WWF Superstars of Wrestling – March 3rd, 1990

March 3, 1990

From the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix, AZ

Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon

Before the announcers run down the show, we see Jesse dressed in all Hulk Hogan gear because he is predicting Hogan will win at WrestleMania VI.

This week, we will get more comments from Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior. Also in action are Randy Savage, Roddy Piper, Mr. Perfect, Demolition, and the debut of the Orient Express. Plus the WrestleMania VI report and more!

“Macho King” Randy Savage w/ Queen Sherri vs. Jim Powers

Powers surprises Savage with an arm drag then hits a clothesline for a two count. Sherri jumps up on the apron for the distraction then Savage takes him outside with a knee smash. Savage rolls Powers back inside as we hear from both Savage & Sherri in an insert promo as they promise to beat Dusty Rhodes & Sapphire at WrestleMania VI before Savage gets the win with a flying elbow drop (1:29).

Thoughts: A quick win for Savage as his feud against Dusty continues to get pushed strong on TV.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We are shown clips from “The Main Event” when Hogan came out to save Warrior from Dino Bravo & Earthquake, leading to Warrior getting pissed as the two got into each other’s faces. After that, we hear from both men as Hogan does his usual Hulkamaniac stuff while Warrior gives us more grunting and screaming to go along with his nonsensical rambling. Good thing the face vs. face dynamic and the fact they have been built up strong for years happened because these promos have been the shits. Warrior’s nonsense is not appealing and the same “Hulkamania”promos for the past five years are wearing thin. After that, we cut back to the announcers as Jesse is less confident in saying that Hogan will win the match.

Pete Ketchum & Mark Young vs. The Orient Express w/ Mr. Fuji

The Orient Express are Sato (Akio Sato of AJPW & NWA fame) and Tanaka (Pat Tanaka who came from the AWA).  Vince wants to know what Fuji is going to do with the Powers of Pain since he is managing a new team. We hear from Fuji in an insert promo as he says this is the top team in Japan and he has some devious plans. Tanaka beats on Young to start. Young comes back with an amrdrag and a slam. Sato runs in and gets taken down with a hurricarana. Vince calls out Jesse for changing his mind on the WrestleMania main event winner while wearing Hogan merchandise as Ketchum tags and is drilled with a super kick and soon after that Tanaka hits a bridging German suplex for the win (1:56).

Thoughts: Not much of a debut. Sato & Tanaka did not show much chemistry and the announcers talked about Hogan vs. Warrior at WrestleMania VI and barely mentioned the debuting team.

Jake Roberts addresses Ted DiBiase and talks about doing what he said in taking the Million Dollar Belt. He taunts DiBiase by letting him know the belt is in the snake bag then we get a bunch of different shots of Jake with various snakes besides Damien as he laughs. They did some different production values with this and it was appreciated but it also seemed better for someone who was a heel with the style used.

Roddy Piper vs. Dale Wolfe

We hear from Piper in an insert promo as he is not impressed with Bad News Brown saying how he is tough. Piper takes off his kilt before entering the ring and Wolfe puts it on but Piper sees this and goes nuts until hitting a back suplex for the win (0:27).

Thoughts: A brief segment to have Piper go nuts as his feud with Bad News continues.

“The Model” Rick Martel tells us to get some “Arrogance” after wiping off several other bottles of cologne from the table. You can see they are really pushing the Arrogance gimmick.

Mr. Perfect w/ The Genius vs. Omar Atlas

Perfect is shown in an insert promo warning Brutus Beefcake what will happen at WrestleMania VI. Atlas lands a few shots but runs into a clothesline and soon after that is put away with the Perfect Plex (1:02).

Thoughts: More WrestleMania VI hype, this time for Beefcake vs. Perfect.

Brother Love Show with guest Hercules. He asks Hercules about facing Earthquake at WrestleMania VI as Hercules is not afraid and accepts the Earthquake’s “declaration of war” as he promises to stand tall after the match. I guess they wanted to make us believe that Hercules stood a chance.

WrestleMania VI Report with Gene Okerlund. We learn of new matches such as Tito Santana vs. The Barbarian, Jimmy Snuka vs. Rick Rude, and Jim Duggan vs. Dino Bravo. Other clips and interviews are shown to hype up previously announced matches.

Demolition vs. Buddy Rose & Larry Stevens

Smash beats on Rose to start. Rose gets knocked outside and does some of his comedy bumps as he is getting beat down in the corner while the announcers make fun of his physique. Stevens is in now and gets destroyed as we hear from Bobby Heenan & The Colossal Connection as they taunt Demolition with the Tag Team Titles. Ax then yells for the Colossal Connection before putting Stevens away with the Decapitation (2:52).

Thoughts: The focus was on the WrestleMania VI Tag Team Title match. It was sad seeing Rose here as he tried but his body was just not cooperating and the announcers were shitting on his physique like he was Rusty Brooks or someone of that caliber.

Next week’s, the featured match is Hulk Hogan vs. Dino Bravo as we hear from all involved, including Earthquake as he tells Hogan that no one survives an earthquake. Seems like fighting words to me.

Final Thoughts: More WrestleMania hype here, even if it still feels like a one-match show. We also saw the Orient Express debut and they set up an interesting featured match for next week too.
