WWF Wrestling Challenge – January 26th, 1992

January 26, 1992

From the Lee Civic Center in Ft. Myers, FL

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan

In action this week are Sid Justice, The Mountie, Virgil, and Irwin R. Schyster

Hacksaw Jim Duggan & Sgt. Slaughter vs. Pete Sanchez & Jim Cooper

Gorilla tells Heenan to tone down his excitement over Flair being the champion. Duggan leads the crowd into USA chants before tossing Cooper into the corner. Slaughter takes in and works the arm of Cooper then drops Sanchez with an elbow smash before the Irish whip/clothesline combo gets the win (1:58).

Thoughts: The focus was on commentary with Heenan as happy as could be due to the fact Flair is now the champion.

Royal Rumble Report airs. Same as we saw on this past week’s “Superstars of Wrestling.”

Kenny Kendall vs. Irwin R. Schyster

IRS tells us to make sure we have our receipts because its time to pay the tax man. Gorilla teases Heenan over who will face Flair at WrestleMania. IRS gets taunted by the crowd as he beats on Kendall then IRS uses the Write Off for the win (2:20).

Thoughts: The focus on commentary was on who will be facing Flair at WrestleMania.

The Chris Chavis vignette shown on “Superstars of Wrestling” airs.

Sid Justice vs. Brooklyn Brawler

Sid beats on Brawler in the corner before hitting a chokeslam. Sid then chokes out Brawler on the middle rope then angrily looks into the camera. Sid stays in control then uses a powerbomb for the win (2:04).

Thoughts: The crowd is into Sid and they are trying to make fans think he would be the favorite to challenge Flair with two dominating squash match wins this week and the fact he was the runner up in the Rumble match.

An ad for WrestleMania VII airs.

The Mountie w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Jimmy James

Mountie beats on James then tosses him outside. Heenan says Mountie got jobbed by Piper at the Rumble then Mountie takes James down from behind with a high knee. Back inside, Mountie puts James away with a knee drop then shocks James with his cattle prod (1:51).

Thoughts: Mountie was a lot more aggressive than usual as he is pissed over losing the Intercontinental Title.

El Matador vs. Barry Horowitz

Horowitz cheap shots Matador after a break as Heenan talks about riding in a limo with Flair. Matador uses a hip toss then Gorilla plugs “WBF Magazine.” Horowitz fires away but Matador fights back as Heenan talks about Flair being on the cover of WWF Magazine then Matador hits the El Paso de la Muerte for the win (1:37).

Thoughts: On commentary the focus was on Flair. The Matador/DiBiase feud seems to be fading away.

The comments from the top 5 contenders of the World Heavyweight Title that happened on “Superstars of Wrestling” airs.

Ray Hammer & Terry Davis vs. Beverly Brothers w/ The Genius

Heenan says letting fans decide the #1 contender is not fair to Flair. The Genius recites a poem trashing the New Foundation. Blake messes with Hammer then we hear from the New Foundation in an insert promo warning the Beverly Brothers. The Beverly Brothers stay in control until they put Davis away with the Shaker Heights Spike (2:06).

Thoughts: More hype for the Beverly Brothers/New Foundation feud as Heenan started up the “not fair to Flair” bit again.

Virgil vs. Bob Smedley

Virgil takes control as we hear from Repo Man in an insert promo as he promises to repossess the career of Virgil. Back to the match as Virgil stays in control then puts Smedley away with the Million Dollar Dream (2:07).

Thoughts: The Virgil/Repo Man feud continues.

Next week in action are the New Foundation, Jake Roberts, Ted DiBiase, Bret Hart, and the debut of Chris Chavis.

Final Thoughts: All the major stuff that took place on Superstars was shown here as Challenge and nothing to offer as far as exclusive segments. Now, we will figure out who will be facing Flair for the title as the Road to WrestleMania begins.
