From the Springfield Civic Center in Springfield, MA
Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan
In action this week are Virgil, Beverly Brothers, and the New Foundation. Plus, an interview with The Mountie and more!
Virgil vs. Brooklyn Brawler
Gorilla tells us that Virgil is ecstatic over being part of the Royal Rumble match. Brawler hammers away to start. Virgil catches Brawler with an inverted atomic drop then works the arm. We then hear from the Repo Man in an insert promo telling us the Holiday Season is a time for taking and once again threatens to steal Virgil’s career. Virgil follows up a neckbreaker with a pair of clotheslines as Gorilla tells Heenan a lot of people in the WWF hate Ric Flair. Virgil stays in control then puts Brawler away with the Million Dollar Dream (3:10).
Thoughts: They continue to hype the Repo Man/Virgil feud and put over the fact that Flair is a hated man in the WWF.
WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. Same as Superstars where we learn of the newly announced Royal Rumble competitors.
Beverly Brothers w/ The Genius vs. Tony Diamond & Bill Pierce
The Beverly Brothers beat down Diamond to start. We then hear from The Genius in an insert promo as he promises to humiliate the New Foundation. Pierce is in now and gets tossed by Blake then the Beverly Brothers put him away with the Shaker Heights Spike (2:46).
Thoughts: Odd there was no mention of the Beverly Brothers/Bushwhackers feud due to the stuff with Jamison but the Beverly Brothers did attack Jim Neidhart, prompting him to get himself a partner, so they are not letting that story die without resolution.
Ross Greenberg vs. Skinner
Gorilla plugs the “WWF Spotlight” magazine cover with the Legion of Doom and wonders why they have not been announced yet for the Rumble match. Gorilla also mentions that there are just 14 spots left. Jamison is shown eating something in the crowd then Skinner puts Greenberg in a headlock. Greenberg catches Skinner with a dropkick then Skinner bails. Skinner returns and shoves Greenberg down then shoves him outside. Skinner heads out to scare Jamison then spits on him then heads back inside and beats on Greenberg until hitting an inverted DDT for the win (3:18).
Thoughts: The main focus here was on the Rumble match. Skinner spitting on Jamison was the secondary focus.
New Foundation vs. The Executioners
Barry Hardy & Duane Gill are back under masks. Neidhart tosses one of the Executioners then avoids a clothesline from Executioner #2. Owen tags and hits a dropkick then an enziguiri as the announcers talk about the Royal Rumble. Heenan tells us that Neidhart went to Bret Hart for help after the Beverly Brothers attack and Bret said he was too busy being Intercontinental Champion and recommended Owen. The New Foundation stay in control then use a Rocket Launcher for the win as Owen pinned both of the Executioners (3:06).
Thoughts: We now got the story as to how Owen teamed with Neidhart. Owen continues to impress.
Gene Okerlund welcomes The Mountie & Jimmy Hart to the interview platform. They are not happy over Bret Hart being named the 1991 Wrestler of the Year. Mountie then recalls shocking Bret, calling him a “greaseball,” then says it was a real bad year for the WWF if Bret got the award. Mountie then tells Bret he’ll take away the Intercontinental Title and everyone will know him as the “Excellence of Electrocution.” Heenan then chimes in that Flair should have won that award but that he doesn’t need it to begin with. I love the “Excellence of Electrocution” line as The Mountie’s feud against Bret continues.
Brian Donahue vs. “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka
Heenan asks Gorilla is thoughts on the Royal Rumble competitors. Donahue lands some shots in the corner then uses a front facelock. Snuka fights back then we hear from him in an insert promo wishing us all a Merry Christmas as the announcers still discuss the announced competitors. Snuka stays in control then hits the Superfly Splash for the win (3:00). Heenan is then mad that Gorilla knows about more competitors being announced before he did.
Thoughts: I guess they trotted out Snuka to show that he was still with the company and did not leave for Herb Abrams’ UWF.
We learn that Ted DiBiase, Repo Man, and Skinner are in the Rumble match.
Nasty Boys vs. Jason Hedding & Glen Ruth
The Nasty Boys beat on Ruth to start. We then hear from The Nasty Boys & Hart in an insert promo as they make fun of Santa and promise to “nasticize” him as they are now beating on Hedding. Heenan tells us he’s always wanted to manage the world champion but now that he is just a financial advisor he still would like to do that for the champion and wants to bring Flair to new heights. Nasty Boys stay in control then put Hedding away with an running powerslam/elbow drop combo (3:06).
Thoughts: They had the Nasty Boys heel on Santa for heat as Christmas was just a few days away.
In action next week are El Matador, IRS, Sgt. Slaughter & Hacksaw Jim Duggan, and Ric Flair. Plus, Jake Roberts as guest on the “Barber Shop” and more!
Final Thoughts: The exclusive segment here was The Mountie interview, which was entertaining. The rest of the show was hyping the Rumble, specifically Flair since Heenan was on commentary.
