WWF Superstars of Wrestling – March 11th, 1989

March 11, 1989

From the Broome County Arena in Binghamton, NY

Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon

In action this week will be Jake Roberts, Bushwhackers, and the Blue Blazer. Plus, comments from Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage

Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs. John Zeigler

Jake is in control as we hear from Andre the Giant as he tells Jake he will put him down once and for all, despite the fact that Big John Studd is the referee. Jake works the arm for a bit then shortly after that puts him away with the DDT (2:03).

Thoughts: More hype for the Jake/Andre match but the focus has been about Big John Studd as the guest referee and how he will deal with Andre.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We are shown behind-the-scenes footage from Sensational Sherri’s fashion shoot. Risque stuff for 1989. Sherri did look great here as this seemed to tell us she would be used a lot more going forward.

Greg “The Hammer” Valentine & Honky Tonk Man w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Tim Horner & Dave Stoudemire

We hear from the Hart Foundation in an insert promo as they promise to beat the crap out of Valentine & Honky at WrestleMania. Vince still wants to know if Valentine & Honky can work together as a team as Horner works over Honky. Valentine tags but Horner catches him coming off the middle rope with a punch. Stoudemire tags as Valentine takes him down with a back elbow smash. Stoudemire continues to get worked over until Valentine puts him away with the Figure Four (2:46).

Thoughts: Basic hype for another WrestleMania V match. Its fine but not particularly exciting or anything.

Sean Mooney is in the Event Center to hype up the March 11th Nashville house show. The Red Rooster calls out the Brooklyn Brawler for their match then ends his promo cackling like an idiot then the Brainbusters and Bobby Heenan tell us his team has orders to finish off the Rockers once and for all.

An ad for WrestleMania V airs.

Blue Blazer vs. Gino Carabello

Blazer uses his speed to take control of the match. We hear from Mr. Perfect in an insert promo as he tells Blazer no matter how high he can flip and fly, the whole world will know that he is perfect. Back to the match as Blazer hits a slam then puts Carabello away with a top rope splash (2:01).

Thoughts: The announcers put over Blazer’s high-flying abilities but he is still not getting a push, unlike his opponent at WrestleMania.

We now hear from Randy Savage. He tells us about the last time the Mega Powers were together as Hogan was too busy grandstanding and hotdogging but could accept that. However, he could not accept Hogan telling Elizabeth to move up to the apron right before Akeem threw him outside on top of her and says that Hogan was the one who hit Elizabeth and will never forget. He then recalls Hogan coming over and hovered over Elizabeth and just before he was about to clean his clock, Akeem pulled him back into the ring. Savage then looked over after taking care of business to see Hogan take Elizabeth to the back as the Twin Towers beat him down. He then says only when Elizabeth told him to go back to the ring did he leave and then waited for things to get under control before reaching out to tag. Savage said it felt good to slap Hogan in front of the prime time audience but not as good as it did when he branded him with his belt in the locker room. Savage then says at WrestleMania, with Elizabeth in his corner, he will end all of his and the Hulkamaniacs dreams by turning it into a nightmare. Once again, these promos have all been superb.

Brainbusters vs. Terry Daniels & Bert Centeno

The same Terry Daniels from Sgt. Slaughter’s Cobra Corps back in 1984. He had not been doing anything of note since that time, either. The Brainbusters are in an insert promo telling the Strike Force they will not rain on their parade. Arn clotheslines Daniels from behind as the Brainbusters take control. Centeno tags but Arn beats him down as he enters the ring. Tully tags and slaps Daniels after hitting a dropkick as that allows the referee to get distracted so the Brainbusters can put Centeno away with a spike piledriver (3:11).

Thoughts: There hasn’t been much build to the Brainbusters tag match as the only intriguing thing in that match was from a Martel insert promo where he talked about rather competing in a singles match than with his Strike Force partner.

Brother Love Show with guest Hacksaw Jim Duggan. Brother Love tells Duggan that at WrestleMania he will be meeting a man who is bad in Bad News Brown. Duggan says he loves his family, friends, and country and yells out “hooooooo” as the fans eat up his act. Duggan then says he will not back down and at WrestleMania, it will be all good news for himself. Weak segment, really. Just a platform for Duggan to do his shtick. Plus, they’ve done little to get you excited for this match.

WrestleMania V Report with Gene Okerlund. We hear from Hulk Hogan now as he tells Savage that Elizabeth was invested in the match and that is why she stepped up closer to the apron, not because he told her to as we see a clip of that. Hogan said he knew Savage did not do it on purpose but he was worried about both of them and gave his attention to Elizabeth as he saw Savage was okay. Hogan then said he saw Savage running wild and saw that he was safe so he picked up Elizabeth and took her to the back as he was yelling for help. And once Elizabeth said she was okay and told him to go back, he ran down to the ring as he could not wait to get down as he felt the Mega Powers would live forever. However, when Savage slapped him across the face, the Twin Towers dragged him into the ring and took over. Hogan said the one thing Savage did not count on was the true power of Hulkamania as he was not alone and Hulkamania will carry him right into WrestleMania, where Savage will realize that the “Hulkster” rules as the largest arms in the world and Hulkamania will destroy him. Okerlund then reads another telegram from Roddy Piper, who talks about his guests Morton Downey Jr. and Brother Love as he promises to get rowdy. We then hear from both of those guys. The Hogan promo was pretty damn good.

“Dangerous” Danny Davis & Tim Sawyer vs. Bushwhackers

We hear from the Fabulous Rougeau Brothers and Jimmy Hart as they talk about facing the Bushwhackers at WrestleMania V. The Bushwhackers are now beating on Sawyer until they hit him with the battering ram and put him away with a double gutbuster (2:24).

Thoughts: A match to put over the Bushwhackers antics and hype their WrestleMania match.

Mooney is in the Event Center. We hear from Curt Hennig as he talks about facing Rick Martel in Nashville then the Ultimate Warrior tells the Big Bossman he made a big mistake as he lives on a dead end street filled with nothing but darkness and pain.

We hear from the Red Rooster and the Brooklyn Brawler as they hype up their match at “Saturday Night’s Main Event.” Plus, at SNME we will find out what corner Elizabeth will be in at WrestleMania V.

Final Thoughts: Besides the Hogan/Savage match, everything else on the card at WrestleMania V is getting the same basic hype (guy calls out opponent in an insert promo) and the rest of the card feels underwhelming. Not much to say other than that and there is still two more weeks of TV before the PPV.
