Freakshow fights are drawing very well this year.
So far we’ve had:
Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr (both in their 50s)
Jake Paul vs. Nate Robinson
Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren
Logan Paul vs. Floyd Mayweather
Next up we are looking at Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley and Tyson / Holyfield 3. In recent years we’ve also had McGregor vs. Mayweather and CM Punk’s fights in the UFC.
Ali/Inoki is the biggest example I can think of that was done by wrestling promoters.
Do you think this trend will sustain? It is mostly Gen Z who are buying the PPVs since they feature their favorite YouTube stars.
Also, I heard that in 2002, WWE tried to make a shoot fight between Brock Lesnar and then heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis happen. Do you recall this?
It’s a weird trend. I had real people asking me about the Mayweather fight in my real life as well. But you know what, the market will support what it supports and if people stop wanting this nonsense, it’ll die off. Good on the Paul’s for cashing in I guess.
