WWF Superstars of Wrestling – January 6th, 1990

January 6, 1990

From the Von Braun Civic Center in Huntsville, AL

Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon

In action this week are Brutus Beefcake, Big Bossman, The Bushwhackers, and more!

Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake vs. George South

Beefcake backs South in the corner then slams him down. Rick Martel is shown in an insert promo calling out Beefcake for his ridiculous clothes and says he is going to take a closer look as South lands some punches in the corner. Beefcake fights back then catches South in a sleeper for the win (2:04). After the match, Beefcake cuts South’s hair but we see Martel modeling clothes on the interview platform as he has a mic and tells Beefcake he can learn from a model, a man with class such as himself. Beefcake then heads over to him as Martel says he are sick of Beefcake, who chases him away with his shears. A few officials hold Martel back as Beefcake grabs Martel’s coat. Beefcake stomps Martel’s hat then cuts up his coat as Martel is livid while Jesse screams about how Beefcake should be arrested. Beefcake then takes the coat he cut up and puts it on along with the hat and struts around while Vince is in all his glory.

Thoughts: Fun angle here at the end with Beefcake cutting up Martel’s jacket. Sure, its goofy, but it got over and The Model is incredibly pretentious anyway.

Koko B. Ware vs. Alan Martin

Koko is in an insert promo putting over how tough the Royal Rumble match will be and that he is in the greatest shape of his life. Koko takes Martin over with a monkey flip then uses his speed to his advantage. Koko hits a clothesline then soon after that finishes him off with the Ghostbuster (2:25).

Thoughts: Koko is back but will shortly be even further down on the card than he was before getting fired in October.

Royal Rumble ad airs.

Mark Reagan vs. Mr. Perfect w/ The Genius

Perfect is in an insert promo saying he is the only one in the match with a perfect record and vows to throw out Hulk Hogan last. Reagan catches Perfect with a dropkick but runs into a forearm smash. Perfect then punches Reagan before putting him away with the Perfect Plex (1:04).

Thoughts: Really quick match to put over Mr. Perfect as he is still being pushed in house show matches against Hogan.

Big Bossman w/ Slick vs. Tony Montana

Bossman tosses Montana down as an article from “WWF Magazine” on Sapphire is shown in an insert. Bossman roughs up Montana briefly then puts him away with a sidewalk slam (0:44). After the match, Bossman puts the ball-and-chain on Montana then knocks him down and drops the ball on his stomach.

Thoughts: The Bossman is now using the ball-and-chain instead of the nightstick to put that stipulation over as it will be used in his matches against Dusty Rhodes.

The Bushwhackers vs. Tom Ziegler & Iron Mike Sharpe

Sharpe attacks Luke from behind as Jesse says the average intelligence level of Huntsville is about ten points lower than the Bushwhackers. The Bushwhackers fight back and clean house as The Bolsheviks appear and circle the ring holding up the Soviet Flag before leaving. Jesse wants to know why the crowd is chanting “USA” since the Bushwhackers are from New Zealand then the Bushwhackers hit Ziegler with the battering ram and get the win with a double gutbuster (1:49).

Thoughts: The Bolsheviks circled around the ring with their flags in a lame attempt to get heat. Really, its all they had though as they sucked in the ring and in every other aspect at wrestling.

Another Royal Rumble ad airs.

Brother Love Show with guests Bobby Heenan, Jimmy Hart, Queen Sherri, Slick, and Mr. Fuji. Brother Love says that they are representing men in the Royal Rumble match and they all argue, stating their men will win the Rumble match. This was really lame to be honest.

Vince plugs the newest edition of “WWF Magazine,” which features an article on the Royal Rumble as that segues into the Rumble Report with Gene Okerlund.

Paul Roma & Jim Gorman vs. Greg “The Hammer” Valentine & Honky Tonk Man w/ Jimmy Hart

Ronnie Garvin is shown in an insert promo telling Honky to find a new partner because Valentine will not be around after their match at the Royal Rumble. Roma gets the best of Valentine then works the arm of Honky. Gorman tags and also works the arm but Honky backs him in the corner then tags out. Valentine roughs up Gorman and hits a suplex before putting him away with the figure four (2:11).

Thoughts: It appears they are giving us a glimpse of Valentine & Honky’s future after the Rumble here.

Next week in action are Ted DiBiase, Jim Duggan, Rick Martel, The Rockers, and the Canadian Earthquake. Plus, the “Brother Love Show” with guest Ultimate Warrior and more!

Final Thoughts: The Beefcake/Martel angle was fun but the rest was standard PPV hype, which will continue for the next two weeks.
