WWF Wrestling Challenge – September 16, 1990

September 16, 1990

From the Wheeling Civic Center in Wheeling, WV

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan

In action this week are Earthquake, Texas Tornado, Demolition, Jake Roberts, and Akeem.

Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs. Brian Costello

Costello attacks Jake from behind then stays on the attack. Jake then catches Costello with a slam then does it again before working the arm. Jake knocks Costello off of the apron then rolls him back inside and sets him up for the DDT and the win (1:51). After the match, Jake dumps Damien on top of Costello

Thoughts: Not much here to talk about since Bad News quit the company Jake is left without a feud.

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. This is the same as the “WWF Update” segment from “Superstars of Wrestling” that focuses on last week’s Queen Sherri/Ultimate Warrior confrontation on the “Brother Love Show.”

Ron Cumberledge vs. Akeem w/ Slick

Akeem beats on Cumberledge then chokes him out. Slick yells at Cumberledge for being a “dummy” as Akeem stays in control until he hits a splash for the win (1:11).

Thoughts: An easy win for Akeem, who hasn’t been doing much of anything for the past several months. He would leave the company in a few weeks.

Clips of Shawn Michaels’ knee getting injured by Power & Glory at SummerSlam.

Marty Jannetty w/ Shawn Michaels vs. Dale Wolfe

Shawn comes out to the ring on crutches. Marty works over Wolfe until he is hit with a back elbow smash. Marty comes back with a hip toss as Heenan said he’s lost without his partner. We then hear from Power & Glory with Slick as they tell Marty he’s next. Back to the match as Marty stays in control as Heenan makes more jokes about Bossman’s mother. Wolfe lands a few shots but eats elbow on a charge then Marty hits a Rocker Dropper before a flying fist drop gets the win (2:54).

Thoughts: With Shawn out of action, Marty will be wrestling in singles matches as Shawn accompanies him on crutches.

Earthquake w/ Jimmy Hart & Dino Bravo vs. Sonny Blaze

Heenan makes more jokes about Bossman’s mother as Earthquake overpowers Blaze. Heenan claims that Bossman’s mom is over 700 lbs as Earthquake hits a powerslam then an elbow drop before the sit-down splash gets the win (1:53). After the match, Earthquake hits another splash before Blaze is taken out on a stretcher.

Thoughts: Earthquake destroys another opponent as Heenan continues to make fun of the Big Bossman’s mother.

Gene Okerlund welcomes Dusty Rhodes to the interview platform. Dusty is wearing a hat and a poncho with red polka dots as his look has changed. He talks about feeling humiliated, rejected, and betrayed at SummerSlam when seeing Sapphire with Ted DiBiase. Dusty said he was confused but now knows what has to be done and says he will not be bought, with Heenan joking “who would want him.” Dusty tells DiBiase the price he will pay is going to be “pure hell.” Dusty has now toned down the “Americana” gimmick and has become more serious. This was a good promo.

The Barbarian w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Scott Summers

The Big Bossman is then shown in an insert promo telling Heenan not to make fun of his mother and is giving his last warning. The Barbarian beats the crap out of Summers until he puts him away with a flying clothesline (1:28).

Thoughts: Its clear that Bossman will soon face a member of the Heenan Family as this feud continues.

Texas Tornado vs. The Conquistador

Gorilla lets Heenan know that Bossman issued a final warning as Heenan still makes fun of her and is not scared of Bossman. We hear from Mr. Perfect in an insert promo as he blames the WWF for forcing him to defend the Intercontinental Title on short notice. Tornado stays in control and puts on the claw then hits a discus punch for the win (2:12).

Thoughts: They are building towards Perfect getting a rematch based off of the fact he was not prepared to defend his title against a newcomer.

Glen Ruth & DK Branch & Rico Frederico vs. Demolition

All three members of Demolition are wrestling here. Ruth would go on to become Headbanger Thrasher. We hear from Demolition in an insert promo as they will only be satisfied when the Legion of Doom’s career ends. Demolition are in total control as Heenan makes more jokes about Bossman’s mom then they put Ruth away with the Decapitation (1:49). After the match, Demolition hits the other two guys with the Decapitation

Thoughts: More hype for the Demolition/LoD feud.

In action next week are Tugboat, Mr. Perfect, Legion of Doom, Saba Simba, Ted DiBiase, and Big Bossman. Plus, an interview with Sgt. Slaughter.

The show airs with Slaughter telling us we will find out the person he takes orders from next week.

Final Thoughts: The theme of the show continues to revolve around Heenan taking shots at the Big Bossman’s mother. Besides that, there was not much else to speak of as the SummerSlam fallout has been lacking in excitement.
