WWF Challenge – September 4th, 1994

September 4, 1994

From the Lowell Auditorium in Lowell, MA

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon (replacing Jim Ross) and Ted DiBiase. Also, we finally get a new opening montage.

We have Todd Pettengill narrating a still photo package on The Undertaker vs. Undertaker match at SummerSlam. He believes we will only see one Undertaker for now on and that is Paul Bearer’s.

The hosts talk now as DiBiase thought he had The Undertaker and says if he can’t buy it then he doesnt want it but does gloat over signing Tatanka. The burying of the other Undertaker continues.

Yokozuna vs. Tom O’Sullivan

The crowd starts up a USA chant as the announcers talk about the Undertaker/Yokozuna feud. Yokozuna beats on O’Sullivan with ease then applies a claw. DiBiase still does not want to talk about The Undertaker and still says he is confused about the whole deal as Yokozuna hits a leg drop for the win (2:15). After the match, we hear the Undertaker’s gong and the lights are out as Yokozuna is frightened.

Thoughts: At this point in the show they could have not made it any clearer that the second Undertaker is done forever and the real Undertaker is resuming his feud against Yokozuna. Also, the absence of Cornette & Fuji is not really explained much here other than Gorilla speculating they are also afraid of Undertaker too.

The Bret Hart WWF New Generation ad airs.

Duke “The Dumpster” Droese vs. Barry Hardy

Gorilla hypes the PPV encore airing of SummerSlam before getting in another dig at DiBiase over not having the real Undertaker. Droese beats on Hardy as the announcers talk about some of the title matches at SummerSlam and what happened at the end of the cage match with the rest of the Hart Family getting involved in the match. Droese applies a chin lock as the announcers put over the cage match as the best in history then Droese uses the Trash Compactor for the win (2:06).

Thoughts: Really just a back drop to put over the encore airing of SummerSlam with a lot of hype about the Bret vs. Owen cage match.

Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart w/ Owen Hart vs. Richie Rich

Neidhart chokes out Rich in the corner then takes him down with a clothesline. The announcers talk about Neidhart & Owen locking Bret inside of the cage after SummerSlam as Neidhart uses a Cobra Clutch. Gorilla lists off all of Bret’s recent title defenses as Rich gets tossed outside. Owen slaps Rich then rolls him back inside where Neidhart hammers away. Neidhart then uses a back drop then uses the Camel’s Clutch for the win (2:41). After the match, Neidhart puts the hold on as Owen snaps his glasses off of Rich’s face a few times then yells how he is nothing, just like Bret.

Thoughts: They are setting up Neidhart as Bret’s next challenger.

An ad hyping the PPV Encore airing of SummerSlam.

The Headshrinkers w/ Afa & Capt. Lou Albano vs. Todd Mata & Nick Barberry

Barberry fires away until he hurts himself trying a headbutt. The Headshrinkers beat him down as DiBiase talks about his team beating The Headshrinkers at SummerSlam as Gorilla says the Headshrinkers are upset over losing the titles and will get another crack at the belts. DiBiase says that IRS & Bigelow are better suited for singles competition to put the end to that team as Mata is now in getting destroyed. The Headshrinkers use a double face buster then Fatu hits the top rope splash for the win (2:34).

Thoughts: They set up Headshrinkers as getting a rematch while learning Bigelow & IRS are done as a team.

Jeff Jarrett vs. Tony Roy

Before the match, Jarrett spells out his name and calls himself the world’s greatest singer, entertainer, and wrestler. Roy takes over Jarrett as Gorilla says Jarrett wants gold around his waist even if his daddy has to buy it for him. A rare great line by Gorilla in this era.  Roy fights back but whiffs on a dropkick then Jarrett hits a back elbow smash. Gorilla asks DiBiase about buying Jarrett and talks about how he fooled everyone by acquiring Tatanka. Jarrett calls out Razor Ramon as Gorilla says once again that Jarrett wants gold. Gorilla keeps making jokes about how cheap it was to buy off Tatanka as Jarrett softens up the leg then uses the figure-four and gets the win (2:55).

Thoughts: With Jarrett specifically calling out Razor it appears that will be a program going forward.

Still photo package on Luger/Tatanka from SummerSlam.

Well Dunn w/ Harvey Whippleman vs. Steve King & Mark Malaccio

Gorilla tells us we can never question Luger’s integrity again as DiBiase said he never wanted Luger in the first place as Gorilla goes on about Tatanka. DiBiase jokes that Tatanka can open up his own casino now as we see Abe “Knuckleball” Schwartz on strike in the front row. Well Dunn work over Malaccio as Gorilla hypes the SummerSlam replay. King tags in and works the arm of Dunn briefly until he ducks his head and gets hit with a back suplex. Whippleman tells us that Well Dunn is the #1 team in the WWF as Gorilla yells “shut up” while DiBiase even says they have a long way to go before being the #1 team. Well Dunn beat the crap out of King as DiBiase calls out Luger for being a “sucker” then Well Dunn uses an Irish whip into a hotshot for the win (2:53).

Thoughts: Well Dunn are just lower card fodder. Even the announcers took a shot at their standing in the company.

Another ad to hype the SummerSlam Encore PPV airing.

Doink the Clown w/ Dink vs. Iron Mike Sharpe

Dink squirts water at Sharpe then Doink takes control early. Sharpe fights back and uses clubbing forearms and other generic strikes. Doink comes back with a crossbody for a two count then grabs a front face lock. DiBiase gloats about getting Tatanka despite not everything going as planned. Doink ties up Sharpe in the ropes then hits a suplex for two. Doink now uses a chin lock as DiBiase talks about Doink not being worth buying then Doink puts Sharpe away with the Whoopie Cushion (2:47). DiBiase then laughs after saying he could buy Dink for half-price.

Thoughts: This was a backdrop for the announcers to discuss Tatanka selling out to DiBiase.

Another Live Event News segment on the Hart Attack Tour.

The hosts once again plug the SummerSlam encore airing.

In action next week are Mabel, IRS, and Owen Hart. Plus, comments from the British Bulldog and more!

Final Thoughts: Much like Superstars, we had the SummerSlam fallout on this show. Plus, we saw Gorilla Monsoon replace Jim Ross as the lead announcer. And the reason was Ross and the company could not come to terms on a new contract. Ross wanted to still keep his sports radio job and there was even some talk that some of Ross’s comments in a “Torch Talk” interview with Wade Keller upset the company. That interview was released when Ross was back in WWF but took place prior to him re-signing. Anyway, we will be building to the next PPV, Survivor Series, soon enough.
