WWF Wrestling Challenge – December 30th, 1990

December 30, 1990

From the West Palm Beach Auditorium in West Palm Beach, FL

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan

This week, we have an interview with Dusty & Dustin Rhodes. In action are Rick Martel, The Rockers, Texas Tornado, and The Barbarian

The Rockers vs. JT Smith & Tom Stone

Heenan tells Gorilla that Mr. Fuji knows Kato from way back as Gorilla scoffs at his comment. The Rockers work over Smith to start. Smith catches Shawn with a dropkick but misses a second attempt as The Rockers hit him with a double-team move. Stone is in and lands a few shots on Marty but runs into a back elbow smash. The Rockers stay in control as we hear from Fuji & The Orient Express as they promise to accomplish their mission at the Royal Rumble. Marty then hits Stone with a Rocker Dropper and The Rockers hit a Rocket Launcher for the win (3:36).

Thoughts: Hype for The Rockers/Orient Express match at the Rumble.

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. This week’s report shows us Sgt. Slaughter receiving his special boots from Sadaam Hussein. Slaughter & Gen. Adnan are now shown with Slaughter saying he will defeat Warrior at the Royal Rumble. They really pushed these boots a lot on TV leading up to the match. They mention it each time while Slaughter obsesses over them.

The Barbarian w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Don Steel

Gorilla tells us that Andre the Giant will not be in the Royal Rumble due to an injury suffered in “The Orient.” Barbarian destroy Steel then we hear from the Big Bossman in an insert promo telling Heenan he’ll go through everyone in his way to get to him as Barbarian puts Steel away with a big boot (1:34).

Thoughts: Some hype for the Barbarian/Bossman match at the Rumble with Barbarian fighting to protect his manager.

“The Model” Rick Martel vs. Danny Brazil

Gorilla reminds Heenan that Andre knocked him around at WrestleMania while Heenan says Andre is not showing up because he is afraid to deal with him. Martel toys with Brazil as the crowd chants for Jake Roberts. Martel tosses Brazil outside then we hear from him in an insert promo telling Jake he cannot wait to get his hands on him and that he will not be looking forward to 1991. Martel beats on Brazil then puts him away with a Boston Crab (2:20).

Thoughts: Martel acting like a dick while poking fun at Jake’s vision problems was always great. This remains among the best current feuds in the company, probably even the best.

We see a flashback from a few weeks ago were Ted DiBiase tried to buy off Dustin Rhodes on the “Brother Love Show,” leading to an attack. They did not show Texas Tornado making the save but did highlight DiBiase crapping all over his bodyguard Virgil.

Gene Okerlund welcomes Dusty & Dustin Rhodes to the interview platform. Okerlund talks to Dusty about working with his son. Dusty says he’s a proud daddy and puts that over as Dustin tells us he is also proud himself to follow in his dad’s footsteps. He’s still trying to impersonate his dad and its not working. Dusty then says the blood between himself and his son is strong while the bond between DiBiase & Virgil is paper thin like money.

The vignette where DiBiase makes Virgil massage his toes is shown to further highlight how awful DiBiase is treating his bodyguard.

Texas Tornado vs. Black Bart

Tornado hammers away to start and tosses Bart outside before taking off his jacket. Tornado knocks Bart down then is shown in an insert promo saying he will start off the year by winning the Royal Rumble before putting Bart away with the Tornado Punch (1:21).

Thoughts: Just generic Rumble match hype from Tornado, who will feud with DiBiase after the Rumble.

Royal Rumble Report with Gene Okerlund

Kevin Green & Pat Armstrong vs. Power & Glory w/ Slick

Roma is shown in an insert promo putting over his body and how it will help him win the Rumble. Power & Glory beat on Armstrong to start. Armstrong avoids an attack and follows with a pair of dropkicks on Hercules. Armstrong runs into a clothesline then Roma hits Armstrong with a pair of backbreakers then a running powerslam. Green tags and gets in some offense but Roma catches him with a dropkick then Power & Glory neutralize him until they hit the Power Plex for the win (3:57).

Thoughts: More Rumble hype here from Power & Glory as their feud with the Hart Foundation was not mentioned.

Next week in action are Jake Roberts, Hart Foundation, The Undertaker, Nasty Boys, and Sgt. Slaughter.

Final Thoughts: Nothing new on this show. The only exclusive thing was an interview with The Rhodes family as its going to be generic Rumble hype on Challenge until the PPV.

That concludes 1990 WWF and don’t worry because I am continuing through 1991.
