WWF Superstars of Wrestling – March 2nd, 1991

March 2, 1991

From the Macon Coliseum in Macon, GA

Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Roddy Piper

This week, the Ultimate Warrior will be on the “Brother Love Show.” In action are Mr. Perfect, Jake Roberts, The Viking, The Rockers, and The Earthquake.

Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs. Terrence Blaylock

If Blaylock looks familiar its because he would later go on to become Mustafa Saed and team with New Jack as The Gangstas. We hear from Rick Martel in an insert promo as he says the biggest crime is having to cover his own face in the blindfold match at WrestleMania. Jake takes control early then puts Blaylock away with the DDT (1:04). After the match, Jake dumps Damien on top of Blaylock.

Thoughts: The Jake/Martel Blindfold Match hype continues. I do like how Martel is pissed because his face will be covered to play off of the model gimmick.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We are shown footage from last week’s “Wrestling Challenge” where Sgt. Slaughter & Gen. Adnan set fire to a Hulk Hogan poster. Okerlund calls it one of the most disgusting and despicable things he’s ever seen. We then see more of “Slaughter’s Rules” When he attacked and whipped a referee trying to help Dale Wolfe up after their match. Now, Hogan tells Slaughter he might as well dump a million barrels of oil on the Hulkamaniacs so they do not make it to WrestleMania then talks about the soliders fighting for our freedoms and how he’ll do anything to stop Slaughter. No wonder publications across the country were slamming this angle for poor taste. They were trying way, way too hard to drum up controversy based off of the war.  And it would only get worst.

Tom Landel vs. The Viking

Piper says that he wears a kilt and The Viking wears a dress. The Viking beats on Landel and yells “Huss.” We then hear from The Viking in an insert promo as he calls himself the type of guy who will get his hands on you and will conquer the WWF. The Viking drills Landel with a big boot as Vince notes there are many managers wanting to take a look at The Viking, who then tosses Landel outside and wins via countout (2:19). After the match, The Viking wipes out Landel with a pescado.

Thoughts: Without prior vignettes to hype his debut the crowds were silent for The Viking. And really, the whole thing was just too bizarre for this time period.

Okerlund is at Toys R Us with the Big Bossman in the same segment we saw last week on “Wrestling Challenge.”

The Rockers vs. Brooklyn Brawler & Jerry Oates

Piper puts over The Rockers match against the Orient Express at the Royal Rumble while Vince reminds him now Haku & Barbarian, their WrestleMania VII opponents, are “monsters.” Marty hits Oates with a crossbody after a criss-cross sequence for a two count. Heenan is with Barbarian & Haku in an insert promo calling his men “Brutality Specialists” and how they are better than “Tag Team Specialists.” Shawn hits Brawler with a neckbreaker and a delayed vertical suplex but Brawler comes back to rake the eyes. The Rockers then hit Oates with a double super kick then Marty hits a Rocker Dropper before The Rockers use a double flying fist drop for the win (2:38).

Thoughts: More hype for The Rockers vs. Haku & Barbarian WrestleMania match. Its built on speed vs. toughness.

Brother Love Show with guest the Ultimate Warrior. Brother Love is hamming it up on the introduction even more than usual here. And there is a good reason why. Warrior comes out and promises to finish and destroy Macho King Randy Savage. Warrior then says he will start ending his career right now then starts tearing down the set. Brother Love yells at Warrior then is chased through the curtains. Brother Love then runs out without his coat as Warrior tosses him into the ring . Warrior knocks him down then flattens him with a few clotheslines then hits the flying shoulder tackle. Warrior now hits a pair of splashes then stands over Brother Love, who gets taken out on a stretcher as Vince thinks we might be seeing a “has-been” in Love being taken away. And that’s how they wrote off Brother Love. According to Prichard himself, the reason the Brother Love character was written off was due to the fact he had to chose between being on the road with The Undertaker or stay in the office to do his duties because there was not time for both. Prichard chose to stay in the office but ended up butting heads with producer John Filippeli, who was brought in from NBC to help with the WBF and other things. Prichard denied he was let go due to substance abuse issues and said he was “let go” due to conflict with Filippeli.

Mr. Perfect w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Pez Whatley

Whatley uses a slam and a dropkick then a pissed off Perfect bails. Perfect heads back in and beats down Whatley as we hear him in an insert promo promising to leave WrestleMania as the Intercontinental Champion. Perfect stays in control then hits the Perfect Plex for the win (2:32).

Thoughts: Just some more hype for the Perfect/Bossman match at WrestleMania.

WrestleMania Report with Gene Okerlund. Among the promos we saw the Queen of England, who is picking The Warlord to defeat Davey Boy Smith at WrestleMania. Okerlund also said that all of the tickets are gone in Los Angeles.

Vignette for Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat airs.

Earthquake w/ Jimmy Hart vs. William Ford

Ford lands a few punches but Earthquake cuts him off. Earthquake dropkicks Ford then taunts the crowd as we hear from Greg Valentine in an insert promo as he promises to hammer Earthquake right off of the Ricter Scale. Earthquake then uses a powerslam before putting Ford away with a sit-down splash (1:22). After the match, Earthquake tries to hit another splash but this masked man runs in and beats down Earthquake before leaving as the announcers do not know his name.

Thoughts: The masked man once again runs out and attacks Earthquake like he did last week on “Wrestling Challenge.”

Next week in action are Haku & Barbarian, Big Bossman, The Mountie, Hart Foundation, and we will see a special interview with Sgt. Slaughter. We then see a replay of the masked man laying out Earthquake as Vince notes we might see him next week too.

Final Thoughts: Notable show for being Brother Love’s last appearance of this run. We also saw the masked man run out again as this appears to be an angle that will develop past WrestleMania (although it never happened). Anyway, more WrestleMania hype as the PPV is just three weeks away.
