WWF Superstars of Wrestling – February 23, 1991

February 23, 1991

From the Macon Coliseum in Macon, GA

Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Roddy Piper

This week in action are Sgt. Slaughter, Big Bossman, Davey Boy Smith, and The Undertaker. Plus, Macho King Randy Savage on the “Brother Love Show” and more.

Big Bossman vs. Alan Martin

Martin lands a few shots but walks into a dropkick. We hear from The Mountie in an insert promo as he says he’ll be the only authority in the WWF after Mr. Perfect beats Bossman at WrestleMania. Bossman stays in control then catches Martin with a spinebuster for the win (1:08). After the match, Martin is cuffed to the ropes.

Thoughts: Its now clear what The Mountie will be doing after WrestleMania. It also tells us Perfect will likely be retaining the Intercontinental Title at WrestleMania.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This is about the Nasty Boys winning last week’s Tag Team Battle Royal with the right to face Hart Foundation for the Tag Team Titles at WrestleMania. We also learn that the Legion of Doom will face Power & Glory at WrestleMania based off of that same battle royal where Power & Glory cost LoD the match. We then hear from Power & Glory and Legion of Doom as they hype up the match. Really, the LoD have been a disappointment so far with a WrestleMania match in the lower card after a dud of a feud with Demolition.

The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer vs. Tommy Angel

Undertaker hammers away to start. He then catches Angel with a spinebuster as we hear from Undertaker in an insert promo with Bearer as he tells Jimmy Snuka “ashes to ashes, dust to dust.” Undertaker stays in control and puts Angel away with the Tombstone (2:04). After the match, Undertaker reaches inside of a black back and sprinkles clay in top of Angel.

Thoughts: They are starting to get over Undertaker’s post match routine of sprinkling clay/dirt on top of his opponents. I think even the young kids in awe of his presence in the crowd realize that Snuka has zero chance against Undertaker at WrestleMania.

Okerlund is inside of Toys R Us to shill the newest WWF merchandise. He is joined by Butch, who wants to find an action figure of Luke. He has Okerlund help him but it was a trick as Luke was hiding behind a bunch of Wrestling Buddies. Even though they were useless in the ring at this point The Bushwhackers did a fantastic job with the gimmick.

Haku w/ Bobby Heenan & Ted DiBiase vs. Virgil w/ Roddy Piper

Virgil fires away in the corner then takes Haku over with a hip toss. Haku bails after a clothesline as Piper pumps up the crowd then heads inside and fails at a turnbuckle smash. Virgil gets dumped outside where he is between DiBiase and Piper, who are both yelling. Piper encourages Virgil to get inside and he does. Haku takes Virgil down with a clothesline before hitting a suplex but Piper distracts Haku from the apron. Haku yells at Piper but as that happens Virgil rolls him up from behind for the win (3:38) 1/2*. After the match, Piper invites DiBiase back inside but DiBiase opts to retreat.

Thoughts: The match wasn’t good at all but this was about putting over Virgil for his match at WrestleMania. He needed a win to make him appear credible and they did this by letting Haku maintain some credibility in the process. The Piper/Virgil appearing has started off strong.

“British Bulldog” Davey Boy Smith vs. Mike Wallace

We are shown a kid in the crowd holding up a box of Hulk Hogan vitamins then Vince says we might hear from the Queen of England soon. Piper returns to commentary and gloats about Virgil’s win as Vince talks about Davey’s article about his triceps as part of “Bodybuilding Lifestyles” magazine. Davey overpowers Wallace then puts him away with a running powerslam (1:31).

Thoughts: Davey’s strong push is based off his physique. Vince also mentioned the Queen of England as this was a bit that lasted a few weeks.

Brother Love Show with guests Macho King Randy Savage & Queen Sherri. Savage promises to take away the last ounce of pride the Ultimate Warrior has when he ends his career. Sherri then says when Savage ends Warrior’s career, The Undertaker & Paul Bearer will stand beside Warrior and lower his career into the ground where it belongs. Brother Love lets us know Undertaker has an epithet prepared for Warrior and reads it off as Savage & Sherri celebrate. They really set up for an Undertaker/Warrior feud after WrestleMania and it tells you Savage will be losing the match.

WrestleMania VII Report with Gene Okerlund. We find out about new matches such as Demolition vs. Tenryu & Kitao, Tito Santana vs. The Mountie, and The Rockers vs. Haku & Barbarian, which was first announced on “Prime Time Wrestling.”

A vignette for Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat airs as he continues to breath fire.

Sgt. Slaughter w/ Gen. Adnan vs. Dale Wolfe

Vince tells us Slaughter will show us his own set of “rules” in the coming weeks. Adnan distracts the ref as Slaughter beats on Wolfe with his helmet. Slaughter stays on the attack and hits a gutbuster then a front suplex before the Camel’s Clutch gets the win (1:28). Slaughter stomps on Wolfe after the match then grabs a chair and uses that on his back. Medics come out after this with a stretcher but Slaughter attacks them too.

Thoughts: They are getting as much heat as possible on Slaughter to sell the WrestleMania main event. Keep in mind about these “rules” going forward.

Next week in action are The Earthquake, The Rockers, The Viking, Jake Roberts, and Mr. Perfect. Plus, the Ultimate Warrior as guest on the “Brother Love Show” and Sgt. Slaughter will be on the “WrestleMania Report.”

Final Thoughts: The final matches on the WrestleMania card have been set. We also got a peak of the company’s post WrestleMania plans too. And the mega push of Slaughter continues as we are a month away from the PPV.
