WWF Wrestling Challenge – January 7th, 1990

January 7, 1990

From the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, TN

Your hosts are Tony Schiavone and Gorilla Monsoon

In action this week are the Hart Foundation, Dino Bravo, and Jim Duggan. Plus, a “Royal Rumble Report,” an interview with Macho King Randy Savage, and highlights from last week’s Andre the Giant vs. Colossal Connection Tag Team match

Hart Foundation vs. Brooklyn Brawler & Conquistador #1

Neidhart shoves Brawler into the corner as the Hart Foundation are shown in a promo talking about the Royal Rumble match and that they’d even turn on each other to win the match. The Hart Foundation work over The Conquistador as the announcers talk about the Royal Rumble match and plug the newest edition of “WWF Magazine” before they hit The Conquistador with the Hart Attack for the win (2:24).

Thoughts: Quick win for the Hart Foundation, who seem to be back on TV again as a team instead of in singles acts.

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. He runs down the Royal Rumble card and we hear from some of the competitors.

We are shown clips of the Ultimate Warrior getting ambushed last week on “Superstars of Wrestling” by Dino Bravo after the Canadian Earthquake provided a distraction.

Dino Bravo w/ Jimmy Hart & The Canadian Earthquake vs. Dale Wolfe

Wolfe bounces off of Bravo then gets caught and dropped across the top rope as we hear from the Ultimate Warrior in an insert promo as he promises to get revenge on Bravo. Back to the match as Bravo drags Wolfe back up onto the apron and then into the ring where he hits the side slam for the win (2:00). After the match, Earthquake hits Bravo with a sitdown splash.

Thoughts: The Bravo/Warrior feud continues.

Sean Mooney is in the Event Center to hype the 1/13/90 Boston Garden show. Bravo, Earthquake, and Jimmy Hart run down the Ultimate Warrior while Jimmy Snuka promises to beat the Honky Tonk Man.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. Craig Green

The announcers talk about Duggan’s match against the Big Bossman at the Royal Rumble then we hear from Bossman in an insert promo as he runs down Duggan. Green gets knocked over a few times but is able to duck out and avoid the Three Point Stance then heads up the aisle so Duggan brings him back and sends him into the post before heading inside where he hits the Three Point Stance for the win (2:13).

Thoughts: They hyped up the Bossman vs. Duggan match at the Royal Rumble, which tells you their current singles feuds are wrapping up as they move on to other things.

An ad for the Royal Rumble airs.

Clips from the 12/30/89 edition of “Superstars of Wrestling” where the Colossal Connection defeated Demolition for the Tag Team Titles.

Mooney is back in the Event Center for the Boston Garden show. Duggan tells Macho King Randy Savage he will beat him in their match, with features two referees. The Colossal Connection and Bobby Heenan are laughing as they tell Demolition they cannot be stopped.

Hercules vs. John Justice

The announcers talk about the cable companies preventing fans from being able to see the Royal Rumble as Hercules is then shown in an insert promo talking about being able to beat 29 wrestlers in the Royal Rumble. He overpowers Justice to start until Justice rakes the eyes to escape from a bearhug. Hercules fights back and puts Justice away with the backbreaker submission (2:38).

Thoughts: Once again, the company uses a Hercules squash match as a backdrop to bitch about the cable companies. It didnt matter as he was floundering in his current role.

Gene Okerlund welcomes Macho King Randy Savage and Queen Sherri to the interview platform. He asks them about an article in “WWF Magazine” as Savage says no one can beat him. Savage is then asked about the Royal Rumble and said no one is more suited for that match than himself and lists of the top competitors as he says they will all fall to him in the match. Okerlund now brings up Sherri being on the Brother Love Show along with Sapphire. Sherri says if Sapphire gets in her business, she will send her back where she came from as Savage finishes by saying the Rumble match will end with all of the commoners bowing at his feet. So, looks like we are getting a Savage vs. Dusty feud next. Savage did a good job here and really did stick with the king gimmick and actually made it work.

Royal Rumble Report with Gene Okerlund airs.

The Rockers vs. Pat Rose & Arvil Hutto

Rose & Hutto try to sneak attack Shawn but that fails as the Rockers clear the ring. The announcers talk about the “WWF Magazine” article on the Rockers feud with the Powers of Pain. The Rockers stay in control and work over Hutto before putting him away with a double flying fist drop (3:46).

Thoughts: The Rockers looked great as their feud against the Powers of Pain continues with the story being whether or not the Rockers speed would be enough to overcome the PoP’s strength.

Mooney is back in the Event Center with more hype for the Boston Garden show. Bad News tells Bret Hart he will get revenge on him for destroying his trophy at the WrestleMania IV battle royal while Demolition warn Bobby Heenan and Colossal Connection they will regain the Tag Team Titles.

Next week in action are Big Bossman, Mr. Perfect, Brutus Beefcake, Rick Rude, and Jake Roberts.

Final Thoughts: Nothing but Royal Rumble hype. They touched upon a few midcard feuds but the focus is on the PPV, which is just two weeks away.
