WWF Superstars of Wrestling – June 29th, 1991

June 29, 1991

From the Tucson Convention Center in Tucson, AZ

Your hosts are Vince McMahon, Roddy Piper, and Randy Savage

In action this week are The Natural Disasters, The Dragon, Virgil, and the Texas Tornado. Plus, Sgt. Slaughter as guest on the “Funeral Parlor” and more comments on Sid Justice.

Big Bossman vs. The Intruder

The Intruder is Jesse Cortez under a mask. Bossman beats on The Intruder to start. Vince says The Intruder is The Invader’s brother as the announcers talk about the Bossman/Mountie feud. We hear from The Mountie in an insert promo calling out Bossman as Vince wants to know if Savage has been stressed out lately then Bossman puts Invader away with a sidewalk slam (2:03).

Thoughts: More hype for the Bossman/Mountie feud while the announcers continue to pry and answer out of Savage as to whether or not he is going to marry Elizabeth.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We see clips from “Prime Time Wrestling” with Elizabeth telling us she loves Savage. Okerlund says he’s asked Savage about the relationship to no avail but next week will be conducting a special interview with Elizabeth. And we have announced a segment to get us to tune in next week.

Larry Williams vs. The Berzerker w/ Mr. Fuji

Vince grills Savage about next week’s interview as Savage still refuses to answer. Berzerker listens to Fuji’s orders and beats on Williams. Berzerker thanks Fuji for his orders then hits a falling slam before tossing Williams outside and picking up the win via countout as Vince asks Savage if he will have the guts to propose to Elizabeth next week (2:24).

Thoughts: This was all about hyping the Savage interview for next week. Berzerker continues to flounder.

Texas Tornado vs. Louie Spicolli

Savage brings up how IRS wants to audit Piper as Vince says an audit does not automatically mean you are guilty. Piper says he pays his taxes and goes on a rant about “Irwin.” Tornado knocks Spicolli outside then hammers away before bringing him back inside. Tornado ducks a clothesline then comes back with a Tornado Punch for the win (2:38).

Thoughts: With house matches of Ted DiBiase & IRS vs. Piper & Virgil being promoted on Event Center segments they are going to have Piper/IRS feud on the side as well.

Bobby Allen & Larry Sampson vs. Natural Disasters w/ Jimmy Hart

Earthquake knees down Allen then stomps away. Vince reminds us that the Natural Disasters are backup for the Nasty Boys and that Typhoon felt rejected by the Hulkamaniacs and felt betrayed when Hogan eliminated him at the Rumble. Tugboat tags and beats on Sampson before hitting a splash then Earthquake tags and hits a sit-down splash for the win (2:38). Vince says he does not believe any team can beat the Natural Disasters.

Thoughts: They at least explained why Tugboat turned here on commentary. I liked the finishing move and the duo gives the Tag Team division monsters on the heel side.

Virgil vs. Randy Sharkey

Virgil leap frogs over Sharkey then lands a few jabs. Vince brings up the Virgilina segment from “Prime Time Wrestling” as Virgil looks into the camera and calls out Ted DiBiase. Sharkey is placed in the tree-of-woe then Virgil lands a few shots as Vince & Piper tease Savage again about getting married and having kids. Virgil stays in control then uses the Million Dollar Dream for the win (3:14).

Thoughts: More hype for the Virgil/DiBiase feud and the Savage marriage talk continues.

Funeral Parlor with guests Sgt. Slaughter, Gen. Adnan, and Col. Mustafa. Slaughter calls out Hogan for being “immortal slime” and the leader of “Pukeamania.” Slaughter then says with 4th of July around the corner there will not be fireworks for Hogan but rather some snap, crackle, and pop. Not a whole lot of heat for this promo as the feud has really run its course. Slaughter does not come off as a top heel.

An ad for SummerSlam airs.

Dale Wolfe vs. The Dragon

Wolfe lands a few shots but Dragon floats over on a suplex and stays in control. Vince brings up Elizabeth’s interview for next week as Piper calls it a great opportunity for Savage to propose. Dragon beats on Wolfe in the corner then chops him down before using a flying body press for the win (2:25).

Thoughts: Vince telegraphing what would happen next week on commentary was the sole highlight.

The Legion of Doom and Nasty Boys & Jimmy Hart put over Sid Justice. Instead of just putting Sid over they are now hinting as to whether or not he will be face or heel.

The Warlord w/ Slick vs. Larry Ludden

Vince says no one knows what will happen when Justice steps foot into the ring. Warlord beats down Ludden for a while as Vince says they’ll have even more fun with Savage next week. Warlord continues to beat on Ludden then uses a full nelson for the win (2:59).

Thoughts: More last minute hype for next week’s Savage interview. Its clear the Warlord is not part of any long-term plans.

Next week in action are The Rockers, Sgt. Slaughter, Jake Roberts, The Undertaker, and the featured match of Bret Hart vs. Haku. Plus, the special interview with Elizabeth as Vince & Piper once again tease Savage about proposing.

Final Thoughts: The big news is that Savage will have an interview next week where its all but a given he will propose to Elizabeth. Besides that, we saw the Natural Disasters make their debut as a team and they are building intrigue to see if Sid Justice will become a face or heel.
