WWF Superstars – August 29th, 1992

August 29, 1992

From the Von Braun Civic Center in Huntsville, AL

Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Mr. Perfect

Clips from “SummerSlam Spectacular” of Randy Savage and Ultimate Warrior arguing with each other before their match against the Nasty Boys.

Vince hypes up SummerSlam and to buy on PPV.

Ric Flair w/ Mr. Perfect vs. Joey Maggs

We now see the screen to the right of the stage that shows the wrestler’s graphic that was featured on the SummerSlam Spectacular. Maggs takes Flair down with a shoulder block then hits a pair of dropkciks after an Irish whip sequence. Maggs briefly works a side headlock but Flair backs him into the corner then chops away. Maggs gets dumped and kicked by Perfect on the outside. Maggs now backs off Perfect but Flair attacks from behind then takes Maggs back inside and chops him a few times. Flair then hits a delayed vertical suplex as Vince promises more highlights of the tag match then Flair uses the figure four for the win (2:56).

Thoughts: Maggs got a little bit of shine in this match and looked solid but the focus was on the SummerSlam main event and Vince hammering home the point of SummerSlam not being broadcast live on PPV and instead airing two days later.

The Ultimate Warrior is shown in a promo. He tells Randy Savage he’s aware of the storyline he’s painted as we see clips of their feud. Warrior tells us that he would not stand and let Flair & Perfect beat Savage but now learned that Savage paid them off. Warrior recaps their feud and said he realized after getting beat down at the SummerSlam Spectacular that Savage sold his soul to the devil so now at SummerSlam he will release all of his fury and rage and Savage will never be the same.

We now hear from Savage. He says Warrior almost had him fooled but bottom line is that Warrior sold out to Perfect and will have Perfect in his corner at SummerSlam. Savage said he granted Warrior the match but Warrior could not get it done alone so he went out to pay Perfect. Savage said Flair & Perfect called him out because Warrior paid him off and that Warrior ran out late for the save and threw a roundhouse right in which we see in slo-mo that barely connected and how Flair & Perfect were unscathed. Savage also accused Warrior of already having the deal in place before Flair interrupted him on the interview platform because that was the first time where Perfect being in anyone’s corner was mentioned. Savage then says Warrior’s story does not mix and neither to they and after SummerSlam he will still be the champion and Warrior will have to live with that. These promos were of similar style that was used during the build to the “Mega Powers Explode” match at WrestleMania V and although the WMV buildup was all-time great stuff this Warrior/Savage storyline of both guys thinking the other paid off Perfect due to the mind games from Perfect & Flair is still good in its own right.

Pat Rose vs. Tatanka

Perfect returns to the booth laughing and says we will not find out whose corner he will be in until tomorrow night. Vince mentions how Tatanka attacked Fuji at the SummerSlam Spectacular and that Berzerker is more pissed off. Rose bails after Tatanka beats off then we hear from Tatanka in an insert promo as he promises Berzerker will feel the wrath of his tomahawk chop. Tatanka stays in control as Vince tries to get an answer out of Perfect then puts Rose away with a Samoan drop (3:00). We see Tatanka merch in the crowd too, including a foam tomahawk.

Thoughts: Tatanka gets an easy win and we see his merch in the crowd so expect to see more of his push in the future.

Kamala w/ Harvey Whippleman & Kimchee vs. Jeff Daniels

Kamala destroys Daniels as Whippleman is in an insert promo telling Undertaker that SummerSlam will be his last match and Paul Bearer will be carrying around the Undertaker’s remains in his urn. Kamala stays in control then hits a splash for the win (1:48).

Thoughts: More hype for the Kamala/Undertaker match at Survivor Series.

Bret “The Hitman” Hart vs. Louie Spicolli

Perfect tells us that Papa Shango has put a curse on Bret Hart and as a result he picks British Bulldog to win at SummerSlam. Bret catches Spicolli with an inverted atomic drop as Vince puts over the family tension over the IC Title match. Bret is in an insert promo saying he hopes things turn back to normal after SummerSlam but what will remain the same is that he’ll still be the IC Champion. Bret stays in control then uses the Sharpshooter for the win (3:00).

Thoughts: Besides hyping up the family dynamic of Bret vs. Bulldog they also talked about Papa Shango possibly placing a curse on Bret over what happened last week when Bret saved an enhancement talent from a beating.

SummerSlam Report with Gene Okerlund.

“The Model” Rick Martel vs. Justin Taylor

Martel works the arm as the announcers talk about his match against Shawn Michaels and how there is no hitting in the face. Martel now beats on Taylor in the corner as Vince believes either one of them would attack the face when given the opportunity. Sherri is shown in an insert promo ecstatic that neither man will have to worry about getting hit in the face then Martel uses a Boston Crab for the win (2:16).

Thoughts: The story here is that its likely either Shawn or Martel will break the stipulation at SummerSlam whenever they have the chance.

Final Thoughts: Besides the Warrior/Savage interviews the rest was basic last-minute PPV hype. They did hint at a few things possibly taking place on the PPV during the commentary and told us repeatedly that SummerSlam was not being broadcast live.
