WWF Wrestling Challenge – December 8th, 1991

December 8, 1991

From the Springfield Civic Center in Springfield, MA

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan. The two say that Jack Tunney will address the controversy from This Tuesday in Texas.

In action this week are Big Bossman, Jake Roberts, and Sgt. Slaughter & Jim Duggan. Plus, comments from The Undertaker and Ric Flair.

El Matador vs. Brooklyn Brawler

The announcers talk about This Tuesday in Texas as Matador works over Brawler. Gorilla notes zero improvement in Brawler over the past six months then Brawler starts hammering and biting away. Matador sidesteps Brawler, who spills outside, then heads out for some punches. Back inside, Matador takes down Brawler and works the arm as we hear Matador in an insert promo calling out Ted DiBiase. Matador stays in control then uses the El Paso de la Muerte for the win (2:35).

Thoughts: More hype for the DiBiase/Matador feud while the announcers talk about the  This Tuesday in Texas PPV.

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. This is the announcement from Tunney where he vacated the World Heavyweight Title and put it on the line at the Royal Rumble.

Ric Flair w/ Mr. Perfect vs. Phil Apollo

The announcers talk about Tunney’s statement as Gorilla wants Heenan to go ringside. Flair holds up the NWA World Heavyweight Title as that image is distorted. Flair beats the crap out of Apollo as the announcers bicker about Tunney. We then hear from Flair & Perfect in an insert promo where Flair says while the WWF World Heavyweight Title is not as prestigious as his belt, he will still win the Royal Rumble if he enters the match and that title will not be distorted. Flair stays in control as the announcers switch over to the Flair/Piper feud then Flair uses the figure four and gets the win (3:44). After the match, Flair yanks a Hogan sign from the crowd then takes it inside and stomps it before tossing it back. Gorilla then says Flair could get his hands on the title at the Rumble.

Thoughts: They put over Flair as a legitimate threat to win the title at the Rumble as Flair also knocked the WWF title in the process.

We see The Bushwhackers playing the “WrestleMania Challenge” game for Nintendo.

Mark Thomas vs. Jake “The Snake” Roberts

Thomas is jacked. Gorilla says he has a hunch the Jake/Randy Savage feud is just beginning. Jake beats down Thomas as Gorilla plugs a WWF Magazine article on Jake. The announcers talk about Jake’s cobra being banned from ringside as Jake stomps away. Jake stays in control as Heenan says Jake does whatever he has to do. Thomas fights back but runs into a clothesline then Jake hits the DDT for the win (2:40).

Thoughts: More talk of the Jake/Savage feud with the announcers putting over the fact Jake will do anything possible in order to come out on top.

Big Bossman vs. Mario Mancini

Bossman boots Mancini in the face as Gorilla hopes Flair is given the #1 entrant in the Royal Rumble should they accept him into the match. Bossman continues to beat down Mancini as the announcers talk about the Bossman/IRS feud. Bossman slaps around Mancini then put him away with a sidewalk slam (2:51). Gorilla says Bossman is looking forward to being accepted into the Rumble match.

Thoughts: Interesting to hear Gorilla speak about Flair on this show as he called him a threat to win the match and hoped he drew #1 in the match.

Royal Rumble Report with Gene Okerlund.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan & Sgt. Slaughter vs. Barry Hardy & Duane Gill

Heenan claims that Slaughter was crying backstage last week and makes fun of him for that. Slaughter & Duggan beat down their opponents as the announcers talk about other tag teams that could be part of the Rumble match. Heenan continues to make fun of Slaughter crying over getting his country back as Gorilla is interested to see how far he can go with Duggan. Slaughter beats on Gill as Duggan keeps chanting from the apron. Gorilla says Flair has yet to be accepted into the Rumble due to not having enough wins then Duggan hits Gill with the Three Point Stance for the win (4:04). Heenan is all flustered over what Gorilla said about Flair.

Thoughts: Per usual, Heenan was making fun of Duggan. However, Gorilla teasing Heenan that Flair might not have enough wins to qualify for the Rumble match was fun.

Repo Man vs. Bill Pierce

Repo Man destroys Pierce as Heenan makes fun of Mike McGuirk. We then hear from Repo Man in an insert promo telling Virgil he will repossess his career as he continues to beat down Pierce. Repo Man now works over the leg then uses a grapevine for the win (3:16). After the match, Repo Man hangs Pierce by his feet as Gorilla continues to tease Heenan about the amount of wins needed to enter the Rumble match.

Thoughts: The commentary about Flair was fun as they are pushing the Repo Man/Virgil feud for the lower midcard.

Next week in action are Bret Hart, Ted DiBiase, Legion of Doom, and The Undertaker.

Final Thoughts: All of the major stuff shown here was already seen on Superstars. The most interesting thing on this show though was on commentary when it came to Flair. It is a lot more interesting in retrospect than at the time but still something to keep an eye on as we head toward the Royal Rumble.
