WWF Wrestling Challenge – April 9th, 1995

April 9, 1995

From the Lowell Memorial Auditorium in Lowell, MA

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Ted DiBiase

This week we get a featured match of Eli Blu vs. Fatu

Hakushi w/ Shinja vs. Tony Roy

We are shown a clip of Hakushi attacking Bret Hart during his award presentation. Also, we get different lettering for the name graphics. Hakushi sends Roy into the corner with some throat thrusts as DiBiase says Bret deserved what happened to him two weeks ago. Hakushi uses a Vader Bomb then taunts the crowd as Gorilla puts over his attributes. Roy uses a few pinfall attempts but Hakushi stomps away then lands chops in the corner. Hakushi stays in control and drills Roy with a thrust kick and soon after that uses a diving headbutt for the win (2:28).

Thoughts: A quick win for Hakushi as the announcers strongly put over his talent to build him up against Bret Hart.

WrestleMania Report with Jim Ross.

Doink the Clown w/ Dink vs. Duane Gill

Gill takes Doink down with a hip toss and mocks his dancing. The announcers talk about what Sid did to Shawn Michaels as DiBiase takes offense to Gorilla referring to Sid as “psycho” and says that Shawn deserves what happened. Doink takes control with an armbar as Gorilla says it takes a coward to attack from behind. Doink hits a tilt-a-whirl slam and says you cannot deny Shawn’s heart and abilities. The announcers continue to talk about Shawn as Doink mocks Gill and stays in control until using the stump puller for the win (2:27).

Thoughts: Just a backdrop for the announcers to talk about what happened to Shawn Michaels on RAW. Doink did bring back the stump puller but this gimmick is now toast.

We are shown what happened on RAW between Diesel, Shawn Michaels, and Psycho Sid.

The house we can win as part of the “In Your House” PPV giveaway is shown. DiBiase says whoever wins the house will ruin the neighborhood property value.

Henry Godwinn vs. Steve King

The announcers then talk about UCLA beating Arkansas in the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament as Godwinn beats down King. Godwinn continues to rough up King and hits a wheelbarrow slam for the win (1:39). Gorilla says that Godwinn just needs some guidance as DiBiase suggests he might need some “corporate” guidance.

Thoughts: A quick win for Godwinn, who has already lost a few times on TV and remains without any sort of direction.

Ross is back with another WrestleMania Report. We learn the results of Bob Backlund vs. Bret Hart and Undertaker vs. King Kong Bundy.

The Smoking Gunns are backstage hyping themselves up for their match.

Smoking Gunns vs. Mike Bell & Tony DeVito

DiBiase laughs about the Gunns recent troubles. The Gunns work over Bell to start as DiBiase congratulates MoM for ridding themselves of the “dead weigh” in Oscar. DeVito tags and ducks his head and gets take down with a rocker dropper of sorts by Billy. The announcers talk about the Gunns/MoM feud as the Gunns stay in control of this match. We now hear the announcers talk about the Women’s Title match on RAW and how we will see what happened later on in this show. The Gunns work the arm of DeVito until they hit the Sidewinder for the win (3:10). Gorilla proclaims that the Gunns are back on the winning track.

Thoughts: Hype for the Gunns/MoM feud as they apparently dropped the story of Billy needing to miss a couple of weeks after Yokozuna hit him with the Bonzai Drop at WrestleMania.

We see Alundra Blayze defeat Bull Nakano for the Women’s Title on RAW and the attack by the now named Bertha Faye, who broke Alundra’s nose. DiBiase lets us know that Faye is “romantically linked” to Harvey Whippleman.

The Fan Festival Minute piece we saw on “Superstars” airs.

King Kong Bundy w/ Ted DiBiase vs. Leroy Howard

Gorilla is now solo on commentary. He talks about Kama stealing the urn at WrestleMania. Bundy beats down Howard as Gorilla says that Shawn Michaels has a “lower lumbar injury” and is return date is unknown. Bundy clotheslines Howard as Gorilla talks about Bam Bam Bigelow embarrassing The Corporation at WrestleMania and how DiBiase will deal with that as Bundy hits an avalanche for the win (1:43).

Thoughts: After the Bundy/Undertaker stinker at WrestleMania we now see the feud shifted to Undertaker/Kama.

An ad for the WrestleMania Encore Plus airing. We also hear from rambling nonsense from Roddy Piper to plug this as well.

Eli Blu w/ Uncle Zebekiah vs. Fatu w/ Capt. Lou Albano & Afa

The first featured match on Challenge since 7/31/94 when we saw Yokozuna & Crush vs. Mabel & Typhoon. DiBiase is back on commentary. Eli attacks Fatu before the bell but tries a turnbuckle smash and gets attacked after some dancing by Fatu. We see Fatu hit a backbreaker for a two count but then eats boot on a charge. Eli hits a knee drop then targets the back as the announcers talk about the Tag Team Division, particularly the newly formed Allied Powers. Eli hits a side slam for a two count as Gorilla asks DiBiase about Bigelow’s status in The Corporation. DiBiase said he was embarrassed over Bigelow’s performance but cannot turn away from someone as talented as Bigelow. Eli misses a splash from the middle rope as DiBiase says he will try to work things out as Bigelow. Fatu now fights back and drops Eli with a clothesline. Eli tries a mat slam but Fatu pops up and dances before hitting a thrust kick. Fatu clotheslines Eli over the top rope then Zebekiah distracts everyone on the apron, allowing Jacob to run down. Jacob clotheslines Fatu as no one is aware he switched with Eli. Jacob ties Fatu in the ropes and hits a few big boots. Fatu gets tossed over the ropes with his neck stuck between the ropes now Sionne runs down and attacks Jacob for the DQ (4:04) *. Sionne pummels away on Jacob as the ref helps Fatu from the ropes. Eli finally comes back in but Sionne hits a big boot then goes up top but Zebekiah takes Eli out to safety. Sionne checks on his partner as Afa explains what happened to the referee.

Thoughts: Not great but the fans for once actually reacted to Sionne after he came in to clean house. And Fatu, who has been struggling to adapt to footwear now has mastered it to the point he can dance after being hit in the head. This feud will continue though and given the state of the tag division its good enough even if the Blu’s have been less than impressive.

The celebrities involved at WrestleMania XI tell us about the great time he had.

DiBiase talks about at least getting the urn at WrestleMania and how Kama turned it into a gold necklace.

Highlights of what happened during the Eli vs. Fatu match. The announcers cannot wait to see these teams face off again.

Next week in action are Men on a Mission, Jeff Jarrett, and more on the condition of Alundra Blayze and Shawn Michaels. Plus, Bob Backlund will be joining us from Spring Break. Once again, DiBiase takes offense to Gorilla calling Sid a “psycho.”

Final Thoughts: We actually had a featured match here and they are continuing the Headshrinkers/Blu’s as a feud. And if you missed the rest of this week’s show we saw the rest of the WrestleMania fallout plus the plug for the encore airing.
