Rock Star Gary reflects on WCCW 04-16-1983

Taped from Dallas, TX

Airdate: April 16, 1983 (taped 04/01)

Attendance: unknown

Hosted by Bill Mercer

Who will win the battle of handcuffs? How does Flair react after his narrow victory last week? There’s a newcomer to Devastation, Inc. And who will be my special guest for this week’s reflection?

Sorry, Carol. Hopefully some ‘rasslin’ will help you during your incarceration.

Opening montage.

Similar to last week, this show emanated from the State Fair Coliseum.

As Mercer opens the program, David joins him and believes that Kevin got the “wrong end of the stick.” He then gives Sunshine an I-told-you–so about the spanking last week.

Match 1: The Mongol (w/ King Kong Bundy) versus Mike Bond

Highlights:

  • For those unaware, the Mongol was portrayed by Gene Petit a.k.a. Cousin Luke.
  • Mongol slammed Bond and delivered a back elbow.
  • When Bond gave Mongol a cross corner whip, he ate knees on his follow-through.
  • Mongol then slammed Bond again and tied him to the Tree of Woe.
  • As the Mongol hooked Bond in a variation of a Canadian backbreaker, Bond submitted.
  • Mongol won.

Rating: DUD

Summary: Duller than dishwater.

Sorry, Carol. It sounds like you’ll be on double-secret probation in there.

After the match, Monica Hunter interviews Bundy with the Mongol. Bundy cuts a promo on Yatsu about Mongol replacing Kabuki.

Following a commercial break, an adamant Ric Flair gives an interview after his slim victory over Kevin last week. Footage from the end of the match is shown. Afterward, Mercer interviews referees Bronko Lubich and David Manning. As they discuss “the rules,” Flair chastises Manning for his lack of authority during the match.

Match 2: King Kong Bundy versus Jose Lothario

Highlights:

  • Bundy hooked a bear hug, but Lothario rang his bell immediately.
  • As three minutes remained in the match, Bundy delivered a back elbow.
  • He then hit a knee drop for only a 1-count.
  • With one minute left, Bundy gave Lothario a cross corner whip followed by an avalanche.
  • He then gave Lothario another cross corner whip but came up empty on his follow-through.
  • When Lothario hammered on Bundy, the bell rang.
  • Referee Fred Sinclair declared the match a time limit draw.

Rating: DUD

Summary: Boring waste of time.

From the estate of General Skandor Akbar, Mercer interviews him with the Mongol, Kumar, and Friday–Kamala’s caretaker. When Mercer requests Kamala’s presence, Akbar warns people to be careful with him. He then explains that Kabuki was injured again at the hands of Yatsu, so Kamala will replace him. Next, he runs down the Von Erichs and promotes the Mongol. Kamala emerges through the woods and shoves Mercer down to end the segment.

Match 3 (handcuff): David Von Erich versus Terry Gordy (w/ Michael Hayes)

Highlights:

  • Once the handcuffs were attached, Hayes was ejected from ringside.
  • Like a slimy heel, Gordy stalled incessantly before getting handcuffed to David.
  • While the Dallas faithful chanted “go David, go,” Gordy nailed their hero with the handcuff chain.
  • As a result, David was BUSTED OPEN.
  • Nevertheless, David hooked an Iron claw, but Gordy escaped.
  • David then countered a piledriver by going through Gordy’s legs.
  • After he nailed Gordy somewhere near Brownsville, David secured a cradle.
  • 1-2-3.
  • David won.

Rating: **

Summary: Bloody brawl where the handcuffs assisted in Gordy’s demise.

After the match, Manning unlocks Gordy who proceeds to handcuff David to the top rope. Hayes returns, and the Freebirds double-team David. Suddenly, “Iceman” King Parsons hits the ring to even the odds and shoo the Freebirds away.

Following a commercial break, Mercer interviews the Freebirds. Gordy, despite the loss, claims to be a “nasty individual” and threatens an “awful whoopin’” on the Von Erichs.

Conclusion:  Unique stipulation match aside, the Von Erich-Freebird feud continues unabated. With the exception of Kamala’s introduction, the show was horrendously boring. What are your thoughts, Carol?

Not sure about your release, but I appreciate your stopping by and stay away from your demons.

TV Rating: NONE
