From the Portland Civic Center in Portland, ME
Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan, and Jim Neidhart
In action this week are Legion of Doom, British Bulldog, and Ted DiBiase. Plus, comments from Jake Roberts and Sgt. Slaughter as guest on the “Barber Shop.”
Legion of Doom vs. Kerry Davis & Bob Wiseman
The LoD attack their opponents before the bell. They work over Davis for a bit as Heenan says since Nasty Boys have a manager they’ll win at SummerSlam. We hear from the Nasty Boys in an insert promo as they say SummerSlam will be the LoD’s last trip to “Nasty Town.” Wiseman tags in and gets destroyed until the LoD put him away with the Doomsday Device (2:45).
Thoughts: More hype for the SummerSlam Tag Team Title match.
WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. Same as “Superstars” where they replayed Jake Roberts turning on the Ultimate Warrior.
Big Bully Busick w/ Harvey Whippleman vs. Mario Mancini
This is the debut for both Busick & Whippleman. Busick beats on Mancini as we hear from Whippleman & Busick as Whippleman says he’ll take anything he wants in the WWF while Busick says the WWF now has a real bully. Busick then hits Mancini with a powerslam before putting him away with the stump puller (1:16).
Thoughts: With a random debut without build taking place on Challenge it usually means there are no real plans for you other than lower midcarder. This was really more about establishing Whippleman as a manager than Busick as a character. Busick did nothing to impress but did at least have the look down pat. Whippleman did fine I thought. He came off as someone you could easily hate.
“Bodybuilding Lifestyles” magazine with Mike Christian on the cover is shown.
Texas Tornado vs. Paul Perez
Heenan talks about Ric Flair still being under contract to another organization but should he come here to the WWF he’ll have the inside track. Tornado sweeps Perez as Gorilla tells us to order SummerSlam on PPV. Tornado stays in control as Gorilla talks about Warlord and Power & Glory while accusing Power & Glory of having ego problems and not listening to Slick then Tornado uses the Tornado Punch for the win (1:40).
Thoughts: Interesting stuff about Power & Glory having ego problems and not listening to Slick. This all sounds like a split to me. Anyway, most of the focus was on Flair as Tornado continues to drop down the card.
Beverly Brothers w/ Coach vs. Barry Hardy & Duane Gill
The announcers talk about the Savage/Elizabeth wedding, specifically where they are going on their honeymoon. The Beverly Brothers beat on Hardy as Gorilla says they are in love with themselves. Gill tags in and gets pie-faced twice by Beau while Coach keeps screaming and blowing his whistle then the Beverly Brothers hit Gill with their finisher, called the “Shaker Heights Spike” by Heenan (2:11).
Thoughts: The Beverly Brothers finisher officially gets a name but the act is still ice cold and Coach is not helping. The pairing does not make sense. The Beverly Brothers are slowly becoming more conceited so that is something to look out for going forward.
British Bulldog vs. Dave Millson
Millson has quite the hairstyle. The announcers talk about the Intercontinental Title match at SummerSlam as Bulldog works over Millson. Bulldog then hits a delayed vertical suplex before using the running powerslam for the win (1:42).
Thoughts: Funny how they talk about the IC Title match at SummerSlam during Bulldog’s match since Bulldog’s feud with Perfect was aborted due to the latter’s injury.
Barber Shop with guests Sgt. Slaughter, Gen. Adnan, and Col. Mustafa. Slaughter tells us a joke about Ray Charles being Beefcake’s barber then addresses his opponents at SummerSlam, Hulk Hogan & Ultimate Warrior by saying they are no threat and addresses Sid Justice by saying he’s not a man who would hang around with losers and will have to count the shoulders down of eitehr Hogan & Warrior and after that might join the corps. Still cannot buy the Triangle of Terror as a main event faction.
“Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase w/ Sensational Sherri vs. Phil Apollo
DiBiase suplexes Apollo then taunts the crowd. Sherri yells into the camera then we hear from Virgil in an insert promo about how he will be the Million Dollar Champion. DiBiase stays in control then puts Apollo away with the Million Dollar Dream (1:47).
Thoughts: Just some more hype for the Virgil/DiBiase match at SummerSlam.
The announcers close out the show with some final SummerSlam hype.
Final Thoughts: We got a new wrestler/manager debut and a whole lot of SummerSlam hype as the show is just one day away.
Tomorrow will be my SummerSlam recap.
