WWF Wrestling Challenge – January 17th, 1993

January 17, 1993

From the Dane County Coliseum in Madison, WI

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan

Ric Flair vs. Jim Powers

This is at least the third time Flair and Powers have wrestled on TV. Powers was like Flair’s personal enhancement talent in the WWE or something. They end in a stalemate after some mat work then we hear from Flair in an insert promo saying how he won the Rumble match last year and will do the same again this year. Gorilla says its “highly improbable” that Flair repeats then runs down the list of competitors. Both men continue to trade holds until Flair backs Powers into the corner and hits some chops. Powers fights back but whiffs on a dropkick then Flair hits a suplex before the figure four gets the win (3:04).

Thoughts: The commentary was interesting with Gorilla constantly saying how Flair was not going to win the Rumble match. It set for the theme of the night on commentary.

Gorilla plugs the Royal Rumble program.

Raymond Rougeau welcomes Mr. Perfect to the interview platform. Perfect jokes about Flair walking in his shadow then Flair runs up on the platform but is held back by officials. Perfect then said Flair was in a robe with “chicken feathers” because he is a chicken and tells him to leave before he slaps the beak off of his face. Flair is then ordered backstage as the camera zooms in on Perfect, who calls out Flair again and says he is back to become the World Heavyweight Champion and starting with the Rumble. Flair runs back out and Perfect lands a few shots before Sgt. Slaughter and Rene Goulet hold Flair back while Heenan screams how he hates Perfect. The dialogue was lame but the intensity was good as this feud amps up. And another thing, it was odd how many originals segments Flair had on Challenge. Lots of the major stuff happened on Superstars but Flair had more Challenge originals than anyone else close to his level. It was like saying he was the star of the “B” show.

Dale Wolfe vs. The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer

Gorilla teases Flair about being eliminated early in the Rumble as Undertaker hits Wolfe with a ropewalk attack. Undertaker then hits a chokeslam before a tombstone gets the win (2:06). After the match, Undertaker stuffs Wolfe into a bodybag.

Thoughts: Again, more of Gorilla teasing Heenan about Flair not being able to win this year’s Rumble match.

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. George Anderson

Heenan says he will tell us about Narcissus later on in the show. Bigelow beats down Anderson as we hear from Big Bossman telling Bigelow he will serve him hard time at the Rumble. Bigelow drops Anderson with a back elbow smash then chokes him out on the mat and soon after that puts him away with a diving headbutt (1:51).

Thoughts: Bossman is barely on TV anymore so this feud has little going for it and since Bigelow is being pushed and advertised for matches against Bret Hart at house shows, its easy to predict who will win.

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. Same as “Superstars” Update segment focusing on Kamala aligning with Slick.

Dave Sigfrids vs. Lance Cassidy

Heenan once again talks about revealing Narcissus at the Rumble. Sigfrids rakes Cassidy’s eyes and hits a knee smash but Cassidy comes back with a crossbody for two. Sigfrids rolls outside after getting dropkicked twice as Gorilla plugs the “WWF Magazine” centerfold hyping Bret Hart vs. Razor Ramon at the Royal Rumble. Sigfrids works the arm briefly but Cassidy reverses then uses a bulldog for the win (1:51). Gorilla believes that Cassidy will do well in the WWF.

Thoughts: This ended up being Cassidy’s final TV WWF appearance and he had already quit at this point.

Heenan tells us about Narcissus and said unlike Mr. Perfect there is not a blemish on his body or backstabbing thought in his mind. So, we have Perfect and Flair feuding on this show while Heenan tells us that Perfect pales in comparison to Narcissus to set up a feud between them in the future because Perfect is going to need someone to feud with because Flair was already heading out the door to rejoin WCW.

Royal Rumble Report airs.

Razor Ramon vs. Jerry Fox

Razor chops Fox in the corner before hitting a super fallaway slam. The announcers talk about the possible WrestleMania IX Title matches as Gorilla shoots down the thought of Flair being involved. Razor stays in control then hits the Razor’s Edge for the win (2:07). After the match, Razor looks into the camera and says Bret is his at the Royal Rumble before bragging about attacking Owen.

Thoughts:  Another impressive showing in the ring by Razor as he has been doing some good work on TV for the build to the title match.

Next week in action are Shawn Michaels, Tatanka, Yokozuna, and the Nasty Boys. Plus, an interview with Razor Ramon.

Final Thoughts: The Perfect/Flair segment was fun as the rest of the show was basic PPV hype. We get one more week of hype then its the PPV.
