WWF Wrestling Challenge – February 10th, 1991

February 10, 1991

From the UTC Arena in Chattanooga, TN

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan

This week, we will see the Legion of Doom vs. Demolition. Also in action are The Undertaker, Big Bossman, and the Texas Tornado.

The Undertaker w/ Brother Love vs. Allen Reynolds

The camera cuts to fans who are shocked by the Undertaker’s appearance. Undertaker beats the crap out of Reynolds as Brother Love is screaming from ringside. Gorilla shows us an insert of the “WWF Magazine” article on Undertaker, who stays in control. Undertaker catches Reynolds with a chokeslam after an Irish whip sequence and soon after that he hits the Tombstone for the win (2:08).

Thoughts: They continue to build up the Undertaker, who is having no problem getting over. The cuts to fans shocked looks in the crowd certainly helps with Undertaker’s mystique.

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. The news of Macho King Randy Savage and the Ultimate Warrior putting their careers on the line at WrestleMania VII is the focus of the segment.

Texas Tornado vs. Dale Wolfe

The announcers talk about the news of Savage/Warrior as Heenan says they are both making a huge mistake. We hear from Tornado in an insert promo telling Ted DiBiase he cannot be bought but will give him a “promissory note” for free. The announcers continue to talk about Savage/Warrior as Tornado beats on Wolfe in the corner. Tornado dumps Wolfe outside as Heenan cannot understand how someone from Texas can be popular and makes fun of the state. Tornado then puts Wolfe away with the Tornado Punch (2:51).

Thoughts:¬†Some more hype for the Tornado/DiBiase feud which isnt doing any favors for Tornado because DiBiase’s feud with Virgil is what the fans want to see.

The Warlord w/ Slick vs. Pez Whatley

The announcers put over Warlord’s full nelson. We see Davey Boy Smith in an insert who says he will break the full nelson then Gorilla tells us there will in fact be a “Full Nelson Challenge” for next week. Heenan believes the challenge will result in a broken neck for someone as Warlord beats on Whatley until he uses the full nelson for the win (2:03).

Thoughts: The big news here is the Full Nelson Challenge set for next week.

WrestleMania VII ad voiced over by Gene Okerlund saying it will take place in Los Angeles.

Okerlund brings out Rick Martel to the interview platform. He brings up a “WWF Magazine” article with a feature on Martel’s fashion as Martel talks about that for a while. Martel gloats about signing a contract to face Jake Roberts at WrestleMania. Okerlund then asks if he read the fine print as Martel laughs and says the only thing fine that he knows is fashion, women, and dining. Okerlund then asks if he is blind as Martel gets pissed then vows to beat Jake at WrestleMania before leaving. They had this segment to show Martel having no clue he signed a contract for a Blindfold Match at WrestleMania and set up for that announcement in the WrestleMania Report for fans who did not see “Superstars of Wrestling.”

Big Bossman vs. Doug Vines

The announcers talk about the previous segment as Gorilla hints at knowing what Okerlund reference about with regards to the contract Martel signed. Bossman overpowers Vines with ease as Heenan taunts him on commentary. Gorilla brings up how Mr. Perfect is the only guy left in the Heenan Family Bossman has yet to beat then Bossman hits a spinebuster for the win (2:08).

Thoughts: The Bossman/Perfect feud is based off of Bossman only having one member left in the Heenan Family to go through before getting his hands on Heenan. Problem was the Heenan/Bossman feud was played out and has dragged out since August.

WrestleMania VII Report with Gene Okerlund.

Demolition w/ Mr. Fuji vs. Legion of Doom

Gorilla mentions how Tugboat and Undertaker would face off at WrestleMania despite the fact we saw on the WM Report that Taker was facing Snuka. In his shoot interview with RF Video, Tugboat claimed he was never told about the possibility of facing Taker at WrestleMania. Demolition beat on Hawk to start. Hawk comes back with a double clothesline then the match breaks down. Things settle as Crush beats on Hawk. Smash now hammers away while calling Hawk a “punk.” Demolition stay in control but Hawk escapes and tags out as Animal runs wild. Animal floats over on a double back suplex attempt and hits a double clothesline. He then tosses Crush outside and LoD set up for the Doomsday Device but Fuji makes the save. LoD then try to hit Fuji with the Doomsday Device but Demolition make the save. The match is a mess now as Demolition roll outside then the ref awards the match to LoD due to Fuji’s interference (4:14) 1/2*.

Thoughts: Not good and there was really no reason to protect Demolition from getting pinned at this point. The gimmick was toast.

Next week, we have an interview with Roddy Piper & Virgil and a full nelson challenge between Warlord and Davey Boy Smith. In action are Mr. Perfect, Jake Roberts, and Sgt. Slaughter.

Final Thoughts: The featured match was not good but we at least get another exclusive segment next week in the Full Nelson Challenge. I did like the Martel interview to set up for the Blindfold Match stipulation as the march towards WrestleMania VII continues.
