WWF Superstars – January 16th, 1993

January 16, 1993

From the Green Bay Expo Center in Green Bay, WI

Your hosts are Vince McMahon, Jerry “The King” Lawler, and Randy Savage

The show starts off with a pre-taped Bret Hart promo where he runs down Razor Ramon. He showed good intensity and also mentioned Razor attacking his brother Owen.

Razor Ramon vs. Buck Zumhoffe

We are shown an insert of the newest edition of “WWF Magazine” that features an article on Razor. The match starts off with Razor beating on Zumhoffe. He then hits a super back suplex and puts Zumhoffe away with the Razor’s Edge (1:05). After the match, Lawler declares that Razor will be wearing gold around his waist after the Royal Rumble.

Thoughts: Good stuff here as the challenger destroys an enhancement talent to put him over heading into his championship match at the PPV.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This focuses on Kamala turning on Harvey Whippleman & Kimchee then aligning with Slick. After that we see Slick with Kamala as he calls out Whippleman & Kimchee for their abuse and will help Kamala see the light with our help too. Whippleman then says Kamala will never be the same once Kimchee gets through with him then promises the WWF will also never be the same after he drops the “big bomb.”

The hosts are now talking about seeing the light.

Nasty Boys vs. Mickey Jay & Rock Werner

Yes, that is future WCW referee Mickie Jay. Lawler tells us that the Nasty Boys have been named to the Royal Rumble match. We now see Doink the Clown in the aisle as the Nasty Boys work Jay over. We hear from the Nasty Boys as they call out Money Inc. while talking about the Rumble match. Werner tags in and gets beaten down then the Nasty Boys use a running powerslam/flying elbow drop combo for the win (3:30).

Thoughts: Hype for both the Tag Team Title feud and the Royal Rumble match.

Raymond Rougeau welcomes Shawn Michaels to the interview platform. He asks Shawn about Sherri and which corner she will be in but Shawn says he knows and that Sherri will not be in the corner of a man that brutally attacked her with a mirror like Marty Jannetty. Shawn says that Sherri is deeply and passionately in love with him and Sherri will be in his corner. Shawn then says Marty will be carried out for the final time after the Rumble then announces that he is leaving the building. Shawn continues to show improvement on the mic and is nailing the arrogance aspect of his character. They story now is which corner Sherri will be in and based off of the past few weeks its tough not to think she will end up in Marty’s corner.

WT Jones vs. Crush

Crush puts Jones in a surfboard as we hear him in an insert promo saying that no one will stop him at the Royal Rumble while saying “Bruh” several times. Crush then press slams Jones before using a head vice for the win (2:02). After the match, Crush slaps hands with the fans then sees Doink, who still has his arm in a sling. Doink offers Crush a flower and Crush accepts then walks away. However, Doink takes the sling off and attacks Crush from behind with a prosthetic arm. Doink continues the attack until several officials break it up. Vince then yells about Doink being a sick individual as Savage says that is the only way a big man like that can be brought down. We then see the siren as the EMT’s wheel down a stretcher as Crush is taken away with Savage expressing a lot of concern.

Thoughts: The attack did not look as bad as they made it out to be on commentary. And Crush getting attacked after foolishly accepting something from Doink made him look like a dumbass even if the gag of having a prosthetic arm was creative. At least they framed it that this was the only way someone Crush’s size could be brought down. The tone on commentary was that this was a serious injury.

Back from break as we get a close up of Crush’s face on the stretcher.

Yokozuna w/ Mr. Fuji vs. Carl Almont

Yokozuna skies Almont for a German Suplex as we see his face in an insert promo while Mr. Fuji talks about him winning the Rumble match. Yokozuna continues to beat the shit out of Almont then puts him away with a Bonzai splash (1:37).

Thoughts: All hype for Yokozuna being a threat to win the Rumble due to his size.

Crush is now shown backstage getting examined and he even has an oxygen mask over his face.

Royal Rumble Report with Gene Okerlund. This gets interrupted to show Crush actually being put into the ambulance and driven out of the arena. New Rumble match entrants include: Skinner, Repo Man, Damien Demento, Owen Hart, Koko B. Ware, and as we heard earlier, the Nasty Boys. Not exactly a murderers row.

Tatanka vs. Tom Bennett

Tatanka slams Bennett after we heard him in an insert promo vowing to win the Royal Rumble then soon after that hits a Samoan drop for the win (1:14).

Thoughts: A quick win for Tatanka whose undefeated streak is making him a strong possibility to win the Rumble match.

Next week, we will get an update on Crush’s condition as we are shown a slo-mo replay of the attack.

Final Thoughts: The show was centered around Doink attacking Crush. We had good interviews from Bret and Shawn too as well as the basic Royal Rumble hype with the PPV just eight days away.
