From the Augusta Civic Center in Augusta, ME
Your hosts are Jim Ross and Gorilla Monsoon
This week in action are The Undertaker, Tatanka, The Headshrinkers, Crush, Marty Jannetty & 1-2-3 Kid, and Ludvig Borga
Ludvig Borga vs. JS Storm
Storm avoids the initial attack but ends up getting clotheslined. Storm avoids an elbow drop and lands a dropkick but is then caught in a powerslam as the announcers talk about Borga having problems with Luger but he is now focused on Tatanka at the Royal Rumble. Tatanka is shown in an insert promo cutting a much better promo than we heard on “Superstars” as he promises to inflict pain on Borga then Borga uses a torture rack for the win (2:00).
Thoughts: More hype for the Tatanak vs. Borga match at the Rumble.
WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. We hear Lord Alfred upset over the “teacher’s pet” Lex Luger using nefarious means to win his matches as we see what happened on “Superstars” where Luger laid out The Quebecers & Johnny Polo with the loaded forearm. We then hear from President Tunney as he said after great deliberation, Luger is granted a spot into the Rumble match as well as Fuji’s representatives Tenryu & Great Kabuki. Lord Alfred says “Dear old Jack” has been duped again then we hear from Luger saying how he is grateful for this opportunity and thanks the fans for their support. Luger then does not care about the mercenaries brought in by Fuji as a compromise as he is just focused on winning. What a dopey promo from Luger. They’re still trying to push him hard but its been downhill since SummerSlam.
Duane Gill & Tommy Manson vs. Marty Jannetty & 1-2-3 Kid
This is the first TV appearance of the Marty & Kid team. They also come out to Kid’s music. Marty works over Gill to start as the announcers talk about the title match on RAW this coming Monday. We then hear from Marty & Kid in an insert promo as they talk about their title shot and how The Quebecers are taking them lightly as they work over Manson then put him away with a top rope powerbomb (2:38).
Thoughts: An easy win for Marty & Kid as they get them on TV here in order to hype the title match this coming Monday on RAW.
Clip of this past weekend where he saw Yokozuna petrified over The Undertaker & Paul Bearer using the word “casket.”
Tim McNeany vs. Crush w/ Mr. Fuji
Crush shrugs off some punches before knocking McNeany down. We then hear from Crush with Fuji in an insert promo as he talks about the Royal Rumble match and going after Randy Savage. Crush continues to beat on McNeany until the tilt-a-whirl backbreaker gets the win (2:24). Ross then warns Savage about Crush coming after him.
Thoughts: They built up Crush as a potential Rumble winner while teasing that he will meet Savage in that match too.
The Thurman “Sparky” Plugg vignette airs.
The Headshrinkers w/ Afa vs. Dan Dubiel & Phil Apollo
Ross plugs a “TV taping” in Bushkill, PA as Gorilla wants to know how Plugg will fare in the WWF. Samu beats down Apollo to start. Samu avoids a dropkick then tags out after a brutal chop. Dubiel is in now but Fatu beats the crap out of him then we hear from The Headshrinkers in an insert promo as they speak in their native tongue. The Headshrinkers stay in control then Fatu puts Dubiel away with a flying splash (2:56).
Thoughts: They keep using The Headshrinkers as examples of partners who will fight each other if they square off in the Rumble.
Royal Rumble Report airs.
The Smoking Gunns tell us we can realize our dreams by staying in school and studying hard.
Tatanka vs. Jim Massenger
Massenger hits a few chops in the corner until Tatanka reverses things. The announcers talk about Tatanka vs. Borga at the Rumble as Massenger hits a flying clothesline. Tatanka fights back then uses a flying body press for the win (1:24). We now see Borga heading down the aisle as a few refs try to hold him back. Another ref is in the ring restraining Tatanka then we go to break.
Thoughts: Even more hype for Tatanka/Borga at the Rumble with some lame threat of a brawl here. This all came off half-assed.
The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer vs. Derek Domino
Ross plugs the casket reveal for next week then Undertaker beats on Domino and puts him away with a Tombstone (2:06). Ross says we might have just seen the next WWF Champion then the show ends.
Thoughts: They really are trying to build up Undertaker as someone who could easily walk out of the Rumble as champion.
Final Thoughts: Again, Challenge was treated like a recap show featuring squash matches as they hyped both the PPV and this coming Monday’s RAW.
