WWF Superstars – January 15th, 1994

January 15, 1994

From the Lowell Auditorium in Lowell, MA

Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Stan Lane

Lex Luger vs. Bastion Booger

Booger taunts the crowd after shoving Luger then catches Luger in a powerslam for a two count. Booger then gets a two count with a leg drop before hammering away in the corner. Luger is then able to avoid an avalanche and tries for a slam after a few clotheslines but fails. Booger targets Luger’s back then hits a splash for a nearfall but misses a second attempt. Luger fights back but tries another slam and this time Booger falls on top for a two count. Booger sends Luger through the ropes with a clothesline as Lane believes Luger has overlooked Booger. Luger, however, pumps up after he is hit with an avalanche against the post and sends Booger down. Luger rolls Booger back inside and hits a slam before the running forearm smash gets the win (3:50) *. Vince then talks about Luger “building momentum” heading into the Rumble as Luger is seen waving the American flag in the ring.

Thoughts: Nothing more than a basic match as they now are giving Luger a lot of TV matches prior to the PPV, which is new since he rarely appeared on TV at all since slamming Yokozuna on July 4th.

The announcers talk about the Tag Team Titles changing hands on “Monday Night RAW.”

WWF Update with Gorilla Monsoon. We see that Marty Jannetty & 1-2-3 Kid are the new Tag Team Champions. We then hear from Bret & Owen Hart as Bret congratulates the new champs but Owen is down because they are not getting a title shot at the Rumble. Bret then calls Marty & Kid “jam up” and that they will give them a title shot after they beat The Quebecers before saying he is done as a singles wrestler once he finishes his contractual obligations as he is now going to tag with Owen. And even that does not appear to make Owen happy. Gorilla then says he feels for Owen before putting over Bret’s announcement. After that, they plug the Quebecers getting a return match this Monday night at Madison Square Garden as we hear from those involved in the title matches. So its obvious something is going to happen in the MSG Tag Team Title match for the company to mention it on TV outside of the Face-to-Face segments.

The Headshrinkers w/ Afa vs. JS Storm & Tony DeVito

Vince puts over Bret for his news while Lane points out how Owen was disappointed. Storm gets in a few moves on Samu until he is beaten down. We see yet another insert promo with The Headshrinkers as they headbutt each other and talk in their native tongue about the Rumble. The Headshrinkers now beat on DeVito until Samu uses a flying splash for the win (2:01). Vince then plugs the Royal Rumble Hotline and the Royal Rumble number drawing on “WWF Mania.”

Thoughts: The announcers talked about what we saw on the Update segment and plugged the Rumble Hotline number and how the drawing would occur on Mania. Unfortunately, I could not track down a copy of that show.

This week’s honorary ring announcer is Nicole Froton. She is sporting a Razor Ramon shirt and screams the announcements.

Tatanka vs. Barry Horowitz

The announcers talk about Tatanka vs. Ludvig Borga at the Royal Rumble and how they are both in the Rumble match. Tatanka takes down Horowitz after a flurry of offense then we hear from Borga in an insert promo telling Tatanka he will destroy him for good. Horowitz catches Tatanka with a back elbow smash then uses a leg drop for two. Tatanka fires up after getting hit with a turnbuckle splash and soon after that uses a Samoan drop for the win (2:29).

Thoughts: More hype for Borga vs. Tatanka in a match that never ended up taking place.

Jim Ross is in the Face-to-Face studio and with Yokozuna, Jim Cornette, and Mr. Fuji. He then introduces them to a video inside of The Undertaker’s workshop as we see the unveiling of the special casket. Bearer says that Yokozuna does not have to kick the tires for a ride, he just has to kick the bucket. We peak inside then it shuts as Undertaker tells Yokozuna will only hear the “hounds of hell” begging for his soul. We then see Yokozuna & his management as Cornette finally admits that Yokozuna is afraid of the “box” not the Undertaker then blames Bearer & Tunney for a con job then gets pissed and warns Undertaker that Yokozuna is backed into the corner and will unleash on everyone and promises a funeral for The Undertaker. Solid hype for the casket match I thought with the story now being Yokozuna’s casket fears confirmed by Cornette but also how he will take that fear and use it to destroy the Undertaker.

Virgil vs. Derek Domino

Vince talks about the Rumble Hotline as Virgil works over the arm of Domino. Virgil stays in control then uses a Million Dollar Dream for the win (1:33).

Thoughts: They trotted out Virgil for a quick win so they could plug the hotline.

We now see Raymond Rougeau in the locker room with Shawn Michaels & Diesel. Shawn is asked about the Rumble match and says he will win then gets interrupted by Bam Bam Bigelow, who says he will win. This leads to several other heels coming out to say they will win and ends with Diesel refusing to oblige to Shawn’s plan of letting him win after they are the last two left in the match. A quick segment to play into the every man for himself aspect in the Rumble match.

Royal Rumble Report with Todd Pettengill airs.

Tony Roy vs. IRS

IRS tells the crowd that 1994 is going to be the year of the audit. IRS works the arm then hits a slam. IRS yells at the crowd after an elbow drop but Roy comes back with a crossbody for a two count. We hear from Razor Ramon in an insert promo telling IRS he will take back his gold at the Rumble. IRS stays in control then hits the Write Off clothesline for the win (1:15).

Thoughts: More hype for Razor vs. IRS at the Rumble.

Next week in action are Ludvig Borga, Doink the Clown, Shawn Michaels and the featured match of Smoking Gunns vs. Adam Bomb & Rick Martel

The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer vs. Duane Gill

Vince says he cannot imagine how Yokozuna’s management would allow him to get into this type of match. Undertaker beats on Gill then catches him with a chokeslam for the win (0:56). After the match, Gill is stuffed inside of a bodybag.

Thoughts: Quick win for The Undertaker as they show him shove Gill inside of a body bag as to show what could happen to Yokozuna at the Rumble if he gets shoved into the casket. And they also continued the story of Cornette being blamed for this being a casket match to begin with to set up conflict if Undertaker does become victorious.

Final Thoughts: The big news here was the advancement of the Bret and Owen storyline. They hyped up the rest of the PPV too as that is now just one week away.
