WWF Wrestling Challenge – May 20th, 1990

May 20, 1990

From the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, TX

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan

This week, we will see the Intercontinental Title Tournament Finals between Mr. Perfect and Tito Santana. Also in action are The Bushwhackers, Tugboat, Akeem, and the Orient Express.

The Bushwhackers defeating Brooklyn Brawler & Mark Ming from the 5/14 edition of “Prime Time Wrestling” is shown.

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. This week’s focus is on last week’s “Superstars of Wrestling” when Earthquake attacked his opponent when he was on a stretcher until Jim Duggan made the save.

The Barbarian w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Ray Majori

Gorilla is now solo on commentary. Barbarian destroys Majori as we hear Heenan in an insert promo putting over his new look and how the rest of the WWF is terrified. Barbarian stays in control until he finishes off Majori with a flying clothesline (2:44).

Thoughts: They continue to establish the Barbarian as a singles act but there is nothing lined up for him in terms of a feud.

Macho King Randy Savage & Queen Sherri talk about being on the cover of “WWF Magazine” and tells Dusty Rhodes to “bring it.”

Tugboat vs. Bob Bradley

Hulk Hogan is in an insert promo putting over Tugboat and saying he brought him to the WWF. Tugboat tosses Bradley around as we see Hogan peeking through the curtain and smiling. Tugboat stays in control  until putting Bradley away with a splash as Hogan makes his way to the ring (2:23). After the match, Hogan raises Tugboat’s hand then gives him a hug as Tugboat is just elated to see the Hulkster.

Thoughts: They really are going all out in pushing Tugboat as a friend of Hogan.

Akeem w/ Slick vs. Stephen DeLeon

Akeem beats on DeLeon then yells at him to get up. He chokes out DeLeon against the ropes then hits a few elbow drops before getting the win with a splash (2:33).

Thoughts: Akeem is another guy who has nothing going on for him and quite frankly someone whose best days are well behind him.

Gene Okerlund welcomes Big Bossman to the interview platform. Bossman tells DiBiase he cannot be bought and after getting jumped he is out to serve justice as he is coming after him. A brief but fired up promo from Bossman, who continues to succeed as a babyface.

Bobby Perez & “Jumping” Jim Brunzell vs. The Orient Express w/ Mr. Fuji

Brunzell takes Sato down with a headscissors then works the arm as Gorilla tells us he left the WWF to open up a gymnasium. Sato catches Brunzell with a punch to the gut then a super kick as the announcers talk about the “WWF Magazine” article on the Orient Express. Perez tags and gets beat down for a bit until Sato puts him away with a sitout powerbomb (3:18).

Thoughts: No real mention of the Orient Express/Rockers feud here but that is still continuing.

Rick Rude is with Heenan at the gym. He talks about history repeating himself and how he is the only man to beat the Ultimate Warrior for the title and will do it again as Rude climbs a rope to the top then comes down and tells Warrior that getting shoved to the bottom is not easy to take.

Intercontinental Title Tournament Finals match from the 5/19 edition of “Superstars of Wrestling” is shown where Mr. Perfect beats Tito Santana is shown. After the match, Perfect announces Bobby Heenan as his new manager.

In action next week are Mr. Perfect and more!

Final Thoughts: The only exclusive news here was Hogan appearing to give Tugboat a boost. Other than that you got to see the IC Title Tournament of you missed it on “Superstars of Wrestling” and the continuation of the other feuds going on in the company.
