From the Amarillo Civic Center in Amarillo, TX
Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Mr. Perfect. Vince goes on a rant about Sid Justice turning his back on Hulk Hogan at “Saturday Night’s Main Event.”
We are shown Sid Justice walking out on Hulk Hogan from “Saturday Night’s Main Event” and we hear comments from both men. After that, we see footage from “Wrestling Challenge” with Sid as guest on the “Barber Shop.” Beefcake told Sid he dumped Hogan out from behind because he was afraid to get face-to-face with Hogan. Beefcake then calls Hogan his best friend and runs down Sid for not being in his corner. Sid doesnt care about Beefcake’s friendship with Hogan then puts his arm around Beefcake and says he will do him a favor by rearranging his face. Sid then takes a chair and smashes the window as he screams for Hogan to come out. Beefcake runs backstage as Sid is screaming for Hogan to come out. Sid then proceeds to knock over most of the set as the camera zooms in on Beefcake’s shears. Sid is now running down Hogan for being a coward with powder all over his face then Sid says he is the man who rules the world. The camera now shows the shattered window from the rear as Sid taunts the crowd. I know the premise of the feud sucks but Sid’s work was tremendous, especially in tearing up the Barber Shop. If the guy improved in the ring and was more cooperative behind the scenes he would have been one of the biggest stars of the 90’s. And this was the final Barber Shop segment.
WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We learn of a new ruling from President Jack Tunney. Okerlund reads the statement and said due to the accusations of favoritism by Sid, there will now be two main events at WrestleMania. Ric Flair will now defend the World Heavyweight Title against Randy Savage while Sid will face Hulk Hogan. Okerlund says we will learn more about WrestleMania later on in the show. Honestly, I thought this was an incredibly lame excuse by Tunney. As far as why the Flair vs. Hogan match did not take place, there are many theories. Hogan leaving to film stuff after WrestleMania is to me the most plausible one. Hogan said himself that he had a bad relationship with Vince at the time and that Vince just went ahead and called off the match. And why did Savage get the title shot and not The Undertaker? And shouldn’t The Undertaker be upset? I guess it was because Savage was one of the final four left in the Rumble.
British Bulldog vs. Omar Atlas
Perfect seems upset about Flair’s opponent being changed and said as an executive consultant he should have been in on that decision. Bulldog takes Atlas over with a hip toss then Perfect says Savage wants the title to prove to Elizabeth that he is a real man. Atlas lands a few shots in the corner but Bulldog reverses an Irish whip and hits a running powerslam for the win (1:39).
Thoughts: They tried to get some heat on the newly announced World Heavyweight Title match for WrestleMania by Perfect saying Savage needs to prove he is a real man. Bulldog continues on without much direction.
More classic WrestleMania moments are shown. Vince then plugs a number to call for tickets and travel packages.
Nasty Boys w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Khris Germany & Larry Williams
The announcers talk about the Sid vs. Hogan match at WrestleMania as the Nasty Boys beat on Williams. Vince talks about Beefcake and the guts it took for him to come to the ring because of his facial injuries. Germany now tags in and gets his ass kicked until the Nasty Boys hit the running powerslam/flying elbow drop combo for the win (2:47).
Thoughts: Another match used as a backdrop to discuss one of the co-main events. They also focused on Beefcake as it seems he will be used more going forward.
Roddy Piper vs. Todd Overbow
Vince talks about Piper vs. Bret Hart for the Intercontinental Title at WrestleMania. Piper grounds Overbow to start as Vince talks about how he shocked the Mountie on SNME. We then hear from Bret Hart in an insert promo telling Piper he has his chance to win back the IC Title and to throw all the respect and friendship about the window because he wants his belt back. Overbow slaps Piper then gets paintbrushed and after that Piper uses a sleeper for the win (1:28).
Thoughts: Hart vs. Piper for the IC title is the direction for WrestleMania in an uncommon face vs. face match.
Shawn Michaels w/ Sensational Sherri vs. Rudy Gonzalez
Shawn has a face with a tear drop painted on the back of his jacket. He then sticks his earrings on Sherri’s dress. Shawn cheap shots the future trainer of his wrestling academy then hits him with a running clothesline from the apron. Shawn & Sherri are shown in an insert promo as Shawn never has a problem with his confidence and says sometimes you have to know when to go against the grain. Shawn drills Gonzalez with a super kick then hits a teardrop suplex for the win (1:42).
Thoughts: They are building Shawn up as an arrogant prick and that will intensify in the coming weeks.
WrestleMania Report with Gene Okerlund. We get a promo from Flair about now facing Savage for the title as he calls himself the man of the hour. Savage then tells Flair he has the best chance to beat him and for Flair to talk to him if he has the guts.
“The Model” Rick Martel vs. Terry Daniels
Vince thinks that Savage will beat Flair as Perfect at WrestleMania. Daniels now looks like El Dandy, a far cry from his days in the Cobra Corps. Both men mix it up to start. Martel gets cocky and Daniels works an armbar as Vince tells us next week we will see the Savage vs. Roberts match from SNME including footage from after the show went off the air as Jake ambushed Elizabeth. Martel takes control then puts Daniels away with a Boston Crab (2:08).
Thoughts: And they used this as a backdrop to talk about Savage vs. Roberts SNME match with what happened last week. With Savage vs. Flair announced for Mania, it appears something will happen to close the chapter on this feud.
Next week in action are Tatanka, Bret Hart, and Ted DiBiase & IRS. Plus, the Jake/Savage stuff from SNME and more!
Final Thoughts: Huge news this week with the co-main event announcement. And we will see what happened after SNME went off the air next week. The day before this show aired, however, there was a raid by the St. Louis PD and the DEA at the St. Louis Arena house show. Although the search did not come up with anything, it was more bad press on top of the steroid abuse stories and Barry O. going on a radio show to speak about sexual harassment from front office members. While the Road to WrestleMania was starting to heat up so was the negative press.
