Steve Austin in 2004

Why did Steve Austin leave the WWE so abruptly shortly after W.M. 20 in 2004? Was there some kind of dispute with his contract, or was it something else? I remember he was doing that stupid "Sheriff of Raw", Co-Authority figure role along with Bischoff at the time.
I don't even remember, he probably just wanted to do other things. He was back in 2005 anyway, wasn't he?
