WWF Wrestling Challenge – May 14th, 1995

May 14, 1995

From the Mark of the Quad in Moline, IL

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Jim Ross

The show starts off on a video package of the Bret Hart/Jerry Lawler feud that began at the 1993 King of the Ring to hype their match at In Your House.

Hakushi w/ Shinja vs. Sonny Rogers

The announcers hype the Diesel vs. Sid World Title match as Gorilla claims the “entire world is buzzing about the matchup.” Ross breaks the news that Bret vs. Hakushi will be the first match on the PPV. Hakushi works the arm as Ross believes that Bret made a mistake taking on two matches at In Your House. Rogers gets a “USA” chant started but Hakushi kicks him in the face. Hakushi gets whipped into the corner but hits Rogers with a throat thrust. Hakushi beats on Rogers as the announcers hype him up as a dangerous weapon due to his martial arts and aerial skills. Hakushi taunts the crowd then goes back on offense before hitting a springboard splash for the win (2:44).

Thoughts: Solid win for Hakushi as the announcers played him up as a threat against Bret for tonight’s PPV match.

Adam Bomb vs. Black Phantom

The announcers hype up the Superstar Line then talk about Bomb’s King of the Ring Tournament qualifier against Mabel at In Your House. Bomb works the arm to start. Bomb catches Phantom with a powerslam then applies a chin lock as the announcers now talk about Bomb going into a size disadvantage at the PPV. Bomb tosses Phantom in the corner and kicks away. Bomb catches Phantom with a side slam then brushes off some punches and lands a few clotheslines. Bomb then hits a back suplex as Phantom rolls outside so Bomb heads out and rolls him back in and uses a slingshot clothesline for the win (3:00). Ross says that Bomb has a great future ahead of him. Bomb then tosses out the bombs to the crowd.

Thoughts: A win to give Bomb momentum heading into his King of the Ring qualifier against Mabel on the PPV.

WWF Live Event News with Stephanie Wiand. We learn that Razor Ramon vs. The Roadie will take place at the 6/11 Meadowlands show.

Jean Pierre LaFitte vs. Butler Stevens

The announcers talk about the final Boston Garden show as Stevens avoids LaFitte. Stevens gets booted in the face then LaFitte stomps away. Stevens kicks LaFitte and comes off of the top but gets caught and hit with a belly-to-belly suplex. LaFitte then heads up top and hits a flying leg drop and the announcers talk about Razor Ramon facing Jeff Jarrett & The Roadie at In Your House. LaFitte ties Stevens in the ropes and beats him down. LaFitte then hits a DDT and stands on his chest and signals its over before going up top for the Cannonball and the win (2:38).

Thoughts: The announcers talked about some of the PPV matches as LaFitte, who defeated Bob Holly in a dark match, continues to get squash match wins until they find something for him to do.

The Bodydonnas vignette airs.

Bob “Spark Plugg” Holly vs. Barry Horowitz

Ross says that Horowitz is “underrated.” Horowitz mouths off to Holly and gets taken down. Horowitz retreats to the corner as we learn that Holly will face Mantaur in a King of the Ring qualifier this Monday night on RAW. The announcers also talk about Bob Backlund’s announcement for RAW then go back to the King of the Ring tournament. Horowitz rams Holly into the corner and hammers away but Holly catches him with a dropkick then covers for the win (1:42).

Thoughts: We now know that Holly vs. Mantaur will take place on RAW as another King of the Ring Qualifier so expect more of those matches across TV the next few weeks.

We now get a video package on Bertha Faye. Ross says we will see Faye vs. Alundra Blayze in a few weeks.

Henry Godwinn vs. Gary Scott

Ross puts over Godwinn’s effort against Diesel on “Superstars” then his potential allegiance with Ted DiBiase. Gorilla does not believe that Godwinn softened up Diesel enough for Sid at in Your House as Scott kicks away. Godwinn comes back with a clothesline then suplexes Scott on the ropes. Godwinn hits a wheelbarrow slam as the announcers talk about Diesel’s focus heading into the PPV. Ross says that Bam Bam Bigelow has aligned with Diesel and knows what goes on with The Corporation and will can help. Godwinn stays in control then hits the Slop Drop for the win (1:58).

Thoughts: They are continuing the tease of a relationship between Godwinn and DiBiase. The announcers also talked up Bigelow & Diesel forming an alliance.

Up next, an interview with Diesel.

Raymond Rougeau welcomes Diesel to the ring. Diesel talks about Sid’s size, strength, speed, and the fact he is mentally unstable which makes him his toughest opponent. The camera zooms in on Diesel’s title belt and how it means everything to him after growing up in Detroit. He talks about the belt allowing him to meet a lot of people and friends globally and even in this very building. He now talks about Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon being his friends and how they compete against each other they make harsh judgments on people and has done this with Bigelow. Diesel said he thought Bigelow was a problem for getting in Lawrence Taylor but now is a friend. Diesel talks about doing anything for his friends. He then talks about Sid attacking his friends but we now see Sid & DiBiase head down the aisle with a few referees standing in their way. Diesel then challenges Sid and first turns his back to him because that’s how Sid likes to attack.Sid is shown laughing and blinking as Diesel then tells Sid he will be in Sid’s face at In Your House and when the night is done, Sid will be able to say he was in the ring with a “stark, raving, mad, lunatic” and not just the champ. This face Diesel character is just not privy to good interviews but the confrontation was something to hype up the title match. The stuff about his friends could also be seen as shoot comments too but this was all a segment to build more heat for Diesel/Sid.

Owen Hart & Yokozuna vs. Kevin Kruger & Gary Anderson

The announcers talk about Hakushi & Shinja flying to Calgary to scout Bret Hart. Yokozuna beats down Anderson as the hosts talk about the Tag Team Title match at In Your House. The Gunns are shown in an insert promo and say the element of surprise is gone and they are going to reclaim the belts. Ross says Yokozuna outweighs both of the Gunns combined. The champs beat on Kruger for a bit but Kruger comes back with a hip toss on Owen. Anderson tags and tries to work the arm but Owen catches him with a drop toe hold then kicks away. Owen drops Anderson with an enziguiri then a standing dropkick. Kruger is back in and Owen rams his face into the turnbuckle. Kruger fights back but is hit with a spinebuster then Yokozuna uses a leg drop and after that Owen puts on the Sharpshooter for the win (3:20).

Thoughts: Some more hype for the Tag Team Title match at In Your House.

Another Live Event News segment with Stephanie Wiand.

The announcers give us last minute In Your House hype.

Final Thoughts: They had a Diesel interview and confrontation with Sid as a way to try for last-minute PPV buys. Other than that it was your standard edition of Challenge with squash match and recycled clips.

Later on tonight will be my recap of the 5/14 “Action Zone” with Allied Powers vs. Men on a Mission as the featured bout.
