WWF Superstars of Wrestling – April 21st, 1990

April 21, 1990

From the Glens Falls Civic Center in Glens Falls, NY

Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon

This week, the competitors of the Intercontinental Title Tournament will be announced. Also, Demolition defends the Tag Team Titles against The Bolsheviks. Plus, Mr. Perfect, Big Bossman, and the Warlord are in action as well as an update on Dusty Rhodes and Sapphire.

Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs. Sonny Austin

Jake takes Austin over with a hip toss as the announcers talk about how people are afraid of the DDT, Damien, or Jake himself. Austin rakes the eyes and lands a few shots until Jake hits a back suplex. Austin rolls outside where Jake yanks him into the post then we hear from Jake telling us how there is no answer to the DDT, Damien, or himself before he puts Austin away with the DDT (2:39). After the match, Jake puts Damien on top of Austin.

Thoughts: An easy win for Jake as he is putting himself over as being the most feared in the WWF while he searches for another feud.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund, who is shilling the Hulk Hogan vitamins before introducing us to the footage from last week where Macho King Randy Savage & Queen Sherri attacked Dusty Rhodes & Sapphire. Okerlund says that Dusty is not happy and wears his heart on his sleeve while promising that Savage & Sherri will pay for what they have done.

Jimmy Long vs. The Warlord w/ Slick

Warlord beats on Long as Vince puts over his size. We then hear from Slick in an insert promo as he tells us the Warlord is on a “mission of destruction.” Warlord then hits Long with a delayed vertical suplex before putting him away with a running powerslam (1:32).

Thoughts: The crowd is still not reacting to the Warlord yet but the company is slowly pushing him as a singles act.

The Genius is on the interview platform to recite a poem, while wearing a wig. He tells us about closing down Brutus Beefcake’s Barber Shop and to beware of his IQ. They are keeping the Beefcake/Perfect feud in the background while both guys are involved in the Intercontinental Title Tournament.

The Bushwhackers vs. Dale Wolfe & Scott Colontonio

The Bushwhackers call out Rhythm & Blues in an insert promo, stating they are coming after them. They beat on Wolfe to start the match then Colontonio comes in and gets hit with the battering ram before he is put away with a double gutbuster (2:13). After the match, the Bushwhackers lick the heads of some of the younger fans while Vince laughs like an idiot.

Thoughts: More hype for the Bushwhackers/Rhythm & Blues feud while Vince was going all out getting over the Bushwhackers post-match antics.

Mr. Perfect defeats Jim McPherson in a match first shown on the 4/16 episode of Prime Time Wrestling.

A graphic airs on the screen showing the Intercontinental Title tournament bracket. The first round matchups are Tito Santana vs. Akeem, Brutus Beefcake vs. Dino Bravo, Jimmy Snuka vs. Mr. Perfect, and Roddy Piper vs. Rick Martel.

Brother Love Show with guest Hacksaw Jim Duggan. Brother Love makes light of the fact when Earthquake attacked Duggan at WrestleMania VI as we see a clip of that. Duggan is pissed then tells everyone he will not quit or stop and keep attacking until the Earthquake goes down. They are building up Duggan a bit to feed to the new monster in Earthquake.

WWF Tag Team Title Match: The Bolsheviks vs. Demolition (c)

Before the match, The Bolsheviks sing the Russian National Anthem with Volkoff yelling at Zhukov for being “out of tune.” Zhukov cheap shots Smash in the corner then hammers away. Zhukov misses an elbow drop in a terrible spot due to Smash getting up far too soon then Ax tags in and works the neck. Demolition continue to work over Zhukov as they target the arm. Volkoff tags and stomps on Ax for a bit. Zhukov is back in now but eats boot on a charge then Smash tags in and runs wild. Volkoff is knocked off of the apron then the match breaks down with Demolition cleaning house then putting Zhukov away with the Decapitation (4:19) 1/4*. The Bolsheviks argue after the match.

Thoughts: The match was awful and its hard to buy The Bolsheviks as having a chance since they lost in seconds at WrestleMania VI and were not having any success before that time, either. Plus, the story of that WrestleMania match was that the Hart Foundation would receive a title shot as long as they won so why even give The Bolsheviks a shot here? They did plant the seed for the team splitting up though.

Rick Rude is back in the gym with Bobby Heenan. He has Warrior’s face painted on a speed bag then punches away as he talks about defeating the Ultimate Warrior for the WWF World Heavyweight Title. Another strong promo by Rude.

Big Bossman defeats Pez Whatley from the 4/16 edition of Prime Time Wrestling.

Next week, Tito Santana will face Akeem in the IC Title Tournament Quarterfinals. Also in action are Tugboat, Dino Bravo, Hart Foundation, and Earthquake plus Hulk Hogan as the guest on the “Brother Love Show.” We close out the show with comments from Santana and Akeem & Slick.

Final Thoughts: We learned the IC Title Tournament competitors and focused on a few other feuds as well. Rude is continuing to get built up as the Warrior’s first challenger and Earthquake is coming along nicely as the new monster heel while they focused on a few other midcard feuds too.
