WWF Monday Night RAW – January 3rd, 1994

January 3, 1994

From the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, NY

Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Johnny Polo

Show starts off with the Undertaker’s Workshop segment we saw on this past weekend’s syndicated shows then is followed by the interview with Jim Cornette, Mr. Fuji, and Yokozuna from “Wrestling Challenge” where we learn that Yokozuna is afraid of the word “casket.”

This week in action are Yokozuna, Shawn Michaels, Jeff Jarrett, and the featured match of the Smoking Gunns vs. Bam Bam Bigelow & Bastion Booger.

Yokozuna w/ Mr. Fuji vs. Dan Dubiel

Yokozuna tosses Dubiel down as Polo calls him “dope” then explains to Vince how that means he’s cool. Polo was quite amusing on commentary throughout the show but, like most of this time, Vince seems distracted on air due to all the legal issues surrounding the company. Yokozuna then slams Dubiel with one arm as we get another mild “USA “chant. Polo is upset that the crowd is “dissing his homeboy” then Yokozuna crushes Dubiel with a belly-to-belly suplex. Vince promises an interview with Luger will air tonight and that the hotline to call and show support for Luger has closed. Yokozuna continues to beat on Dubiel before the Bonzai Drop gets the win (3:50).

Thoughts:

Vince then angers Polo by showing footage for Luger defeating Jacques this past weekend on “Superstars.” We then see Vince conduct an empty arena interview with Luger. He asks Luger about his win this past weekend and if this momentum will hit a wall if he is not included in the Royal Rumble match. Luger says he is anxious to hear the decision and appreciates the fan support. Vince talks about the winner of the Rumble facing the Champion at WrestleMania and this evolves into Yokozuna being afraid to face him before Luger talks about dealing with whatever decision is made and will remain optimistic. Luger then promises to be fired up if in the Rumble match.

The Thurman “Sparky” Plugg vignette airs.

Bam Bam Bigelow w/ Luna Vachon & Bastion Booger vs. Smoking Gunns

Bigelow overpowers Billy to start. Billy sends Bigelow through the ropes with a dropkick then Bart threatens to jump on to Bigelow from the apron. Bart now tags in and works the arm as Polo says the Gunns are bigger than they look. Bart works the arm but Bigelow fights back and tags out. Booger drops Bart with a clothesline then the Gunns regroup outside as we head to break. We return as the Gunns take Booger down with a double shoulder block but after that Bart gets dumped outside. The heels neutralize Bart as the announcers talk about the Rumble match. Bart avoids an avalanche from Booger then is able to make the tag as Billy runs wild on Bigelow. The Gunns now work over Bigelow and get a nearfall with a double back drop. We now see Booger trying to woo Luna on the outside and he even kisses her but gets slapped. Booger kisses again then Bigelow side steps a diving attack while Booger continues to evade Luna’s personal space until Bigelow finally sees and heads out where they brawl and get counted out (8:18) *1/2.

Thoughts:

Royal Rumble Report airs.

Lord Alfred does a voice over celebration the Monday Night RAW one year anniversary show that will take place next week.

Jeff Jarrett vs. John Crystal

Polo was irked that his mother thinks Vince is a good commentator as Jarrett dropkicks Crystal then struts around. Jarrett calls out Luger as he chokes out Crystal as the announcers once again hype up the Rumble match and how the winner gets a World Heavyweight Title shot at WrestleMania. Crystal avoids an elbow in the corner then gets a two count with a powerslam. Crystal then ducks his head but Jarrett uses a jumping DDT and gets the win (3:04).

Thoughts:

Clips of last week’s Marty Jannetty vs. Polo match. We then see Marty & 1-2-3 Kid head down to the ring as they ask Polo for a match against The Quebecers. Polo says they have a match at the Rumble then Kid brings up how Polo said he could beat both of them. Kid then asks for the titles to be put on the line and Polo caves in then says that its just a tune-up for the Hart Brothers.

Razor Ramon once again tells us that “smokers are losers.”

Shawn Michaels w/ Diesel vs. Brian Walsh

Diesel is now back to being Shawn’s bodyguard. Jacques is now on the phone as Shawn works over Walsh. Jacques says he is a fighting champion and has no problem putting the titles on the line as Shawn now works the arm of Walsh but Walsh fights back and uses a monkey flip then they have a reversal sequence that ends with Walsh sling-shotting Shawn into the corner. Walsh rolls up Shawn for two but gets caught in a powerslam. Shawn dumps Walsh outside and Diesel tosses him back in then they do it again and after that Shawn hits a delayed vertical suplex for two after Shawn pulled up before the three count. Shawn now works a chin lock as the announcers talk about the Intercontinental Title picture. Shawn stays in control as Vince plugs next week’s Tag Team Title match and how Bigelow vs. Booger will also take place. Walsh almost pins Shawn with a sunset flip then follows with a dropkick but whiffs on a second attempt. Shawn then catches Walsh with a super kick then puts him away with a piledriver (5:17).

Thoughts:

The hosts run down next week’s show as Polo assures us that Marty & Kid are just a stepping stone before the Rumble.
