WWF Superstars of Wrestling – August 11th, 1990

August 11, 1990

From the Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha, NE

Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon

In action this week are Mr. Perfect, Legion of Doom, Ted DiBiase, and the Big Bossman. Plus, the Ultimate Warrior as guest on the “Brother Love Show” and a SummerSlam Report

Legion of Doom vs. “Pistol” Pez Whatley & Randy Jackson

The LoD attack their opponents from behind. We then hear from Demolition in an insert promo as they call out LoD, who are beating on Jackson. The LoD stay in control until they put Jackson away with the Doomsday Device (1:57).

Thoughts: Another dominating win for the LoD as they are set to feud with Demolition after SummerSlam.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We see a replay from last week where Nikolai Volkoff received a medal from the Boy Scouts of America. After that, Volkoff is shown with Jim Duggan as they are both very happy and love America. Volkoff is incredibly goofy in this role and the pairing as a whole just feels off.

Sgt. Slaughter is now live via satellite. Vince asks him about the Boy Scouts of America giving Volkoff a medal. Slaughter says they are “little pukes” and no matter what size, anyone who supports Volkoff you are all pukes. Slaughter then said he will declare a declaration of war at SummerSlam with a real American, not a pinko commie, when he will be on the “Brother Love Show.”

“Texas Tornado” Kerry Von Erich vs. Iron Mike Sharpe

Jesse says Kerry’s physique is “not bad.” The announcers talk about Sgt. Slaughter being at SummerSlam as Kerry is in control of the match then puts Sharpe away with a discus punch (1:26).

Thoughts: They are pushing Kerry strong out of the gate as he completely dominated Sharpe in this match.

Mr. Perfect w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Randy Fox

Vince talks about their not being an opponent for Perfect at SummerSlam then we hear from both Perfect & Heenan saying no matter who faces him at SummerSlam, they will not be perfect. Perfect demands some competition after hitting a neck snap and stays in control until he puts Fox away with a Perfect Plex (2:03). After the match, Kerry Von Erich heads out to the ring. He then challenges Perfect to a match at SummerSlam for the Intercontinental Title then leaves as Jesse goes off on Kerry for having one match on TV and thinking he deserves a title shot.

Thoughts: The Kerry push continues as he challenges Perfect for a title shot. I liked how Perfect & Heenan sold the shock of Kerry doing this with Jesse on commentary saying Kerry hasn’t proved a thing in the WWF. Given the circumstances regarding the SummerSlam IC Title match, this was a fine angle.

SummerSlam Report with Okerlund. We learn of three new matches including Duggan & Volkoff vs. The Orient Express, Tito Santana vs. Rick Martel, and The Rockers vs. Power & Glory. Martel vs. Tito never did happen.

“Jumping” Jim Brunzell vs. “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase w/ Virgil

The announcer talk about the “WWF Magazine” article regarding DiBiase’s trips to Cobb County, GA. DiBiase bails after Brunzell takes him down with a monkey flip then is sling-shotted back inside. DiBiase comes back with a clothesline to block a hip toss then hammers away in the corner. He hits a powerslam as Vince talks about the challenged issued by Kerry Von Erich as DiBiase gets the win with the Million Dollar Dream (2:06).

Thoughts: They are back to acknowledging the DiBiase/Bossman feud more on TV but the announcers mostly talked about the prior segment.

Brother Love Show with the Ultimate Warrior. The Warrior comes out and babbles on about his destiny as the crowd pans to fans wearing or holding up Warrior masks. He then promises to leave SummerSlam as the WWF Heavyweight Champion. Warrior is struggling as a character right now. These promos are not catching on and this feud heading into SummerSlam has been overshadowed not only by the co-main event but by a couple of others as well.

Koko B. Ware & Ricky Rice vs. The Orient Express w/ Mr. Fuji

Koko & Rice get an entrance here. He starts off with Tanaka then tags out as Rice starts working the arm. Tanaka fires away then tags out as Sato beats him down. We hear from The Orient Express & Fuji in an insert promo talking about their match at SummerSlam. Rice continues to get beat down until Sato puts him away with a sit-out powerbomb (1:49).

Thoughts: A win to put over the Orient Express heading into SummerSlam against Volkoff & Duggan.

Sapphire shows of her newest gift, a 16 carat diamond ring. She’s says its heavy.

Big Bossman vs. Paul Diamond

Bossman beats on Diamond as we hear from Bad News Brown in an insert promo hype his match against Jake Roberts at SummerSlam then warning Bossman not to get involved as the special guest referee. Bossman stays in control then puts Diamond away with a sidewalk slam (0:59). Diamond gets cuffed to the ropes after the match.

Thoughts: The commentary was focused on Bossman being the special guest referee at SummerSlam for the Jake vs. Bad News match.

In action next week are Bad News Brown, Hart Foundation, Tugboat, and Macho King Randy Savage. Plus, a SummerSlam Report and more!

Final Thoughts: We learned of three new matches and saw Kerry Von Erich challenge Mr. Perfect for the IC Title. Plus, we also heard that Sgt. Slaughter will be at SummerSlam as a guest on the “Brother Love Show.” The rest of the show was standard SummerSlam hype.
