science.

DATELINE:  Tito Ortiz has been training at the Performance Center lately.  I feel like it might be a bit late for him.

DATELINE:  Matt Hardy’s farewell angle on RAW turned out to be less farewell-y than planned, as it did a big rating and so Vince asked him back for a match with Orton on RAW later tonight.

DATELINE:  The Financial Times has a big story on AEW!  Probably about all the money they’re gonna lose, AMIRITE?

Daily News Update – February 16, 2020

Thanks to reader Derek Price, who sent me the sick scan of the Flair magazine cover to replace my ratty screencapped version.

It’s Takeover day!  Get hyped!

DATELINE:  Smackdown ratings were slightly down.  Now the truth over Wilson & Barrios’ firing comes out!

DATELINE:  Ronda Rousey is starting a gaming channel on Facebook Watch.  Is that still a thing?

DATELINE:  After winning the British Heavyweight title, Will Ospreay tweeted that he’s offically moving into the Heavyweight division.  Does that mean he’s also officially British now, too?  I mean, I’d always assumed…

Daily News Update – February 15, 2020

I feel like we might as well stay on-brand and just go with the “Daily News Update” thing every day now.

DATELINE:  Wrestlemania will feature AJ Styles v. Undertakeras one of the featured matches, and I’m not gonna lie, that sounds like a goddamned trainwreck waiting to happen.  AJ hasn’t exactly been great this past year and he’s rushing back from injury for this one.

DATELINE:  Will Ospreay won the rematch for the British Heavyweight title at Rev Pro’s show last night in what I’m assuming was a great match.

DATELINE:  AEW’s Double or Nothing II is shockingly not sold out yet.

And speaking of Vegas, here’s Asuka visiting an all you can eat buffet while staying there.

Daily News Update – February 14, 2020

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Observer’s out, here’s some tidbits.

DATELINE:  WWE is once again looking into adding a bunch of indie promotions to the Network, as they’re currently sniffing around to see about acquiring some of the tape libraries that are out there.  How this relates to their long-standing plan to add a “tiered” version of the Network, we dunno.

DATELINE:  Ted Dibiase has been a very bad Christian, apparently taking in millions of dollars for his ministry that were intended for the welfare recipients in MS.  It’s not known how involved Ted himself is, although his son was arrested recently over what is suspected to be this case.  However, I have heard that everyone has a price.

DATELINE:  Jeff Cobb has not actually signed a contract with AEW, although Cody offered him one.

And for your free match of the day, we’ve got a doozy.  Becky Lynch takes on a CAN OPENER.  Have a great day.

Daily News Update – February 13, 2020

Hope everyone had a happy Wednesday War and comments didn’t get too heated.  You know how I hate controversy.

Random story:  My wife was looking around at Value Village last night (Canadian thrift store chain, like Goodwill) and I found a metric buttload of TNA DVD releases from 2005-2007, like at least two dozen PPVs, and then about a dozen EliteXC DVD releases on another shelf.  As in the MMA promotion featuring Kimbo Slice.  Just a mind-blowingly weird discovery and I have to wonder who took the time to accumulate that collection in the first place and then how they all ended up donated.

DATELINE:  ROH is doing a tournament to crown a new Women’s champion.  Just…why?  They have Velvet Sky and about 2 other people.  Let it go.

DATELINE:  Double or Nothing tickets go on sale this morning if you’re looking for them.

Daily News Update – February 12, 2020

Congratulations to all the winners of the Doomie Awards for 2019.  Hopefully Night’s acceptance speech will be wrapping up sometime this morning.

I was not feeling so hot last night, so Powerrr is gonna have to wait until later.

To the news!

DATELINE:  John Cena returns to Smackdown in two weeks.  They’re in Boston so he’s probably doing something to promote F9.

DATELINE:  Matt Hardy posted a goodbye tweet after RAW.  And then Evil Uno posted an apparently unrelated tweet that said “You say goodbye, and we say hello.”  Hmmmmmm.

DATELINE:  The participants for the Smackdown version of the Elimination Chamber match have been leaked.  Basicall who you’d expect.  On Observer Radio, Meltzer said that regardless of the last minute addition of the Goldberg-Fiend match to the Saudi show, the plan is still Roman-Fiend at Wrestlemania and always has been.

And here is AEW Dark for y’all in case you didn’t watch it last night.

Daily News Update – February 11, 2020

Hey, 15 in a row for the Raptors.  Not too shabby.

DATELINE:  Brandi Rhodes put the final nail in the coffin of the Nightmare Collective, saying that things went a lot differently than she had planned.  That’s an understatement.

DATELINE:  The Tuwaiq Trophy is the latest bullshit “title” set for Super Showdown this month, with 6 geeks in a gauntlet match.  They’re really doing the hard sell for this one.

DATELINE:  Rock’s daughter Simone joined the WWE Performance Center.  The Pebble?

Hey, here’s Edge v. Eddie in a ladder match to start your day.

Daily News Update – February 10, 2020

Whoa, Parasite.  Not gonna lie, I was 100% Team Tarantino for this year’s nominees, but at least the movie got a couple of awards.

Thank god someone finally used their acceptance speech to speak up for the plight of the bovine nation.

Also, I don’t know if Brian wants to take these over again post-concussion or what, but I’m usually up at 5AM for work these days anyway and I know you all love my snarky humor first thing in the morning.

To the news!

