WWF Wrestling Challenge – January 24th, 1993

January 24, 1993

From the Beaumont Civic Center in Beaumont, TX

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan

This week, we have the Bret Hart interview from “Superstars.” In actin are Yokozuna, Tatanka, and Shawn Michaels.

Tatanka vs. Iron Mike Sharpe

Heenan says if Tatanka loses the Rumble match he will no longer be considered undefeated but Gorilla says he will still be undefeated in singles competition and the Rumble does not count. Gorilla puts over Tatanka as a proponent of ICOPRO as Tatanka takes control of the match. We hear from Tatanka in an insert promo saying he is the first Native American in the Rumble match and will go on to face the champion at WrestleMania. Tatanka blocks a kick and clotheslines Sharpe as the announcers now talk about Yokozuna’s chances in the Rumble. Tatanka fires up then puts Sharpe away with a Samoan drop (2:23).

Thoughts: With how they said Tatanka’s undefeated streak would remain intact even if he did get eliminated from the Rumble match it all but said Tatanka would not be winning the Rumble. And I do not think anyone had him as a favorite anyway.

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. Replay of Doink the Clown attacking Crush last week on “Superstars.”

Bob East vs. Papa Shango

The announcers talk about Doink as Shango backs East into the corner. Shango misses an avalanche but beats East down anyway then we hear from Berzerker in an insert promo saying its every man for himself at the Rumble and to not get in his way. Shango stays in control then puts East away with a reverse shouderbreaker (1:29).

Thoughts: Again, Shango’s matches are now a backdrop to talk about other happening in the promotion. A surefire sign they are done pushing him as any sort of threat.

Heenan talks about Narcissus. Same as we saw from Superstars.

Nasty Boys vs. Chuck West & Isi Bermudez

The Nasty Boys beat on Bermudez to start as the announcers talk about the Rumble Hotline. Bermudez gets hit with the Pit Stop then we hear from the Nasty Boys talk about the Rumble match. West tags in and gets beat down then put away with a running powerslam/flying elbow drop combo (2:31).

Thoughts: Some hype for the Nasty Boys in the Rumble match. They remain the #1 contenders to the Tag Team Titles.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan talks about the Headlock on Hunger and how we can donate.

Yokozuna w/ Mr. Fuji vs. Rudy Flores

Heenan said that Yokozuna ate over $700 of sushi the other night during dinner as Gorilla does the bit about Heenan being cheap with Heenan saying he forgot his wallet that night. Typhoon is shown in an insert promo saying everyone will be talking about him Monday morning and how he will be getting a title shot at WrestleMania. Yokozuna destroys Flores and puts him away with a Bonzai Drop (1:36).

Thoughts: Just like his partner Earthquake, Typhoon also calls out Yokozuna as the super heavyweights all want to show Yokozuna he is not the biggest and baddest in the company.

Bob Backlund vs. Louie Spicolli

Gorilla talks about the WWF guaranteeing three hours of action at the Royal Rumble. Heenan accuses Backlund of copying his moves as Backlund takes control of the match. Backlund is then shown in an insert promo telling us he has a gigantic mountain to climb and if he wins will get the title shot he has been waiting ten years to get. Backlund now hits a butterfly suplex then uses a rolling cradle for the win (1:57).

Thoughts: They are still going with the Backlund comeback story despite Backlund getting terrible crowd reactions since his return. The dated style isn’t flying today.

The announcers plug the newest edition of “Spotlight” magazine with Bret Hart on the cover.

Bret’s interview on Superstars is shown.

Rumble Report is shown.

Reno Riggins vs. Shawn Michaels

The announcers talk about Sensational Sherri being part of the Intercontinental Title match at the Rumble and whose corner she will be in as Shawn cheap shots Riggins after a reversal sequence. Riggins hits a cartwheel back elbow smash but Shawn reverses a slingshot and sends Riggins to the floor. We hear from Marty Jannetty in an insert promo telling Shawn he is coming to get him at the Rumble as Shawn drills Riggins with a super kick then puts him away with a teardrop suplex (2:20).

Thoughts: More hype on the Intercontinental Title match at the Rumble with the story of whose corner Sherri will appear.

We are alerted that Shawn Michaels left the building.

Gorilla plugs how next week we will learn of the WrestleMania IX main event as Heenan believes Razor will be the new champion.

Final Thoughts: More last-minute hype for the PPV, which aired the same day of this show. Next week we will go over the fallout from the PPV and learn of the WrestleMania IX main event.
