Indies and Insanity: May 9, 2019 (Thursday Night Thread)

Tonight!  It’s some critical Game 6 showdowns as the Raptors and Nuggets look to make the final four, but the Blazers and Sixers want to force a Do Or Die Game 7 while at home.  Meanwhile, it’s Game 1 of the NHL Eastern Conference Final as the Bruins face the Hurricanes.  In addition, we have a lot of college spring sports tournament games going on — my Duke team is playing Notre Dame in softball and I’ll be paying attention to that.

And I’m the only one, I’m sure.

You, on the other hand, will be doing wrestling things, so here’s our look at how wrestling exists beyond WWE, TNA, and AEW!

After a few hangover weeks thanks to WrestleMania, we come back with a vengeance with TWELVE shows this weekend that wrestling fans will be interested in (we hope)!  Let’s go around the horn!

  • We start as always in CMLL, where Super Viernes will run as always on Friday night on Claro!  Amapola and Kaho Kobayashi have the Lightning Match of the week in a rare women’s lightning match, but the big match is the Trios main event: Dragon Lee, Mistico 2, and Volador Jr square off against Barbaro Cavernario, Niebla, and the man that time forgot, Negro Casas!
  • Hey, here’s an easy preview for me: PWG is in LA on Friday Night with Mystery Vortex VI!  Traditionally, you are told nothing about the card beforehand and they STILL sell out.  That’s brand loyalty!
  • Earlier that day, Revolution Pro will be in York Hall in London for Epic Encounter 2019!  Your epic encounter: Aussie Open vs Zach Sabre Jr and Minoru Suzuki for the tag titles!  In addition, David Starr defends the cruiserweight gold against El Phantasmo in a ladder match!
  • Friday also sees a double-header out in Detroit (okay, Livonia, close enough)!  First up is SHINE 58, as the women’s promotion headlines with the Twisted Sisterz getting a rematch for the Tag Titles against Luscious Latasha and Gabby Gilbert!  In addition, Aja Perera defends the Nova championship against Shotzi Blackheart!  And when SHINE 58 is over, don’t leave the building…
  • …because EVOLVE 127 is next!  Champion Austin Theory will not be defending the title, but will face Adam Cole (BAYBAY) in the main event!  AR Fox and Leon Ruff face Harlem Bravado and his guest partner Kassius Ohno!  Eddie Kingston squares off against Curt Stallion!  We got JD Drake!  Anthony Henry!  Anthony Greene!  Joe Gacy!  Babatunde!  So much more!
  • Saturday night in Chicago, AAW is back with Take No Prisoners!  Assuming David Starr’s airline doesn’t go bankrupt on him again, he’ll be in the arena to face Sami Callihan for the big gold in the main event!  Plus it’s Mance Warner challenging MJF for the secondary gold, Jessicka Havoc facing Thunder Rose for the women’s title, and the Lucha Bros in a special challenge match against Team Tremendous!
  • CHIKARA is at the WrestleFactory Saturday afternoon for the Infinite Gauntlet!  (NOTE: no truth to the rumor that the match will eliminate half its participants at once.  Although CHIKARA has employed time travel before, so there may be a reference to Avengers yet.  Hey, don’t look at me like that, the spoiler embargo’s been lifted.)  In addition to the Rumble-esque main event, Still Life with Apricots and Pears will defend their Young Lions Cup against Thief Ant, while the rest of the Colony faces the Creatures of the Deep!
  • CZW is in their haunts of Voorhees on Saturday night for the Tangled Web!  John Silver defends the big gold against Matt Tremont, The Rep have an open defense, Fred Yehi tackles Gary Jay… but the main event is the aforementioned Tangled Web, as Brandon Kirk and MASADA will square with just about ALL the barbed wire involved!
  • Saturday night GMT sees EVE’s ninth anniversary show, She Persisted.  Not many card details, but nevertheless She Persisted will feature Kay Lee Ray and Viper in some of their final independent matches!  In addition, we’ve been told Nicole Matthews will be in action!
  • Meanwhile, in Dresden, WXW will put on True Colors on Saturday!  Bobby Gunns defends the big gold against Ilja Dragunov and Maruis Al-Ani in a triple threat match!  Meanwhile, Emil Sitoci puts the Shotgun title on the line against Avalanche, and Alexander James teams with his Crown partner Jurn Simmons against Julian Pace and former Young Lions Cup, TFT, and Commonwealth Cup winner Wheeler YUTA!
  • Sunday afternoon, in their home base of Concord NC, it’s PWX with The Art of War, and that means a WARGAMES MAIN EVENT!  The Syndicate fields a team of Elijah Evans, Jason Cade, TJ Boss, Montana Black, and Savannah Evans as they face Ethan Case, Hollis and Skyler, Harlem Bravado, and Tommy Dreamer!  (Yes, I think Tommy Dreamer is required by federal law to be in a WarGames match on the indies.)  Meanwhile, the WorkHorsemen team up to take on Drew Adler and Tracer X!
  • But our PROMOTION OF THE WEEK is WrestleCircus…. they’re baaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!  And the show Encore comes to you Sunday night in Austin, TX!  Joey Janela faces Sammy Guevara, Sami Callihan takes on JT Dunn, Orange Cassidy faces Gentleman Jervis, plus we’ll have The Rascalz, Leva Bates, Peter Avalon, Shazza McKenzie, Scorpio Sky, and much more!

Your Independent Match Video of the Week is from GCW’s WrestleMania weekend.  Remember Tommy Hall describing that match where a fan with no legs took part?  Well, that “fan” is Dustin Thomas, and he faced Tony Deppen in an open challenge.  View it here, as seen in Joey Janela’s Spring Break III!

Bring the insanity!
