Hart/Michaels; Why did they hate each other?

I know Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels hated each other when they both worked for the WWF/E. My question is WHY could they not stand each other? Was it just a simple clash of personalities, or did it go deeper than that?
They actually were friends until 1997, when they started the storyline where they hated each other. And they took it so far that they “worked themselves into a shoot” as Shawn famously said. Had they not started doing the personal stuff on TV, they probably never would have had an issue.
