WWF Superstars of Wrestling – January 26th, 1991

January 26, 1991

From the Von Braun Civic Center in Huntsville, AL

Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Roddy Piper

The show starts with both announcers disgusted over Sgt. Slaughter winning the World Heavyweight Championship.

We see clips of the Ultimate Warrior vs. Slaughter title match complete with Sherri trying to seduce Warrior into giving Savage a title shot. We get over ten minutes of footage shown from the Rumble.

Reno Riggins vs. The Mountie w/ Jimmy Hart

This is The Mountie’s first match on syndicated TV. The Mountie beats on Riggins as Vince credits Piper as to why Virgil stood up to Ted DiBiase. We then hear from The Mountie in an insert promo saying he is the only law & order and justice in the WWF then he puts Riggins away with a two-handed chokeslam (2:06). After the match, Vince alerts us that this coming Friday we will see Slaughter’s first title defense and President Jack Tunney will name Slaughter’s WrestleMania opponent. The Mountie then hits Riggins with his shock stick.

Thoughts: The action was forgettable but the big news was learning there is a show Friday night and on that show we will find out who will face Slaughter for the title at WrestleMania.

Doug Vines & Cleo Reed vs. Legion of Doom

The LoD beat down their opponents as Vince said they started bodybuilding as teenagers in order to segue into the “Bodybuilding Lifestyles” magazine article on techniques for teenagers. The LoD stay in control then put Reed away with the Doomsday Device as Vince puts over their match this Friday against The Orient Express (2:19).

Thoughts: More plugs for “Bodybuilding Lifestyles” magazines as Vince is trying hard to get this over. The match was a showcase for LoD to build them up for their match this Friday on “The Main Event.”

We see the clips of fans from the Royal Rumble where they thank those serving overseas in the Middle East. After that we see Hogan’s post match celebration at the Rumble where he waves the American flag. Vince says this was the most memorable thing on the show which should tell you just how much the company is going to push this moment.

Joe Turner vs. Davey Boy Smith

Vince lets us that Tunney is considering using the instant replay rule like they do in the NFL. Vince says if they did, Warrior would still be the champion. Davey overpowers Turner then we hear from Warlord & Slick in an insert promo as Warlord promises to put Davey away with his full nelson. Davey stays in control of the match then hits a running powerslam for the win (2:22).

Thoughts: They continue to build up Davey’s feud with Warlord and we learn about the possibility of instant replay being added to the WWF as the company tackles another relevant topical issue.

A WrestleMania VII ad airs.

“The Model” Rick Martel vs. Allan Reynolds

The announcers speculate who might be the #1 contender and throw out Savage, Warrior, and Hogan as possibilities. Vince points out how Hogan never got his rematch after losing at WrestleMania VI. Martel beats on Reynolds then we hear him in an insert promo telling us that Arrogance is even more arrogant than ever and not “hypoallergenic.” Vince says Slaughter will face Jim Duggan Friday night as Martel puts Reynolds away with the Boston Crab (1:43).

Thoughts: The announcers spent the match putting over the three possible choices to face Slaughter at WrestleMania. The Martel/Jake feud continues with Martel having a “new” Arrogance as its clear they are starting to run out of steam in order to keep that going.

The announcers plug Friday night’s title match. We then hear from Duggan, who says its not about anything other than the American flag and puts over the U.S. Soldiers. He then calls out Slaughter as a traitor.

Next week, Mr. Perfect will defend the Intercontinental Title against Texas Tornado

Final Thoughts: A newsworthy show. We saw the big angles from the Rumble match and hyped up “The Main Event” show with the big news of President Tunney revealing who will face Slaughter at WrestleMania. And, next week we get a Intercontinental Title match since that belt was not defended at the PPV nor will be Friday night. We will continue to build towards WrestleMania over the next several weeks.
