WWF Wrestling Challenge – May 27th, 1990

May 27, 1990

From the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, TX

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan

In action this week are Brutus Beefcake, Bad News Brown, Rhythm & Blues, and Haku.

Rhythm & Blues w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Jim Powers & Rudy Gonzalez

Gonzalez is in fact Rudy Boy Gonzalez, trainer of Shawn Michaels and many others in wrestling. We get Rhythm & Blues in an insert promo as they promise to tune up the Bushwhackers. Powers kicks Honky a few times then works the arm. Valentine tags in and slicks back his hair before chopping Powers a few times. Powers is able to fight back then blocks a sunset flip before tagging out. Gonzalez gets kicked then beat down until put away with a double back suplex (2:59).

Thoughts: More hype for the Rhythm & Blues and the Bushwhackers feud, which has been going on for a while now.

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. This week’s focus is on The Bolsheviks and how they fought each other after losing to The Rockers. We then hear from Zhukov, telling Volkoff he is not a true Russian and challenges him to a match as Volkoff accepts and will not stand for Lithuania being insulted.

Hercules vs. Bob Bradley

Hercules is sporting black trunks here. Gorilla teases Heenan by saying Barbarian cannot match power with Hercules, who is in firm control of the match. Bradley attacks Hercules and rakes the eyes but Hercules hits a backdrop then puts Bradley away with the backbreaker submission (2:17).

Thoughts: Easy win for Hercules Barbarian as they were lightly teasing a feud against The Barbarian on commentary.

Hillbilly Jim tells us about WWF Ice Cream Bars and how great they taste.

Omar Atlas vs. Haku w/ Bobby Heenan

Haku works the arm of Atlas, who then starts to fight back, but Haku ducks Atlas coming off of the top and hits a thrust kick for the win (1:37).

Thoughts: Quick win for Haku, who remains without direction.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. Pez Whatley

Duggan knocks Whatley outside as we hear him in an insert promo telling Earthquake when they meet again it will be a war. Whatley kicks Duggan in the face then hammers away. Duggan fights back then hits the Three Point Stance for the win (2:55).

Thoughts: They are pushing Duggan for his eventual match against Earthquake.

Bad News Brown vs. Jim Gorman

Bad News attacks Gorman from behind then chokes him out with his own jacket. We hear from Jake Roberts in an insert promo wanting to know why Bad News never smiles and what makes him happy as Bad News stays in control and finishes Gorman off with the Ghetto Blaster (2:12). After the match, Bad News tosses Gorman through the ropes.

Thoughts: The Bad News/Jake Roberts feud continues.

Gene Okerlund welcomes Dusty Rhodes & Sapphire to the interview platform. He tells Macho King Randy Savage he thought it was over at WrestleMania VI when Savage got his butt kicked but after that they embarrassed himself and his “sweet brown sugar” in Sapphire. He tells us Sapphire never hurt anyone and belongs to “America” as the camera keeps zooming in on Sapphire’s face. Dusty said he had a tear in his eye because their parents worked on their hands and knees their whole lives and will not be kissing the feet of Queen Sherri. Sapphire then tells Sherri she might know about wrestling but will teach her about pain. Dusty showed a ton of fire and the crowd bought everything he said which is something he was able to do throughout his career.

Louie Spicolli vs. Dino Bravo w/ Jimmy Hart

We get an insert promo from Bravo, who says its tough being the world’s strongest man and its tough finding an opponent before saying Red Rooster has been saying stuff about him as he promises to choke Rooster “like a chicken.” Bravo beats on Spicolli and puts him in the airplane spin before the side slam gets the win (2:16).

Thoughts: They were building to a Bravo/Rooster I guess to give fans at the arenas a reason to leave their seats and go to the bathroom.

Rude in the gym with Heenan jumping rope in a promo we’ve seen before.

Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake vs. Kenny Johnson

Beefcake calls out Mr. Perfect in an insert promo before locking up with Johnson, who lands a few shots in the corner. Beefcake fights back then puts Johnson away with the sleeper (2:13). After the match, Beefcake gives Johnson a haircut.

Thoughts: With Perfect the champion they are continuing his feud with Beefcake.

In action next week are Tito Santana, Ted DiBiase, Hart Foundation, and Mr. Perfect

Final Thoughts: Nothing really too exciting here. The Dusty promo was the only thing that stoodout on the show as the TV has been stagnant for the most part during this period in the company.
