WWF Superstars of Wrestling – August 3rd, 1991

August 3, 1991

From the Northlands Coliseum in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Your hosts are Vince McMahon, Roddy Piper, and Randy Savage

This week, we will have an interview with Hulk Hogan & Ultimate Warrior. In action are The Undertaker, Sgt. Slaughter, The Dragon, and The Natural Disasters.

The Rockers vs. Ed Moretti & Mike Rosetti

Rosetti is sporting a Penn State singlet. Vince & Piper ask Savage abut his wedding as The Rockers take control of the match. The now grill Savage about his bachelor party and honeymoon as Piper jokes The Rockers are invited but Savage says they are too good looking to attend does not want good looking people to be there then invites Vince and Piper. The Rockers remain in control then Shawn press slams Marty on top of Rosetti for the win (2:20).

Thoughts: At this time, Shawn hurt his back. Jim Powers replaced him at house shows but Shawn would return at the next set of TV tapings.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We go back to last week when Jake Roberts went on the Funeral Parlor to say he will show the Ultimate Warrior how to deal with darkness. After that we are shown a video of Jake teaching Warrior. We get some dark ominous tones as Warrior is sitting in a casket with Jake trying to teach Warrior. Jake wants Warrior to trust him then has him breath in order to relax so he can have the casket door shut. Warrior grunts loudly as we are shown flashbacks of Warrior being freed from the casket Undertaker locked him in a few months ago. Jake shuts the door and locks the casket as Warrior yells. Jake wants Warrior to feel the darkness then laughs and opens it up after a bit as Warrior sits up after Jake says the look of fear is in his eyes. Warrior then turns his head and stares into the camera. Okerlund believes that Jake’s help will prepare Warrior. The tone of this segment was darker than just about anything that had aired on WWF TV at this point. I liked this segment and Jake was great but even as a 9 year old watching in real time it was quite evident Jake was going to turn on Warrior. They tipped that off too much on commentary as we will see during the coming weeks.

Brooklyn Brawler vs. The Dragon

Vince and Piper seemingly trust Jake after being leery at first but Savage is not sure. Brawler pulls up after an Irish whip but runs into a chop. Dragon stays on the attack before hitting a flying body press for the win (0:55). Savage says this is a big win for The Dragon.

Thoughts: Most of the focus was on the Warrior/Jake segment. At this time in the Observer it was reported that Dragon would be feuding with Skinner after SummerSlam. When Dragon returned he claimed Vince told him he would get a push. I don’t think this is what Dragon had in mind and he’d leave the company in a few months.

The Natural Disasters w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Stan Saxson & Doug Carson

The Natural Disasters beat on Saxson to start. They are later shown in an insert promo calling out The Bushwhackers and Andre the Giant for their match at SummerSlam. The Disasters now beat on Carson as Savage is getting teased over who is his best man. Carson gets dumped outside then the Disasters put Saxson away with a splash combo (2:13).

Thoughts: Basic hype for the Natural Disasters/Bushwhackers match at SummerSlam. It’s going to take a lot more than that to get people to care though.

Okerlund now welcomes Hulk Hogan & Ultimate Warrior to the interview platform. Savage brings up how these two met at WrestleMania VI and wonders how they can be partners at SummerSlam. Hogan & Warrior talk about the Hulkamaniacs & Warriors being on the same page since WrestleMania VI and will wipe out the Triangle of Terror. Okerlund asks them about Sid Justice, who comes, and how they’ll deal with him. Sid shakes their hands then raises their arms. Sid is asked about Slaughter trying to persuade him to join their “Corps of Destruction” and how it may not be a handicap match after all. Sid gets pissed and says he might be partial towards them or might not but everyone should be assured that he is there at SummerSlam to see that justice will be served. A few things. First, after watching the Warrior earlier with Jake and how much they played up the fact he was still effected by being locked in the coffin he was his basic self here with Hogan. Warrior just gave his usual generic promo. Sid coming out to say he was only here to serve justice was a way to once again keep fans guessing whether or not he was going to be heel or face but the fact he raised these guys arms while telling off Slaughter leads you to believe he will be a face.

The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer vs. Brian Jewel

Vince wants to know where Undertaker will be at SummerSlam. Undertaker beats on Jewel as Paul Bearer & The Undertaker are in an insert promo warning Jake to stay out of their business or else he’ll suffer “grave” consequences. Undertaker stays in control of the match then hits a tombstone for the win (1:47). After the match, Vince tells us that there is a rumor Jake will be taking the Ultimate Warrior to a cemetery next week.

Thoughts: The big news is that we are getting another Jake/Warrior training segment next week. They are also trying to play up that their might be a Jake/Undertaker feud coming after SummerSlam.

SummerSlam Report with Okerlund. The new announced match is Legion of Doom vs. Nasty Boys for the Tag Team Titles with a “No Disqualification, No Count Out” stipulation.

Handicap Match: Sgt. Slaughter w/ Gen. Adnan & Col. Mustafa vs Larry Williams & Bob Jones

I guess Slaughter is going to be put in a disadvantage here in order to prepare for SummerSlam, where he will have a one-man advantage. Slaughter and his men jump Williams & Jones. Slaughter stays in control by himself until he puts Jones away with a Camel’s Clutch (2:07). After the match, Slaughter and his men stay on the attack then Slaughter & Mustafa use stereo Camel Clutches as Adnan smacks the other guys with his hat.

Thoughts: Its going to take a lot more than this to make fans think the Triangle of Terror has a chance to win at SummerSlam.

Next week in action are Irwin R. Schyster, Big Bossman, Ted DiBiase, and The Nasty Boys. Plus, more from Jake Roberts & Ultimate Warrior.

Final Thoughts: The Jake/Warrior segment was really good and we had Sid Justice come out to confront Warrior & Hogan. Plus, the news of a Tag Team title match added to SummerSlam as this was an action-packed edition of Superstars.