DATELINE:  The XFL did 3.3 million viewers for the debut on ABC.  It’s a good-ish number, but of course the real test will be what it looks like by four or five weeks in.

DATELINE:  New Japan will be returning to MSG with “Wrestle Dynasty” in August.  Um, but how are they gonna draw a crowd without Matt Taven and ROH to prop them up?

And here’s a WWE show about the best wrestling weddings, given the proximity of Valentine’s Day…

The Cheap and Lazy Sunday Thread – Febuary 8, 2020

The XFL is back!  I don’t feel like many people were ready for some more football.  But whatever, it’s Vince’s money.

DATELINE:  Smackdown had better ratings this week, although they’re basically the same audience every week.

DATELINE;  Chris Jericho is teasing that EC3 might be coming into AEW.  Hey, if they could rehab Jake Hager, anything is possible.

Daily News Update – February 7, 2020

Well, we made it to Friday, and there’s a new Observer out last night!  Let’s see what’s in the news…

DATELINE:  The secret streaming service apparently bidding for Wrestlemania is Peacock, which launches on 4/15 and will carry a $9.99 price tag.  The idea being that all the PPVs move to that service and the WWE Network moves towards the Fight Pass model of the old WWE content plus hosting other indie promotions like Evolve and WXW.

DATELINE:  New Japan is looking at a return to MSG in the summer, assuming that Vince doesn’t try to get it shut down again.  However, regardless of whether they can strike a deal with AEW for talent exchanges, it wouldn’t appear likely for Tony Khan to allow AEW guys to work that show.

DATELINE:  With Awesome Kong off to film GLOW again, AEW taped a segment for YouTube where Brandi Rhodes goes to a psychiatrist and is cured of her evil side.  So the Nightmare Collective is offically done.

And here’s Brock Lesnar squashing Hulk Hogan to kick off your day!

Daily News Update – February 6, 2020

It’s EARNINGS CALL DAY for WWE.  This should be an interesting one.

DATELINE:  WWE stock opened up at $49 this morning ahead of the call and has rebounded slightly from the disaster following the Barrios/Wilson firings.

DATELINE:  Conor McGregor should probably list himself on the stock market, because UFC 246 became the first streaming PPV to do one million buys according to ESPN.

DATELINE:  WWE has abandoned the trademark to EC3 because EC3 already registered it for himself.  I’m thinking he’s not sticking around much longer.  Just a hunch.

Daily News Update – February 5, 2020

Four days until the launch of the XFL 2.0!  Hope you’ve got your calendars marked appropriately!

DATELINE:  Timothy Thatcher is the latest indy guy to be stockpiled into the WWE system now.  Hope he’s making good money from it.

DATELINE:  While the WWE Network is struggling, Disney Plus already has an astonishing 28.9 million subscribers worldwide.  Not wrestling related news but I mean, holy shit, right?

And although I’m not reviewing it this morning, here’s AEW Dark for you.

Daily News Update – February 4, 2020

All kinds of stuff coming out of RAW last night as they build to SUPER DUPER SAUDI SHOWDOWN III at the end of the month.

DATELINE:  Brock Lesnar defends against Ricochet in the main event of the show, which should be awesome because Brock’s best stuff is when he’s got a little guy to hurl around the ring and then pin.

DATELINE:  Ruby Riott is back, so that one guy who e-mailed me about her that one time should be happy.

DATELINE:  Charlotte will be facing Rhea Ripley at Wrestlemania.  I bet Bayley is so upset at being overshadowed that she’s gonna SPEAK TO YOUR MANAGER about it.

Meanwhere, here’s some AEW.

Daily News Update – February 3, 2020

Oh my god aren’t you all thankful that the pre-season level nonsense of the “NO FUN League” is done with and now we can get to some REAL football?  Because it’s almost time for the XFL!

DATELINE:  The Kansas City Chiefs won their first BLAH BLAH BLAH god I can’t even finish typing that sentence because I’m still so BORED from the whole “football” season.  Why can’t someone bring back real football the way it was meant to be played, which is so very important to me as an 18-49 year old white male who likes sports?  Well, some sports.  Mostly hockey.

DATELINE:  Minoru Suzuki will be facing Orange Cassidy at Joey Janela’s Spring Break show in April.  THIS IS A REAL THING THAT’S HAPPENING.  THIS IS NOT A DRILL.

DATELINE:  Dio Madden is apparently a wrestler again.  I honestly didn’t know he was a wrestler in the first place or where he came from before being a terrible announcer.  So we’ve all learned something today.

Let’s all celebrate HHH this morning with WWE’s Top 10 Returns from Injury, shall we?

The Cheap and Lazy SUPER BOWL SUNDAY Thread!

Who’s ready for some FOOTBALL?  Although we here at the Blog of Doom do not normally care about the sport or endorse specific teams, there is one team that I do take a rooting interest in.

DATELINE:  MLW and Dragon Gate now have a working relationship.  Really, the more of these smaller groups that can band together, the better it is for everyone.

DATELINE:  Tegan Nox will now face Dakota Kai in a street fight at Takeover Portland.  Goddamn that show is gonna be a banger, innit?

DATELINE:  The Guerrillas of Destiny regained the IWGP tag team titles on New Japan’s USA tour.   Not a very auspicious tag title reign for Juice, sadly.

And if you want something to watch today, Impact has posted the first ever TNA PPV to YouTube.  Midget garbage wrestling and all.  I might actually bookmark that one and redo it on Monday, actually.
