WWF Wrestling Challenge – January 19th, 1992

January 19, 1992

From the Corpus Christi Memorial Auditorium in Corpus Christi, TX

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan. We hear Heenan go nuts saying Flair will be the champion and promises us a surprise for this show.

This week’s featured match is Randy Savage vs. Hercules. Also in action are Legion of Doom plus an update on last week’s “Barber Shop” segment and news of The Mountie beating Bret Hart for the Intercontinental Title 1/17 in Springfield, MA.

“Macho Man” Randy Savage w/ Elizabeth vs. Hercules

Both men fight over a lockup to start. Hercules rakes Savage across the eyes then lands a few shots before tossing him into the corner. Savage reverses an Irish whip and catches Hercules with a back elbow smash. We hear from Paul Bearer & The Undertaker as they talk about giving the other 29 Rumble competitors eternal rest. Hercules tries a splash biut Savage got his knees up then Savage follows with a slam then puts Hercules away with a flying elbow drop (2:02).

Thoughts: Another win over a name opponent for Savage this week as an attempt to build him up as a Rumble favorite. This also ended up being the final syndicated TV appearance for Hercules in the WWF.

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. Same as Superstars which focused on the Intercontinental Title change and switched the IC Title match at the Rumble to The Mountie vs. Roddy Piper.

Dusty Daze vs. British Bulldog

Bulldog works over Daze then hits a vertical suplex. We hear from Texas Tornado in an insert promo saying there are no friends in the Rumble match then Bulldog puts Daze away with a running powerslam (2:02).

Thoughts: A quick win for Bulldog as the every man for himself theme at the Rumble was pushed.

Heenan arranges for the 12/29 “Wrestling Challenge” match between Flair vs. Ludden match to be shown again, claiming it was due to fan demands.

Okerlund interview with Hogan from Superstars

Legion of Doom vs. Brian Donahue & ???

The enhancement talent guys were not announced andI could not recognize Donahue’s partner. The LoD beat down Donahue to start. We then hear from the Natural Disasters & Jimmy Hart as they run down the LoD to hype their match at the Rumble. The other guy tags in and the LoD beat him down as Heenan jokingly bribes Gorilla to play that Flair match again then the LoD hit the Doomsday Device for the win (2:40).

Thoughts: Some last minute hype for the Tag Team Title match at the Rumble.

Replay of Shawn Michaels turning on Marty Jannetty last week on the “Barber Shop”

Royal Rumble Report with Gene Okerlund.

Nasty Boys w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Larry Sampson & Bobby Jones

Knobbs hits Jones with a few elbow drops as the announcers talk about the possibility of the Nasty Boys facing each other in the Rumble match. We then hear from Sid Justice as he tells us no one will stop him from being the champion then Saggs puts Sampson away with a pumphandle slam (1:58). The Nasty Boys beat down their opponents after the match.

Thoughts: They talked about what would happen if the Nasty Boys faced off against each other in the Rumble but that never had a chance of happening as Knobbs was stabbed after a show shortly before the PPV and missed the event altogether.

The announcers remind us to order the Rumble before the show ends.

Final Thoughts: More last minute Rumble hype as this show aired the same day as the PPV.
