WWF Prime Time Wrestling – March 12th, 1990

March 12, 1990

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan

Gorilla lets us know in two weeks we will have the “Ultimate Challenge” special that will feature some exclusive matches.

Hart Foundation vs. Iron Mike Sharpe & “Playboy” Buddy Rose

This is from the 2/13 “Superstars of Wrestling” tapings in Phoenix, AZ. The announcers talk about the Hart Foundation wanting a tag title shot but should not overlook their WrestleMania VI opponents in The Bolsheviks. Neidhart slams Sharpe then hits a pair of arm drags. Bret tags and take Rose over with an arm drag after an Irish whip sequence. Rose comes back with a single leg takedown but Bret rolls out and works a hammerlock. The Hart Foundation stay in control until Rose catches Bret with a jumping back elbow smash. Rose targets the back as Bret is in trouble. Sharpe accidentally clotheslines Rose then Bret tags out as Neidhart runs wild. Bret is back in and they use a double noggin-knocker before putting Sharpe away with the Hart Attack (6:09) *1/2.

Thoughts: The sequence between Hart and Rose was fun but the rest was forgettable. They’re building up the Hart Foundation to a future title shot and the fans are still into them, despite the fact the team has mostly been working as singles wrestlers over the past few months.

Back in the studio, Heenan says the Hart Foundation look as sharp as they did while champions while Gorilla tells us Boris Zhukov will face Big Bossman on the Ultimate Challenge special.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This is from the 3/10 edition of “Superstars of Wrestling” with Mr. Fuji selling the Powers of Pain, with Warlord going to Slick and Barbarian to Bobby Heenan.

Rick Rude defeats Pez Whatley from the 3/11 edition of “Wrestling Challenge.”  Back in the studio, Heenan asks what does it take for Rude to beat a “tree-climbing buffoon” in Snuka at WrestleMania.

An ad voiced over by Vince for WrestleMania VI tickets.

Brooklyn Brawler & Black Bart vs. Hercules & Paul Roma

Hercules & Roma are wearing matching attire here as Roma has ditched the Young Stallion colors for black trunks. Brawler slaps Roma with his hat but Roma comes back with a dropkick. He works a headlock then takes both Brawler & Bart over then the match breaks down as they hit stereo running powerslams. Bart wants to challenge Hercules to a test of strength but Hercules easily wins that battle. The match breaks down again as Hercules & Roma clear the ring as the fans cheer. Roma & Hercules use quick tags as they stay in control. Roma tries a flying headscissors but Bart drops him near the ropes where Brawler attacks from behind. The fans rally behind Roma as he is trapped in the corner. Brawler works a chinlock then Roma hits a sunset flip that Bart breaks up. Roma dives over a double clothesline and tags out as Hercules runs wild. Hercules hits Brawler with a powerslam then they put Brawler away with the Rocket Launcher (7:31) **.

Thoughts: This was a lot more fun than I ever thought it would be. The fans dug Hercules & Roma here, who were both doing nothing at the time. Roma claimed that he was the one who suggested to Vince that they team together as this appeared as a test run for the two.

Gorilla lets us know about the “Ultimate Challenge” special in two weeks. He says Ronnie Garvin will face Earthquake and there will be exclusive interviews between Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior.

Tugboat vs. Randy Jones

This match was taped at the 2/14 “Wrestling Challenge” tapings in Tucson, AZ. Tugboat overpowers Jones to start. He hits a backdrop then a few backbreakers in a row before hitting a splash for the win (2:13).

Thoughts: An easy win for Tugboat who they are slowly starting to build up to something.

The Hogan/Warrior promos from the 3/10 “Superstars of Wrestling” airs.

Rick Martel defeats the Red Rooster from the 2/19 Madison Square Garden show.

The hosts hype the “Ultimate Challenge” as Gorilla says The Rockers will face the Colossal Connection. Heenan accuses Demolition of paying the Rockers to take out the Colossal Connection as he tells us Andre is angry

Roddy Piper interview from the 3/11 edition of “Wrestling Challenge.”

WrestleMania VI Report with Gene Okerlund.

Akeem beat Ricki Ataki from the 3/10 “Superstars of Wrestling” airs.

Sean Mooney is in the Event Center for some WrestleMania VI hype. The Hart Foundation tell The Bolsheviks they do not trust them and will not get tricked on April Fools Day.

Demolition vs. Dale Wolfe & Steve Desire

This match would also air on the 3/18 edition of “Wrestling Challenge.” Demolition beats on Wolfe to start. The announcers talk about Demolition looking to become Tag Team Champions again as we hear them in an insert promo as they promise to tear the Colossal Connection apart. Desire tags in and does not fare any better as Smash tosses him outside a few times before putting him away with the Decapitation (3:01).

Thoughts: An easy win to give Demolition some momentum heading into their Tag Team Title match at WrestleMania VI.

Hulk Hogan defeats Dino Bravo from the 3/10 “Superstars of Wrestling” airs.

Gorilla once again reminds us about the Ultimate Challenge special in two weeks and says Randy Savage vs. Dusty Rhodes and Ted DiBiase vs. Red Rooster will also take place.

Final Thoughts: Not the most exciting edition of “Prime Time Wrestling.” They are building up to the Ultimate Challenge special in two weeks and it was interesting to see Roma & Hercules team before they were heels as Power & Glory but other than that there was nothing to see here if you had been following the weekly TV show.
